Mod of the Year Top 10
SWAT: Elite Force is a massive overhaul of SWAT 4: The Stetchkov Syndicate, making it into a more realistic tactical police simulator. Featuring new and more realistic equipment, merged campaigns, extra missions, permadeath, better AI, and bug fixes.
Welcome to the 19th century: The American colonies have revolted, gained their independence and they are now nations, the Natives have resisted colonization and struggle to keep their identities, the ancient Asian civilizations are now an active part of the world scenario and have to play their cards right to protect themselves, and in the Balkans, people fight for their independence from once powerful empires. There was one spot on Earth, however, that was ignored for a long time... We're at the modern era and all empires have focused their attention on this long forgotten, but now desirable, region.
Dawn of the Tiberium Age (DTA) is a stand-alone mod that combines Tiberian Dawn (C&C 95) and Red Alert. While classic mode gets as close to the original game-play and balance as possible, Enhanced mode provides improved game balance and a lot of fun new stuff. DTA features many customization options for Skirmish and multiplayer (where you can play as GDI, Nod, Allies and Soviet on over 100 maps), challenging original singleplayer missions, as well as co-op missions. Since this is a stand-alone mod, you don't require anything but the mod itself to be able to play: the original game is not required.
Explore the island of Vvardenfell as you never have before, with a world built anew to be both alien and familiar to the Morrowind you knew before. New adventures await, with new exciting areas to see and explore, and new artifacts just waiting to be discovered. This is a complete overhaul for Morrowind, adding countless new details, weapons, armors and much more for you to see and do.
Age of the Ring is a mod for Rise of the Witch-king. It's set during the final years of the Third Age of Middle-earth, and features content from both The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings film trilogies and J.R.R. Tolkien's novels. Our primary goal is to represent the cultures, warriors, and heroes of that era in a way that is accurate to the source material, engaging in terms of gameplay, and balanced around RotWK's 2.02 community patch.
The Empire at War Remake is a complete overhaul mod that aims to remake Empire at War.
It aims to keep everything you loved about Empire at War: the hardpoint system, capital class warships, unique faction units and playstyles, while providing everything you expect from a 2017 game: Game balance, design vision and great graphics.
Third Age: Reforged is a submod for Third Age 3.2 that aims to overhaul the multiplayer aspect of the mod by thoroughly rebalancing the units and factions while also implementing new units, custom scenarios and other features.
Twisted Insurrection is a standalone game based on a heavily modified Tiberian Sun engine. The game features a completely new in-depth storyline which puts you in an alternate timeline where the Brotherhood of Nod were victorious during the first Tiberian War rather than GDI. Do you have what it takes to drag the shattered Global Defense Initiative out of ruin? Or will you crush all who oppose the will of Kane and his Inner Circle? The choice is yours commander.
2ND PLACE
Star Wars: Thrawn's Revenge II: Ascendancy
Star Wars: Empire at War - Forces of Corruption mod
From the makers of Thrawn's Revenge: Imperial Civil War, Ascendancy is a Star Wars mod set after the Battle of Endor in the Star Wars Galaxy. Fight for galactic ascendancy as multiple factions from this period in Star Wars history. In the wake of the Empire's collapse, the fledgling New Republic is working to build an entirely new order out of the wreckage. Meanwhile, on the edges of the galaxy, the Empire of the Hand, set up by Thrawn during his exile in the unknown regions with the covert support of the Chiss Ascendancy and Emperor Palpatine, strives to unite the galaxy in preparation to face outside threats...
Brutal Doom has polled strongly in previous awards, but has never won. Tirelessly releasing major updates year after year that takes Doom into a whole new level, we couldn't be happier to crown Brutal Doom the 2017 champion. It makes the game much more violent than before. There's much more blood, plus it adds unique gibs, death animations, dismemberments, headshots, executions, fire and explosion particles, flares, shadows over all objects, and much more. Everything in Brutal Doom is extremely intense. Everything sounds louder, looks bigger, moves faster, and hits harder.
Congratulations to all the modders and community members who participated in the 2017 Mod of the Year awards! We wish you all the best for your continued modding efforts into the new year and beyond.
Brutal Doom *yawn*
brutal doom (and its addons!!<== very important) is constantly evolving while still having a solid and fun gameplay even for todays games.
maybe not first place but it totally deserve to be in the top.

No, It's ****. Recount this list. There's a bot.
No mod with stolen assets should be allowed to get a MOTY.
Can't the people who got their assets stolen report the mod?
"Can't the people who got their assets stolen report the mod?"
No, because they don't exist. lol
"No, because they don't exist. lol"
Isn't there evidence against that?
Do you have evidences that asset got stolen?
(buried)
If i want to see flying guts everywhere then i would play Killing Floor games or the new Doom.
Ya'll need to stop being delicate flowers and ******* deal with it.
just lol for the burie coment... you know brutal doom is not only more gore but also a new monster and weapon behavior and attacks. the new version will have an automatic graphical revamp for old doom maps, a new barrel explosion system and vehicles. brutal doom got also one of the best doom mods out there which is the project brutality. also ither addons made by different ppl contribute to the epicness.
i really can't stand those haters just because this mod is overpopular and a bit overrated. people like brutal doom and it was for many what maked them come back on doom. then of course brutal doom is quite old now and maybe is it inapropriate to have it being 1rst as there is several other good quality mods for doom out there that had been release or got an update for 2017 that changed many things.
you know , most people vote for their favourite mod, not for the most original mod of the year.
with saying all this, i hope there was no cheating in this contest.
NB: if your assets where effectivly 'stolen' then why not report it with some proof? ******** on a mod that use assets tons of other mods already use just because that mod is popular is ******* boring.
I don't hate Brutal Doom but I think it already took it's chance, there are lots of other mods that are also worth noting.
unless there was cheating, this list is perfectly legit since it is people votes.
True, I'm not complaining, It's other people's choice and that's fine.
oh it looks like it smells like someone has envy
Gg everyone !
Congratulations to all mods! I thought Zombie Panic! Source would get closer to the top or Honourable Mentions, but it was a tough year and lots good Mods to win these places. Hell, Source engine is old anyway heh. May I ask which place we got?
Happy Holidays!
REFORGED WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOH
We da best (at least med2) mod
you wish
Honestly, there are better ones out there. Europa Barbarorum II and Warhammer End Times and MOS to name a few.
Still, glad to see M2TW getting some love in the top 10!
If other mods are really that good, why are there less vote? This award is not for great mods. Its for mods with lots of fans voting. Presumeably, with lots of vote mean better mods. Stop whining and vote when you had the chance.
I wasn't whining at all. My opinion is simply while a great mod, there are more deserving M2TW mods out there, especially as reforged is primarily built upon an existing mod.
Try and chill out. I appreciate that these mods are ultimately popular votes, and was just expressing my opinion.
So happy to see both Dawn of the Tiberium Age and Twisted Insurrection in Top 10. We've put so much effort in both projects over the entire last decade.
Thank you for the votes! And congratulations to the other winners as well!
I'm very grateful that you guys brought it back to life on modern machines with so much extra content and making it easily mod-able. You guys deserve it!
gg all
A pity we didn't get in this year, but hey there's many more MOTYs in front of us ;)
Thanks to everyone who voted for Warsword Conquest and congratulations to the winners!!
Glad to see some Euro truck "mod" didn't steal the first place this year. I only see legitimately good mods on the list this time.
Congrats!
RTS still reigns supreme, mothatruckaaaas!
Congratulations to all C&C and BFME projects!
Glory to Shai-Hulud! Kane Lives! Tiberium is the answer! Emperor protects! May the Force be with you! Wololo!
The amount of LoTR mods is.... quite amazing.

The fact that Brutal Doom is #1 proves that nobody who was involved in this list knows ****. Not only is the mod old as ****, it's a janky piece of crap that's not regarded highly even in the community for the game it belongs to.
It's a fan vote, so clearly some people in the community disagree with you.
(buried)
If you think moddb's community is Doom's community I've got bad news for ya bub.
I'm suggesting your statement that "nobody involved with this list knows ****" doesn't really make much sense for a popular vote. This sin't someone making their own top 10 list. I'm not saying anything about the quality of the mod, or what other parts of the Doom community (which I am neither part of nor pay attention to) think.
I was really hoping your mod would win one of the top spots, you guys do a wonderful job.
You know, I have probably put more hours on Brutal Doom and it's campaign than the entire Doom modding community have put on their own mods on the last year. If you and the 50 or so nerds at the zdoom forums don't like it, it's actually your problem. You have no grounds to say who should and who shouldn't win this award.
While I know this year was a pretty bad year for doom mods, this statement just flat out makes you look like an *******. It doesnt help your argument when you make yourself look as bad as the people accusing you of stealing assets or making alts.
A pretty bad year? This has been one of the best years. Did you not play The Given? Disjunction?
@Cot.haxray, maybe you have problems to keep up with a discussion, but I didn't insult the other Doom mods out of the blue for no reason, I was answering to someone who called Brutal Doom a "janky piece of crap that's not regarded highly even in the communit". Don't try to distort the reality of the facts.
(buried)
You talk out your *** buddy.
No, seriously, tell me more about the great mods of the Doom community that completely destroys Brutal Doom, like the fidget-spinner mod, the three or four ones that attempts to recreate Doom 2016 gameplay without any changes, or the anime-themed ones.
Wasn't talking about you.
Grats on #1 Sarge, all that hard work has finally paid off!
(buried)
Yes, all the stealing and noncredit!
(buried)
Doom RPG + RLArsenal
Final Doomer
Lithium
Project Horror
Project MSX
Samsara
Do I need to go on?
(buried)
Literally any of them.
(buried)
Sgt Mark is literally no different than Doomguy2000
Another ****** from Doomworld comes in to **** on Brutal Doom because Doomworld groupthink doesn't allow its members to like BD. Could you be any more predictable dude?
how about "Blade of Agony" or "Aliens: The Ultimate Doom"? those guys worked really hard to create a original and unique single player experience unlike your gore festival mod that is almost as pornographic as the anime-themed ones and has a ton of stolen/uncredited assets. i understand it's comfortable for you to think that people are mad at your winning because they are "jelly" or "butthurt". but in truth they are just pointing out the fact that you're an ******* with a lot to answer for and that likes to put up attitude
(buried)
"Blade of Agony" and "Aliens: The Ultimate Doom" aren't hardcore enough for the true hardcore Doom fans who play Brutal Doom. Brutal Doom adds deep well thought out game mechanics to the game without breaking the original games level design. Fatalities are awesome and not boring at all, ADS makes the gunplay feel realistic and true to real life, meaty gun sounds make the game so much more believable and the GORE. The gore is ******* amazing, excessive blood everywhere. Also you need a fairly high spec PC to play this one without framedrops. Also **** everyone who doesn't like Brutal Doom and people who criticize it because Sergeant Mark IV puts so much love and care into this mod. I'm surprised this mod hasn't won the MOTY every year since first release.
(buried)
Also the infrequent updates are well balanced and bug free.
How do you go from this
and this
to this?
Colour me confused.
Sarcasm! lol "Also the infrequent updates are well balanced and bug free." definitely sarcasm
(buried)
Yeah im surprised you havent caught onto this. Also the first comment was meqnt to be taken in a bad way. What i was trying to say with that it was boring and shouldnt be on the list hence yawn next to thr name. Brutal Doom fans are dumb ***** anyway do im not surprised they upvoted my hate comment
Oh the irony. 90% of Blade of Agony's assets are stolen from Call of Duty and Medal of Honor games, and I am a contributor of Aliens: The Ultimate Doom, several stuff there is made by meand Kontra Commando even credits me on the title screen.
what assets from call of duty and medal of honor? is blade of agony not a doom mod made of sprites? are cod&moh; not 3d games?
