Natural Selection is an action-strategy game for the PC. It is a "Half-life modification", which means it is written on top of the Half-life game engine. "Mods" are a new sort of underground game development that enables small teams to create games using the technology of existing games. This means less expensive and lower risk game development, which allows experimentation and innovation. This arrangement also implies that "mods" are made as art, not for making money. When complete, Natural Selection will be released for free to all owners of Half-life, which is required to play Natural Selection. Game summary Multiplayer-only Half-life mod where one team plays marines and the other plays aliens. The humans must keep their cool and work together to assault an alien-infested spacecraft or colony. Marines vs. marines and aliens vs. aliens scenarios are also supported. "First-person strategy" with a real resource model and consequences for actions....

80,000 votes. 4,000 mods. Over the course of 2 months, gamers from across the globe came together to decide which mods rank as the epitome of what our hard working community can do. Now, gallons of blood and sweat later, we tell you what triumphed in 2006

Every time you read one of these "Best of the Year Awards" features, you always hear the same stpry. Oh, yes, see, this year was way more exciting than the last year, because, you know, everything was so different. Yeah freakin' right. There is almost no difference between 2004, 2001, 1998, anything. It's all bloody the same, right?

Well, I'd be lying to you if I said that the Mod of the Year Awards this year wasn't exciting. When the time came for the Top 100 Mods to be announced, we literally had to sit and watch the list eb and flow, backwards and forwards, top mods slipping off the list, only to come back mere minutes later. The list was changing so dramatically that we couldn't even get a jump start on the writing until it came down to the wire!

From there, we've seen the Top 5 mods slowly shift between established classics, new faces in the community and hard-working projects just beginning to pick up steam. We've seen Half-Life, the game engine that saw the modding community explode, finally be dethroned in the listing, no longer dominating all of the categories and finally having to step aside to allow room for others. And, as I've already mentioned, we've registered 80,000 votes in all and seen our site traffic go through the roof as the impact and popularity of mods continues to rocket ever upwards.

I'd be the first person to roll my eyes at phrases like "the best turnout ever," but let's be realistic here. Mod of the Year 2006 has been awesome. And this is coming from the people who worked their butts off on it.

Prepare to play something different.

Will there be a scoreboard released? as in total mods and their votes? it'd be interesting to see the numbers. Also i just want to know where my mods fell in, both were in the top 100, but seems they haven't made the final cut (till editors awards tomorrow)

On behalf of all the Team Members at FirstStrike, all the guys who voted for us a huge THANKS!

Its really unexpected to get this accolade, we didnt think we would have a chance with the sheer quality of work being pumped out from all these MODD'S. Having spent nearly a year and a half on this MOD with bare miminal tools we are now starting to make real progress.
Have to mention the team im afraid most of them arent represented here (my bad), BLITZ (the REAL MOD LEADER) who has been fundamental in multitasking many elements of FS has dedicated a huge amount of time, blood, sweat and tears to this has been an inspiration to us all.

It's nice to organize such a contest !

So good job every single dude coming here & making mods, winners and loosers: in mod making, there's nothing to loose, just big experience to get !

On a side suggestion for Mod DB, I think that it would be great to have a big table resuming how the votes were put in each mod, so that everyone can have an idea of the mod scene.

Regards.
