Natural Selection is an action-strategy game for the PC. It is a "Half-life modification", which means it is written on top of the Half-life game engine. "Mods" are a new sort of underground game development that enables small teams to create games using the technology of existing games. This means less expensive and lower risk game development, which allows experimentation and innovation. This arrangement also implies that "mods" are made as art, not for making money. When complete, Natural Selection will be released for free to all owners of Half-life, which is required to play Natural Selection. Game summary Multiplayer-only Half-life mod where one team plays marines and the other plays aliens. The humans must keep their cool and work together to assault an alien-infested spacecraft or colony. Marines vs. marines and aliens vs. aliens scenarios are also supported. "First-person strategy" with a real resource model and consequences for actions....
80,000 votes. 4,000 mods. Over the course of 2 months, gamers from across the globe came together to decide which mods rank as the epitome of what our hard working community can do. Now, gallons of blood and sweat later, we tell you what triumphed in 2006

Every time you read one of these "Best of the Year Awards" features, you always hear the same stpry. Oh, yes, see, this year was way more exciting than the last year, because, you know, everything was so different. Yeah freakin' right. There is almost no difference between 2004, 2001, 1998, anything. It's all bloody the same, right?
Well, I'd be lying to you if I said that the Mod of the Year Awards this year wasn't exciting. When the time came for the Top 100 Mods to be announced, we literally had to sit and watch the list eb and flow, backwards and forwards, top mods slipping off the list, only to come back mere minutes later. The list was changing so dramatically that we couldn't even get a jump start on the writing until it came down to the wire!
From there, we've seen the Top 5 mods slowly shift between established classics, new faces in the community and hard-working projects just beginning to pick up steam. We've seen Half-Life, the game engine that saw the modding community explode, finally be dethroned in the listing, no longer dominating all of the categories and finally having to step aside to allow room for others. And, as I've already mentioned, we've registered 80,000 votes in all and seen our site traffic go through the roof as the impact and popularity of mods continues to rocket ever upwards.
I'd be the first person to roll my eyes at phrases like "the best turnout ever," but let's be realistic here. Mod of the Year 2006 has been awesome. And this is coming from the people who worked their butts off on it.
Prepare to play something different.

Black Mesa rule!!:D
Yay!

:D awesome! I don't know how those BF2 mods won though...
I'm confused. Isn't there also a 'best standalone game' category?
INtense - really?
Oh, and congratulations to Black Mesa!
Will there be a scoreboard released? as in total mods and their votes? it'd be interesting to see the numbers. Also i just want to know where my mods fell in, both were in the top 100, but seems they haven't made the final cut (till editors awards tomorrow)
Yeah a 'best standalone' catagory would be good...not too late to implement...*pleads*
Yes, and my sexy... Uh nvm.
Congratulations to the winners and honorable mentions! Thanks to the MODDB staff and writers who worked tirelessly on this!
Standalone was listed on the list of awards, they had better list a best stand alone game.

Grats to all winners, excellent feature in all respects. Great job Scott & crew!
:D
Congratulations to the winners!
I second the suggestion for a full scoreboard release. I'd very much like to see where did our mod end up in the top 100! And people who voted for our mod are interested in that too.
I expected way way more. I'm really disapointed.
What more did you expect?
Thank you very much to the players out there, new old and loyal, that keep rooting for this mod! Dont stop, coz we wont until you have one hell of a game, but without you we would not get as excited about continuing to make this beloved game. Its an honor to place 3rd and we appreciate that award no end!
Thanks to all the other mods that provide hours of fun and unique enjoyment too! Also again to moddb, and you the voters, Thanks! =D
On behalf of all the Team Members at FirstStrike, all the guys who voted for us a huge THANKS!
Its really unexpected to get this accolade, we didnt think we would have a chance with the sheer quality of work being pumped out from all these MODD'S. Having spent nearly a year and a half on this MOD with bare miminal tools we are now starting to make real progress.
Have to mention the team im afraid most of them arent represented here (my bad), BLITZ (the REAL MOD LEADER) who has been fundamental in multitasking many elements of FS has dedicated a huge amount of time, blood, sweat and tears to this has been an inspiration to us all.

Thanks to everyone who voted for NS. We're proud to still be considered so highly.
Congratulations to everyone who participated, well done.
I'm really shocked due to the fact that none of the Doom3 mods got into this list. :S
Congratulations to all the winners because they really deserve it for their hard work and big thanks for you all who support us, we'll reward you that in some time :) .
Congratulations to all the winners!
And thanks to all the players that voted for Black Mesa, glad we're still at the top of your lists!
Hey Gents at ModDB - THANKS for running such a great site. The Project Reality team was rather shocked to be in the top 100 never mind runner up for mod of the year!
Congratulations to all mods and modders and a big thanks out to the ModDB crew from the Project Reality team.

To all the modders who picked up awards, well deserved!! :D
Mint_Sauce (Rock 24 Mod - HL2 SP Mod)
keep up the good work MODDB !!!!
because of you, the mods gain popularity and so the quality of them goes up!
Moddb rules the gaming world of course.
Congrats too all!!!
This is just wonderful! Thanks for choosing BlockStorm as the best puzzle mod of the year... although there was not too much to choose, but anyway, it's something amazing... THANKS! THANKS! THAAAANKS !!!
OMG they picked the worse mod for the winners
WOOO! empires got the genre award!
I suspected that the fan base was a little small at the moment to compete against the likes of dystopia.. but well done to all the winners!
It's nice to organize such a contest !
So good job every single dude coming here & making mods, winners and loosers: in mod making, there's nothing to loose, just big experience to get !
On a side suggestion for Mod DB, I think that it would be great to have a big table resuming how the votes were put in each mod, so that everyone can have an idea of the mod scene.
Regards.
So why is it that the top 100 has no D2 mods, but the RPG award winner is a D2 mod? <confused, feeling a bit stupid>
Can anyone please tell me what mod is shown as the very first one in the video?
Huh, interesting results, but to many freakin' BF2 and Half-Life games. :P
To the Moddb.com & the modding community gaming fans,
It's a great pleasure to check the site this morning and see that our team had become the #1 MOTY - it's definitely a great honor for the team to achieve this award and we appreciate the support from everyone. It's all about having fun - from making our games for people - and the end result -- gamers enjoying what was developed.
Moddb.com is a great site as it provides updates on all games and all mods - thank you once again!
