Unknown Worlds is a self-funded, independent game company in San Francisco, CA. Our goal is simple: to unite the world through play.

We are currently working on Natural Selection 2 on our own custom engine. Past titles include Natural Selection and Zen of Sudoku. We have also worked on titles such as Previously, we worked on titles such as Titan Quest, Titan Quest: Immortal Thone, Empire Earth (two million copies sold) and Mindrover (PC Gamer 89%).

No, it was not meant to be a mod but a full stand alone game. Initially started being developed on the Source engine but due to the limitations on this engine they decided to go and start their own engine, now known as Spark.

God that was -years- ago xD Back when NS2 was first announced, to the best of my knowledge, it was supposed to be a HL2 mod :P I think that's what he's talking about.
