in this day and age alot of awesome mods are just on the steam workshop or other gaming platform.
so most popular mods on moddb tends to be from the same games years after years.
not that it is a bad thing itself but it reflect less and less what the modding community as a whole is working on.
seeing how some popular mod db mods are several years old already just speak for itself.
mod db will still be the nb1 mod sharing platform for me but half of the mods i made are not even here but on the steam workshop.

just saying this as it starts to get a tiny bit boring seeing the same old games being modded here which enhance the popularity of mods created for those games and overshadow other less popular games because thats not what most of what's left of mod db community is looking for.

also this list isn't really interesting unless you re a newcommer.
i can't speak for all projects showed here but i recognize some who released years ago.

every game community has its own preferred site, and they wont move a tiny bit. i would like to see some variety too, but not gonna happen. if you look at nexus or gamebanana, theyhave totally different games altogether.

Steam workshop is a bad thing especially because it binds your mods to your steam account. Take for m&b for example, I own a digital version at GOG, but I can't play the mods at SW because I don't own a copy at steam.

Moddb, nexus (altough nexus did some changes in their website that I don't agree with) and gamebanana are the way that mods should be created and shared: free. I will always support them over steam workshop.

This is correct, I always worried about ModDb, Nexus etc. fading in favor of the really subpar steam workshop, just because of the big user base. But I guess with the different stores nowadays storefront agnostic sites will get more exposure.

Thanks a bunch for featuring ERROR! A lot of great mods have come out this year, is it possible to vote for a mod that is not on this list?

Any mod can receive votes! If you go to the profile of any mod they'll be the option to vote for them in this year's awards :)

And no worries, ERROR really stood out, especially with the series of posts you did building a narrative around it outside of the mod too!

Not as many big non-RTSL HL2 mods as I hoped this year.

Some good mods aren't even listed, obviously you want one of the above to win. What a farce.

I think you failed to realize that if every good mod in existence was put on this list, it would be a hell of a big list. I think instead of complaining that you didn't see the mods you would like on this lists, you should be showing a bit of support for those mods that got a little bit of recognition. Yes there is a competition but at the end of the day moddb is a community of passionate modders and people who play those mods.

You're wrong. People won't know about the other mods, they'll only vote for what's listed. Listing only a selection of mods is a slap in the face of that community of passionate modders as u call them. All this year's mods should be listed to make it fair. Not that many. No wonder this site is losing good modders, they get no recognition. Not even once a year!

Hey Perok, as Masterchief said (not often I get to say that haha) if we put every mod that released in 2020 on the list, it'd be a huge, almost endless list, and we wouldn't have the time to put together the rest of the awards!

So we instead highlight instead a selection of some of the most unique, interesting and popular mods that released or had major updates each year in this feature. Are we going to miss some great mods? Most likely, nothing is perfect, but I'd encourage you to share any of your favorite mods that released this year here in the comments, that didn't make it to the list.

While we do our best to highlight great mods and their teams throughout the year, not just during the awards, through our headlines section (updated with new mods daily!), our social channels and our monthly newsletters too. Would we like to be able to do more? Always! But we're a small team with limited time.

Anyway, hope that gives some context to our decisions, and hope you and everyone enjoys the awards throughout the month :D

I believe the problem is you don't make a distinction between mods released this year and mods of all time. You should have a Mod of the Year for mods released this year, and a Best Mod for all mods. Right now, same old mods keep winning the first place for various reasons, overshadowing other good works which is kinda not fair.

Maybe the year in review shoulda been released AFTER MotY came out? Because now, if you weren't lucky enough to be on this staff-picked list, your odds of winning are suddenly slashed down to a fraction of what they were.
