Phobos: A different kind of old school

Our type of “old school” is a very different breed than the type encountered in today’s “old school”. Yes, there are similarities; We too have upped the action, speed and gore, but not to the extreme lengths seen in the new Doom game. Our levels are built for exploration, progression and environmental puzzles. These are our main qualities.

Phobos is closer to games like Half-Life or Dark Forces/Jedi Knight in spirit. Just like Classic Doom, these games are types of First Person Shooters that have all but vanished. We truly are a different kind of oldschool.

New Shotgun and other weapon changes

We think we can all agree that the Doom 3 shotgun never felt quite right. We’ve changed that and replaced the vanilla shotgun with a new and more powerful medium range shotgun. The new shotgun tears through enemies with much more ease than its Doom 3 counterpart.

We’ve also made changes to all of the familiar weapons from Doom 3, giving them a more original Doom feel and play. This includes sounds, particle effects and damage output. All this to make enemy encounters more entertaining and fun.

The weapons in Phobos will definitely give The Hordes of Hell something to fear.

New, familiar and altered enemies

Phobos includes new and familiar enemies to the Doom franchise. Expect to see the Arachnotron and Pain Elemental like id software intended them.

Like anything else in this mod we’ve also changed the Doom 3 enemies towards something more like the original Doom. Just like the weapons this includes all aspects; Enemy behaviour, look and feel. Expect faster moving demons and more enemies on screen at a time, leaving you with a combat experience more true to the original than Doom 3 was.

New story in a familiar setting

In most games, the story revolves around the player character. The problem in the case of First Person Shooters is that the main character rarely talks, emotes or acts in any way.

We want to do something different than what you expect from most first person games. We want the player to have a voice. The player isn’t you; You are the player.

The player is not an empty shell designed to contain you. He is a character - complete with a past, a present and a future. Using him as a vessel, we intend to give you a chance to experience a deep and exciting story that will spark the imagination and leave things up to your interpretation.

New Radio and Receiver assets
When we initially made the radio the player would use to call Miles, we hacked together a few brushes and patches to create something reminiscent of a communication device and a console. While it served its purpose just fine, we felt that an item this important should have higher quality assets. The following two renders and screenshot show the final product.

Subtitles
If you look closely at the screenshot above you will see that Phobos now has subtitles. These can be turned on and off in the settings menu as well as via a console command. So far we only have english subtitles, but hope to support more languages over time.

If you want to help us translate all dialogue in Doom 3: Phobos, you should message us here or by email (infoteamfuture@gmail.com). We do not at this point know which languages to support, but we imagine something along these lines.

Spanish
German
Italian
French
Russian

FCE Key + reader
In Episode 3 you will visit FCE occupied areas and facilities. For this we have created a custom key-card reader together with key-cards. Expect to use these to get further into the FCE complex.

New visual look of the click items
We updated the look and feel of our interaction buttons. These used to consist of floating yellow text. They are now a lot easier to see in the world and the button now has an icon that signifies the nature of its usage. Among others a looking glass for inspection, a wrench for utility or a speech bubble for internal reactions or external communication.

Some buttons will now be disabled instead of hidden; for instance when two different buttons both trigger voiceovers, so we can only trigger one at a time.

Voice acting and script
The script for Episode 3 is nearing finalization and soon we will be reaching out to the voice actors. We have already received the very first lines. Exciting times! This being the third episode and ultimately third act of the story, we have some new challenges to work out and it has been a very interesting and giving process. This is where you start to cash in on some of the set up you’ve done - both in terms of the story and the characters, but also in terms of location, puzzles and action set pieces.

Number of levels
We earlier reported that Episode 3 would have 7 new levels. On a factual level, the episode now has 8 levels on a file basis, but we of course use the term ‘level’ somewhat loosely. This brings the tally to 19 which is a fact we can only be truly proud of. Keep in mind that Doom 3 had 27, but those levels were much smaller.

Hi, I got this mod running and it looks great but one problem is really bugging me. The sky box keeps moving up and down like I'm using a VR headset and it really bothering me. Anyone know how to fix this because I watch videos of this mod and no one had what I had.

Try this:

1. Create a copy of doom3.exe called phobos.exe
2. Edit the .bat file to use Phobos.exe

No. Phobos only works with Vanilla Doom 3. We don't support any source ports. Yet.
