FFVIII Crystal

By Leythalknight

FFVIII Crystal is a rebalancing mod for FFVIII that began as a self-imposed class-based challenge playthrough roughly 10 years ago and still retains some of its features. It attempts to make each character more distinct, dial back some of the overtuned mechanics and abilities of FFVIII, and make the game more challenging while keeping the "flavor" of the original game.

Final Fantasy Tactics: Rebirth

By Rodman49

Updated Reis

Final Fantasy Tactics: Rebirth (FFT: Rebirth) is a modification for Final Fantasy Tactics which features a rebalancing of almost everything in the game, in particular classes but also items, abilities, characters, random encounters, and storyline battles. The modification also features a few new graphics and a complete overhaul of the speed system. This mod caters to an audience already familiar with Final Fantasy Tactics - those who wish that some of the weaker classes were better balanced and want some new interesting and refreshing encounters.

Final Fantasy XII: The Struggle for Freedom

By Eternal248

Struggle for Freedom (SFF) is a difficulty/rebalancing mod for Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age (PC). The ultimate goal of this mod is to create a more challenging, rewarding FFXII experience where tactics are rewarded, and where battles are more thrilling than ever. To that end, enemies are tougher, faster, and hit harder. Ultimately, if you want to be free of the Empire's grasp, you'll need to struggle for your freedom. Each party member has their own role to play in the party, and each battle fought truly feels like a fight. Play using either the new set jobs for each character, each filling a unique role, or play using the old 12 Job License Boards.

Remake, Rebirth, Re...Something

Final Fantasy VII is one of the most fondly loved entries in the classic FF line-up - defining an era of RPG video games and remaining nostalgia bait for many today. You might be forgiven for thinking the remake was a simple grab at these fans, but not so - the Remake is actually remarkably divergent from the original, taking liberties in everything from characters, to storyline, to gameplay, and this is all an intended part of a larger plan regarding FF7, for much like its brethren in the Final Fantasy franchise, the game is a gateway to its own miniature universe.

Roleplaying Anew

Final Fantasy 7 Remake is just the first in a series of FF7 spin-off titles, with a central trilogy geared around the game's story. The second entry will be titled "Rebirth", which has connotations all of its own, and the third title is currently unknown (though we reckon the clever thing to do is stay with the "Re" motif). The Remake available on PC is its own edition, Intergrade, coming with a mission featuring another major character from the game.

The remake's gameplay takes a step back from the classic turn-based system of old Final
Fantasy titles and moves into the real-time third-person action of the newer games

The Final Say

Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade (which just rolls right off the tongue) is available on Steam for $70 USD/£70 GBP, though the game has a sale on at the time of writing until the 23rd of June.

Decided I'd try this out over the PSX emulation I use for all my old games, its good, but there are issues. Which I'll list below in hopes they get fixed but FYI theres a lot of artwork that still needs converting to 16:9 (Ice Caverns for example) so those of you expecting 16:9 throughout, you won't get it.

1. In some cases artwork that is still 4:3 leads to some hilarious results like seeing characters that are meant to be off-screen just standing there, floating in black nothingness. When Zidane goes to visit Dagger in the castle when shes prepping to be queen for instance.

2. When searching for teasure on the world map with the chocobo mini game the hint screenshots are a blurry, pastile-like mess.

3. Possibly just a result of the vanilla PC port, but PS4 controller support is horrible, D-Pad doesn't work for one thing and in games like this the D-Pad is still useful.

4. World map and battle textures could really do with replacing, again I don't know if this is the result of the mod or vanilla PC port but to a texturer like me it sticks out like a sore thumb where the textures aren't true HD someone has just slapped two original textures together and flipped one so the matching face meets with the other.

5. I would have liked to see this mod address a few universal dislikes about FF9 such as not being able to control when a character uses their Trance "limit break" and having spells such as Water, level 3 elemental spells, Curaga, etc, target all allies or enemies.

Aside from these things, good work, 7/10 :)
