Wow 2012 you were certainly a feature packed year. Every mod that flew the flag of release this year expanded our horizons, crushed expectations and fulfilled fantasies. In order to make the battlefield for the 2012 Mod of the Year awards even we have compacted a whole year into 4 different articles to make it easier for you at home to cast your votes. Here is the second article ranging from April right up until the end of June for twenty dozen.
Prepare to see the most disturbing, sadistic and morbid manifestation of violence that you ever seen in your life. BRUTAL DOOM is a gameplay enhancement mod for the Zdoom, GZDoom and Skulltag engines that creates a brand new experience that simply needs to be experienced for fans of the original games. Simply put this mod leaves the gameplay of Doom 1/2 (depending on what game you play) relatively untouched bringing brutality, gore and attitude to the table. You could almost imagine that in another reality Brutal Doom could have been what we all know as Doom today, meaning in that reality this editor would be gushing about a mod removing the fun from Doom..... I like our current timeline better.
Warning: After you see it, it cannot be unseen!
A 225 km2 open world post-soviet state and one of the areas hit by a new and presently unknown infection which has wiped out most of the world's population. You are one of the few who have survived and now you must search this new wasteland in order to fight for your life against what is left of the indigenous population, now infected with the disease. Go Solo, team up with friends or take on the world as you choose your path in this brutal and chilling landscape using whatever means you stumble upon to survive. Not just a mod but an experience creator. More organic stories have come from DayZ then most games will ever hope to make. This is why DayZ is so special.
Overwatch pits a team of rebels playing cooperatively in first-person (the Resistance) against one player who assumes the role of commander to the Combine forces (the Overwatch), controlling units and the environment around them from a bird's-eye view.
Rebels have their usual assortment of weaponry to fight off the enemy (guns, explosives) as well as a few surprises to aid members of their own squad (ballistic shield, health packs).
The Overwatch, on the other hand, has the might of the Combine forces at his disposal, both humanoid and synth, as well as the ability to affect the world they are all in (breaching walls, collapsing escape routes).

Continuum is just a footnote? Is every year going to be just FPS games getting the spotlight?
Not surprising, unfortunately.
I'm not sure there's a general appreciation for the relative difficulty of modding a given genre. In my experience, having worked on both FPS and RTS, they're at opposite ends of the spectrum.
Perhaps genre specific awards would be a way to even the playing field? Like the Golden Joystick awards? I have favourite FPS and RTS etc games, it's a shame that all but the FPS gets recognised.
2010. Nehrim and Third Age Total War. I rest my case. Other mods get recognised and get awards. Heck Dear Esther won an award and that mod was WAY out in left field (not really in a bad way; I liked the game. But it was definitely odd).
more DAYZ??? There are surely better mods to mention up there.
i know, dayz is just embarrassing it self
BRING ON GREY AND CRY OF FEAR
Cry of Fear is in the Q1 article.
Indeed. Also, what was with that name, anyway?
My favourite, and most played mods this year are by far:
Freeworlds: Tides of War
The Dark Mod
Third Age - Total War
