Wheels of War

With Wheels of War, we want to bring back the awesome feeling when playing Carmageddon all those years ago - the initial racing, the wasting of other cars, collecting power-ups, insane stunts and running over zombies. There will be powerups/powerdowns, a credits system, upgradable cars (via armour, offensive, and engine characteristics), checkpoint style racing (i.e, ability to roam), destructable cars, and a stunts system. Note that this is not a port/clone or rip of Carmageddon. We are taking it's single player concept, evolving it to multiplayer, and creating a whole new environment for it to exist in.

A game design document has been released to the public on the website focusing on our Free For All Campaign game mode here. We have many other modes planned, but our first alpha release will focus on this one.

Features of Interest (Note: All are not available yet, but will be implemented in due course):

  • Zombie ragdoll effects.
  • In-game soundtrack featuring Intro/Fadeout, Jack Glass, LucienNine Inch Nails.and
  • Dynamic campaigns via track voting.
  • Large library of powerups.
  • Multiple gametypes.
  • Intuitive, simple graphical iterfaces.
  • Voiceover system.
  • Locational VOIP support.
  • Improved controller configuration options.
  • Game statistics and awards.
  • User defined music directory with shuffle.
  • Ground-breaking radio commentary which adapts around user defined music.
  • Offline mode to practise stunts and adapt to vehicle handling.
  • Selection of vehicles to choose from, each with thier own differing sets of charateristics.
  • In-game live upgrading of vehicle armour, offense and engine properties.
  • Involved stunt system, with ambition-based rewards.
  • No set theme. It allows us to focus on gameplay at this early stage rather than looks.
  • Overhauled vehicle sound effect system.
  • More features to be decided upon...

Public Alpha Released
GET IT! - For Windows and Linux!
Download Mirrors:

You need the 0.1a full install. Unzip it to your ETQW Directory.:

wheelsofwar_alpha01a_win.zip

You also need the 0.1b patch, download and install this over the top of 0.1a:

wheelsofwar_alpha01b_patch.zip

Just unzip the contents of the downloaded files into your /Enemy Territory: QUAKE Wars/ directory!

The above download requires Enemy Territory: QUAKE Wars. If you do not have this, then you will need to purchase it before playing wheels of war. It's a great game in itself, and can be found for as little as £7 on sites like amazon uk for those interested!

This version is a very early alpha release. We expect that you will find bugs, and you may feel that the gameplay is not up to the quality of which you expected. Zombies, stunts, upgrades and more will be added in time.

We have decided to release this early as community involvement is high on our list of priorities. We believe instead of having a long closed testing phase, by releasing early and frequent releases we can take your comments and critisism on board quickly and allow a higher quality game when we eventually come to release the 1.0 version.

We would love to hear your feedback, good or bad, over in the forums at Wheelsofwar.co.uk . Thanks!

Hey peeps, time for an update.

We were really pleased with the reaction from everyone who played the alpha release. All were
unanimous when it came to how the vehicle handling needed overhauled, but in general people understood why we released and what we are aiming for, which is great. A simple look around the download mirrors and using bandwidth usage counts from salteh.net shows that we have had more than 2,000 downloads - not too bad for an unfinished alpha!

One problem we had was trying to get servers outside of Europe. M8D International are awesome and still have an EU server running the 0.1b alpha if you still want to give it a shot, but as with games with major gameplay elements yet to be implemented, races rarely last more than 20 minutes and finding a time when multiple players are online is hard.

Anyway; we have had a little break and are now getting back into the action, and I come bearing gifts!

Firstly, our 3rd place winner of the Car Design contest will be happy to see this high poly render by GW. We present, "Waroeels":

waroeels waroeels waroeels

Next, GW also has been hard at work on a new skin for Optimus Crime, this time making it a little more evil:

black optimus crime

Finally, we have the zombies. AudiC has been working on these for a while, as well as madNORMan, for creating the animations. Here are two of many more to come:

We hope you like all the media here, we should be giving you more in the coming weeks and months before we release Alpha 0.2, details of which will be coming in another news post soon!

Thankyou, and good night.

You never know, as with Quake3 if ETQW in time becomes open source we could make a stand alone version, but that is way out there in the future! :)

Hmmm, looks very similar to DIPRIP (Die In Pain, Rest In Peace HL2 Vehicular Combat Mod).

Funnily enough, I started thinking about Wheels of War around the time DIPRIP was launched, if not before. However there are some pretty clear differences: We have racing, and do not include vehicular weapons mounted on the cars, whereas they do. It changes the gameplay totally :) We will also be adding zombies v.s. vehicles at some point as a game mode, I have yet to hear anything from the DIPRIP camp about their future game mode plans.

I'm interested in this mod, not only because I still play and love Carmageddon as much as I did when it was first released, but because you have taken such a great idea and brought it into a new great engine without just porting it as many other teams are prone to try. I hope that since the video you have posted you have improved on the collisions between vehicles a little bit as they look a little weird, I expect to be able to flip over the bonnet of many-a-car in this mod, not just glance off as that gives the impression of little damage being done... Although I have not yet tried this mod, I WILL try it out when I get my hands on ETQW and report back to you! Thanks.

Hey, IF you start ETQW using the shortcut options specified in the readme then it should boot into Wheels of War, and from there the server browser will only show Wheels of War severs.
