After "Jailbreak!" I am no longer writing short reviews for HL2 match/vs based mods as they all seem to suffer from the same gameplay style just in a different skin, however future reviews will be done in the actual review panel!

There are alot of ambitious mods out there (Resident Evil mod #425 for example) and this ones in the same river if not the same boat, S.T.A.L.K.E.R is held together by style mood and music....a few things that are more difficult then others to emulate especially when considering how different the Source engine is from the one used in stalker, very little of it lends itself towards being a stalker mod but thats not to say its not possible.....just will take alot of extra work for this dev team....more so then most at least.

I wish you guys good luck, but till then im gona keep playing S.T.A.L.K.E.R:Call of Pripyat, its cheap short and wonderfully replay worthy.

Reock - - 28 comments @ Jailbreak: Source 0.6 - Released!

Reock's Reviews has returned at last for Jailbreak! Dinosaurs vs robots in a constant struggle to kill your enemy while releasing your allies so they can kill more enemies... This mod has been long in the works and shows it with a flashy xbox-esque heavy use of neon colors and flashy chrome weaponry, a unique but somewhat problimatic gameplay setup where the players who die are placed into a prison were they can eather be rescued, exicuted or attempt to escape. This last one can be a bit troublesome as the difficulty of escaping dosnt always reflect well on the time constraints of some maps, one may be fairly easy (dodging lasers ala resident evil and escaping out a door) while another is a grueling maze of death and super mario style jumps.

If you enjoyed mods like Dystopia youll probly enjoy this one as well, though I will warn you jailbreak suffers from a over abundence of exposives between sticky mines, rockets , grenade launchers and even explosive barrels laying around. Getting blown up will get old fast, so either blow them up first or be super sneaky/lucky.

Good luck and enjoy.

Reock's Reviews!

Not a bad game, more so as its one of those 'free to play, pay for perks' games that have been cropping up of late. Graphics are fairly nice, not cutting edge but I would put it around everquest 2 standards of art style/graphics. S2 is basicly alot like playing any other team based online vs game, that being you will often be faceraped while a new or incompetent commander (thats the guy building things for your team RTS style)lets your side get steamrolled by the other and the players on your side flail and scream like two year olds.

On the other foot, the combat system of the game is very clumsy, trying to do too much and reminds me alot of Bushido Blade for playstation, remember that one? Attacking, blocking, and trying to 'jump attack' to break other peoples blocks while most people just strafe behind you, all coming across mostly as frustrating.

Now don't get me wrong, its a interesting game and worth playing, but it is VERY unfriendly to newer players, for you WoW players out there a good analogy would be, imagine starting the game for the first time, and being chucked into a lvl80 battleground despite there being a 'bracket' function in S2, more you play the higher your account level goes, this functions only to see what games you can access.

Then there is the kiddies, just wait untill a dwarf humps your corpse with the taunt (n key) or some little euro kid repeatedly says over the mic "Can I haz zi speedz boost??" Im sure the clan/ladder groups get this less, noobtown is the pits! If you can tolerate, or blend in with them long enough maybe you can move onto better pastures!

To wrap this up, lets just say if your easily frustrated or annoyed, pass this game up. But if you enjoy RTS/guildwars style play (the first person action is a joke), and/or enjoy games like halo and counter-strike then this might be quite enjoyable for you.

Reock's Reviews!

Okay so this review is a little....late, but I only now discovered this game so here we go.

For a demo there is ALOT to do, the game itself is simple but pretty and would do damn well on a DS or maby the Wii, both of which would be suitable for the 'verse' song mechanics of aquaria. Now lets get down to the nitty gritty, this is a 2D exploration/puzzle sorta game, with the entire thing going on underwater, for those who played SNES's donkey kong, this game feels alot like the water levels. Beyond that however, it goes to a whole other level for such a simple game. The aquatic backgrounds (which are layered, giving a very 'deep' apearence.) and the music of the game is top notch, the main ocean them (played near the heroines home) if very relaxing and enjoyable in its own right. Id buy this game just for the music, though the price tag advertised in the demo is $30 which strikes me as a little steep, its still entertaining and relaxing at the same time....though I do not advise playing it while sleepy, the travel time and music will make you faceplant your keyboard in no time flat.

Reock's Reveiws!

Hey not bad, first off ITS FREE, thats always a bonus and when its free and dosnt make my computer explode, even better. For anyone who ever wanted to try Quake3 but didn't spend the money at the time, or don't want to go back and spend less money for a out of date game, this game here is perfect. You get all of the fast 'frag fest' goodness, gorey explosions and the occasional skimpy clad character model...did I mention terminator style skele robots and cat girls? Its not a graphical powerhouse, don't get me wrong there, this puppy ain't no Halo 3, but on the other hand its quite small and easy to run. Won't take most people three days to download and no need for some dual core processor powered by god and video cards that make bill gates weep.

If your looking for something to do, or something for your friends to do, this works quite well, just download it, slap in some bots (which for the record, fight dirty, dont fallow them they always have a rocket launcher stashed somewhere in that bikini.) and go to town, my only thought in hindsight is a real single player campaign (ala half-life, not player vs bots arena match.) would be nice to see, but this engine might not be suitable for that sort of thing.

Still playing this one for now but it seems interesting, alot of work has been put into this mod but it has some annoying issues, some of the files are corrupt prone (perticularly ones occuring right after autosaves, such as the second time you encounter the old man on the ship. Autosave, then if you die or reload and go near him again, BAM game crash.) The lack of crosshairs or even ironsights is pretty weak however, making any sniping at ranged enemies such as stalkers tedious at best, there might be a option to turn these on but iv not found it through my searches. I wouldnt call this the 'right way to do HL2' but, its better then your average zombie wacker mod....once you get passed the bugs and framerate problems caused by overuse of fire effects. I gave it a 5 out of 10 but it has the potential to go much higher with further developement and bug tweaks. (Though some may be fixed by the patch, i forgot to download that o.O)

Being a zombie on infection maps is pretty weak currently, players just find some obscure spot to hide atop and use weak knockback weapons to keep zombies at bay too easily. Might I suggest giving the infected a leap ability kind of what like some of the in game zombies use, with some sort of charge bar so it can only be used every few moments. To keep it balanced though take alittle damage from the zombies so humans don't become a infected after only a hit or two. Also barracade items should always be destructable, but with a high damage threshhold. You never want the infection rounds to become little more then build a wall and wait for the round to end.

Reock's Premature Reviews!

Okay generaly I don't review a game that hasn't at least been considered by the developer as in its 'polished' version but after some time playing GE:S I decided to break the mold. This mod tweaked the common source art style to be more like the games forebearer, Nintendo 64's Goldeneye. There were not many players on when I first got going with GE:S, about 20-30 or so across four active servers, with twenty seven others being empty at the time.

For people unfamiliar with the other version of Goldeneye the first thing you will notice once you pick a team (if available) and a character (from a caste of various 007 heroes and villains) is the lack of crosshairs at first. Fundamentally you take a more realistic(ish) aproach to shooting people, point gun in there direction, pull trigger untill someone dies. There is the option of 'aiming' more carefully, holding down the shift key will bring up a red circle/crosshair combo at the cost of much slower movement rate.

I personally would have preferred a Ironsight approach to the aim system but if i recall (its been a very very long time) the red circle/crosshair aim is from N64's goldeneye so i can see why they went this route. Some of the game modes were alittle odd and got annoying fast (particularly 'License to Kill' basically 1 shot kill with all guns, this created a TF2 style spawn and die fiasco though I did get the most back to back kills in that mode.) If you enjoy TF2 but have gotten tired of being screwed out of not having your class updated, you'll probably enjoy GE:S even if its just in the beta phase.

Im eager to see the finished product of GE:S but don't take its 'beta' tag too seriously, this is worth downloading and playing especialy if your a James Bond fan.

Thanks for the clarifications and explanations KindredPhantom, its hard to create a detail and at the same time compact review with out making multiple posts, that 2000 character limit creeps up on you a lot faster then you would think! My experience with Dystopia has mostly been within the game itself, the bunnyhop comment however stemmed from a post on the dystopia forums regarding version 1.2, I only mentioned it rather then expanded on the term because my experience is only with 1.1.

My reviews are mostly geared towards players who have yet to download the mod/game they are reading about and I basicly try to give them a heads up on pros and cons for a game so they know if they want to spend the time downloading it. I usualy don't go into term/tip details like i did with dystopia but its one I have more experience with then most of my reviewed games so I got a touch carried away, even then however its visibly curtailed. Any player who wants to learn more about any game I review, is probably better off going to the developers website!

Reock - - 28 comments @ Obsidian Conflict

Reock's Reveiws!

Obsidian Conflict, a Co-op mod for the source engine! This mod pretty much does what it says, very much like the Synergy mod with a bit more flexibility with the ability to change the colors of your HUD/flashlight, has a built in music player (which unfortunately will negate any soft spoken players who try to communicate with you, speak up people!) and the addition of functions not seen in synergy or any of the HL2 series, portable energy shields and a stealth device both of which run on a secondary energy source.

Where as synergy servers generally running HL2, EP1 or EP2 maps OC servers often have custom maps going instead, though it is capable of supporting any of previously mentioned single players games for co-op use. As such I find it prudent to have both co-op mods instead of picking one over the other, giving players a larger selection range.

Although OC seems to load maps faster then synergy, it still has some issues. Some of the maps you will run into will eather be too easy, too hard, or just lame in general as they are designed for the max number of players and when the more common numbers found on OC are in play things get very tricky, if not completely impossible. There ARE however quite a few very nice maps, some though require you to make use of your new gadgets, im especially fond of the stealther but some enemies can see you still (antlions for example).

All in all, if you want more co-op experience then this is a perfect partner for Synergy, but you should probly avoid the puzzle maps, there crapshoots.

Reock - - 28 comments @ Zombie Master

Reock's Reveiws

Here we have everyones favorite subject, zombies, tweaked with a RTS style control by a 'zombie master'. The humans get a FPS point of veiw and usualy have a set number of objectives to complete, its a good concept and is executed fairly well in this mod but the game suffers heavily from lack of map builders and many of the maps in play currently have a strong resemblance to "Metal Gear VR' and suffer from such a heavy use of traps that these levels should be referred to as "Trap Master" instead of zombie master.

Some servers (Sammy's Servers) have a interesting RPG like upgrade system that lets you take points for completing a round and use them to buff up your human character, more hp/sprint/hpregen/ammoregen. This is pretty neat but currently these servers lack a dedicated server and thus are prone to suddenly poofing or restarting. For people going to play on these (and if you get ZM, you probly should as its more fun then normal ZM maps) be wary, they have the server set to autokick people who are idle for more then a VERY short time (I actully got kicked once as ZM while spawning zombies, error i suppose) and the some of the admins are prone to taking liberties with there powers....avoid water melons.

All in all if you enjoy online zombie play and want to try something different then the cookie cutter human vs infected survival play of other mods then Zombie Master will do fine but don't expect anything spectacular from the human side of play.

Ah damn i forgot to mention the 'max payne' style drug induced slow motion aspect of the game, and the 'traumas' that can hinder the player, which i found to be annoying as you often had to stop and heal a specific body part even if your overall health was good making things overly complex at times.

Reock - - 28 comments @ Get a Life

Reock's Reveiws!

As far as mods go, this one is pretty well made. It offers a fair amount of challenge although some parts can be distinctly more difficult then the rest of the game (in fact the first firefight gave me more trouble then the last boss battle). "Get a life" affords a dark horror atmosphere that shares many traits with resident evil and silent hill games, the design team behind this game did a pretty good job and If you like this sort of game or simply need something to kill time with 'get a life' will do the job nicely. However I should warn any potential players what there getting into, you will die. You will get squished, fall to your doom, magicly catch grenades (with out the option of throwing them back nick fury style) and get poked by random geometry.

This mods VERY dark, and the inability to have your flashlight out and a gun out at the same time makes it rather tricky, but that pales in hindsight of the number of times you will die because you walked into a room and a I-beam droped on you. My personal tips: Download the mod, save often, and a led pipe/gun wack upside the head of a average zombie works just as well as the bullets youll be swimming in.

Reock - - 28 comments @ Eternal Silence

Reock's Reveiws!

I'll be honest with you, I didn't play this one much but it wasn't the games fault per say, It just didn't grip me is all.

ES is probably the most sci-fi tricked out mod on the source engine, the space ships were quite neat, if a bit hard to learn, the space combat put me in mind of Colony Wars but I never could hit anything, in fact my first time playing I grabed the transport ship and like four guys jumped in with me before i took off, im flying along thinking. "These guys are so screwed." But I actully managed to find my way to the asteroid we needed to be going to before anyone figured out I had no clue where I was going, or for that matter how to stop once i got there. The ground battles, if you can realy call it 'ground' being in a space station, ship or asteroid, where pretty cut and dry. Shoot bad guy, don't let bad guy capture objective, or get away with the bomb. Kind of Domination meets Capture the Flag, The weaponry was pretty diverse, though I personaly enjoyed the scouts ability to plop there main gun down on a tri-pod and control it with a remote from nearby.

If your bored , need a new mod to play or just like spaceship combat then you might enjoy Eternal Silence although I didn't realy play it enough to get a feel for its flaws, I do know It addresses latency the same way CS:S does, that being the very very annoying rubber band effect and the space ships radar is very vague making it tricky to find enemy ships with out pointing your ship twards obvious signs of combat and humping the target function.

Reock - - 28 comments @ Dystopia

Reock's Reveiws!

As far as mods go, this one is so well done you would wonder why CS:S and TF2 cost money (sorta). Three weight classes, nineteen weapons(Including machine pistol, grenade types and melee weapons.), and a whole gaggle of Cybernetic enhancements/Implants make Dystopia one of the most , if not the most diverse game on the source engine. Thats not to say Dystopia is free from problems, though some might call them features, I do not.

Bunnyhopping, this term can encompass two functions when used, one is bouncing around like a two year old on crack to make yourself harder to hit, this is seen alot in games like Counter-Strike and always feels cheap as it takes from the games other aspects, such as tactics and aiming. The other is the practice I mentioned has been in and out of Dystopias various versions, with talk of it being perposly re-implimented in the next release, I will wait and add a footnote here when that version comes out, regarding the second bunnyhop term.

The only other real issue new players to Dystopia will notice is some weapons in the right hands will make it frustratingly impossible to accomplish anything in some situations. There are ways to counter them of coarse but your looking at forks vs knives, they have the proverbial edge. Most notably is the laser rifle used by the Light class, basicly the AWP of Dystopia, Indirect fire weapons and getting in close are your only options, other then being a better shot/better cover with a LR yourself.

Important note! Dystopia has friendly fire on always, so always check your fire but remember, accidents will happen.(Though if it happens five times in a single match against the same person you get kicked.)

All in all, definatly worth the space on your HD, If you enjoy more Sci-fi games and don't mind being put on some blood pressure meds of coarse.

Footnote to new players: Avoid learning cyberspace publicly, dystopia's hardcore players get rabid and throw temper tantrums over this.

Reock - - 28 comments @ Insurgency

Reock's Reveiws!

Basicly what you have here is Americas Army meets Counter-Strike, though my first experience of Insurgency was on the 'office' type map and made me go 'oh, CS 2.0'. Theres actully more to it then that, the command system is pretty interesting but not very functional outside of clan matches. Ironsights are always fun, and most weapons have a pretty serious recoil, and much like in AA you suffer penalties for trying to run and gun, sprinting totaly lowers your weapon, my personal fav is the relative lack of 'bunnyhopping' that plagues most source games, jumping up and down in insurgency while someone is shooting at you will just amount to them laughing over your corpse.

Overall if you enjoy counter-strike, you'll like Insurgency more. I however just wasn't dazzled enough to hang onto this mod, too much in common with two games I didn't realy get into.
