...katana! So yeh, my apologies to the Dystopia team for not being more subtle and constructive :)
Oh well. It sounds like you had a bit of a bad experience.
Truth be told, you're not the only person who found mêlée to be at least marginally overpowered in Dystopia - that said, two things I'd like to point out about the katana:
a) the reason it's a sword (more specifically, a katana) is linked to the source material for the mod - cyberpunk literature, and in this case, Neal Stephenson's Snow Crash specifically, where the main character (whose name is Hiro Protagonist, I kid you not) uses a katana (because he's part Japanese, and everyone knows the Japanese use swords right?)
b) it's a specific design decision by the team that mêlée weapons be useful as weapons, rather than mildly quirky ornaments.
Just settin' the record straight...
Fun fact about Dystopia: It takes 6 katana hits for a Light to take out an undamaged Heavy. Heavy instantly kills Lights with the Fatman Fist.
Well, for what it is worth it, everybody now knows that you hate them. I mean it is even written on the flash rotator on moddb.com :)
About Stargate: TLS - I don't see any of the two teams as superior. They are different in equipment and weaponry. While the alien team has powerful weapons, the human team has quicker firing weapons. Both teams play totally differently, but they manage to be very even when it comes to balancing. And that's remarkable in my opinion.
The "show download" link seems to be messed up.
Fixed
There is a random gametype mode per map coming in beta 3.1 for GoldenEye Source. :p
Nice piece. First time to listen to you guys!
Great for you guys to explain the sponsorship bit. I'm not going to comment specific on it, or my own personal feelings - I think enough has been said in other threads about it and I feel it would be irrelevant.
Whether people like the decision or not, at least they know the reasons and other pertinent information regarding it.
Great response man, good to see there are a few mature people still on the internet.
Ya, after reading Oma's post I listened to the modcast, paying particular attention to the sponsorship issue. It really cleared up some issues and you explained the points well. ModDB's crew is doing the best for our community and they need to do this through sponsorship.
So, thank you guys for doing what you do. Most of us know that it was in the best interest of our community.

GoldenEye Single player mapper for the Source Engine: Youtube.com
Worth a look imo.
Thanks for the kind words, Henley : )
Ah no worries :D
BTW Guys their is the is an New Player Guide: Dystopia-game.com and a Manual: Dystopia-game.com for Dystopia that will help if you read them.
If you need a bit of help, feel free to ask. I and most other players are willing to help just ask.
I'll be sure to go over it, thank you.
No he won't, LIES!!
It's true...
It's probably true :/
F U Ryan and Dave!
As long as someone finds it useful it doesn't matter. lol
I was surprise when Golden Eye Source had that many servers cause it didnt when i used to play the other ones
Lol, im tempted to listen to it again after i see the awesome title/artwork for this modcast:P. Great work guys, enjoyable as always!
Ryan you are evil!
"So yeah none of us except a guy who hates Katanas has played this game and uh yeah..."
Seriously? The large attraction of the game is the complete focus on team-play. You will not have an enjoyable experience with a bunch of new players because they don't know what the heck they are doing. The game has an extreme amount of depth, I wouldn't call it an "aquired taste" as much as "hey guess what there's actually stuff to do in this game besides buy guns and shoot them!"
If you like strategy based games which require coordination and proper execution to win, then Dystopia is for you. If you want a game to just pick up and play once a weekend, Dystopia is probably not for you. It is truly a hard-core gamer's game.
"Oh a game with a katana?! This sucks men!" LOL
Very nice modcast.
wow, the chrome/firefox thing.
i've just done the exact same thing.
you guys get more entertaining every time.
another hour and a half gone, and it was worth it.
For me as non-native speaker it is very hard to follow the Modcast, I would appreciate if there were something like verbal-headlines.
To Dnst, Sorry but i'm not a native speaker either (Belgium) and i understand them perfectly, try improving your English
+1 me too, I mean, I understand them perfectly and I'm Argentinian.
No offence but that whole katana bit was painful and made me switch off the episode. Swearing is not an opinion and sometimes the opinions expressed on the modcast are unhelpful malformed utterences that do more to cloud the mod landscape than shine a light on it. Don't get me wrong, I love the podcast but more constructive, thought out responses (even if you have to write it down, or write down the pertinant points) would be much more easy on the ear and would really help understand the mods.
Take this example quote on map design in Eternal Silence @ ~18:30.
"Nah, yeah, it's the red ship. And, ah, the problem is, you know, I'll ahh, be looking at the map and I'll be going 'OK, the hanger is to my right.' And I go and I run this way and then there is this ******* wall. So I go back... alright so if I go left and I run left and I go round and I end up back where I started. And I'm like 'What?' Then I try again ... it was sad ... I played this map 1000 times"
Thank small mercies for the comments about flat textures and the level having a more vertical design otherwise I would have had *no idea* what you were talking about.
Not trying to be a hater, just trying to offer my opinion that a more structured aproach to comments and criticisms would be preferable.
Thanks for your crits, there is quite a few things that still need to be ironed out with how people talk on the show. I think you will find guests ie not myself or Ryan will have quite surprising opinions and sometimes wont be able to express themselves clearly. Take for example in this episode Brian cant explain why he dose not like Dystopia so he blames the katana's. This is why we stopped talking about all releases and just talk about the ones we know, no matter how much scripting there is always going to be someone who thinks differently and they will have counter-point etc. So having it more of a natural conversation rather then just us reading out dot points as to why its good or bad is more entertaining as a whole.
Hey Fiasco, thanks for the feedback. I agree wholeheartedly with your opinions on the comments and criticisms on the show. On a personal level, I strive to be as constructive and knowledgeable as possible about the things we talk about on the show (maybe it's why I always have so much to say :P).
The show is a mix of personalities and its partly the random discussion that contributes to a lot of the entertainment. I still do cringe though when there's a ton of misinformation that could have been easily avoided with a few minutes research before recording (Episode 10-I wasn't there :P). In my eyes, it devalues the content-what's the point if the information you're giving out is nothing more than vague (or false) approximations?
In the end, it just comes down to peoples' ability to articulate their gameplay experiences accurately and employing the vocabulary to do so. We're still shuffling people around and still looking for a reliable 3rd and possibly 4th chair. Thanks for the comments, people like you are the reason I come onto the show. I wonder if anyone else feels the same way?
I don't see how you guys could do a segment on Dystopia when none of you have really played 1.2 in a experienced game.
Ah we did play it....
Yeah, we failed to mention it was the internal supporter-only beta 1.2 that we played prior to its steamworks launch.
Just my opinion but these podcasts would go way smoother if you guys took more notes and had more structure. There was no need for this to take 89 min. All the Umm's and Ahhh's and inconsistency's between the group just delay and break the flow of the conversation which from a listening standpoint is kinda lame.
Good on you for helping expose mods though.
Just noticed someone above me said much the same thing I was thinking. Well put "Fiasco".
Looking back at all of my PerfectDark MISSION'S, now knowing that the one's I wanted to Show, I can't and are the Future, and are still CLASSIFIED.
