Portal: Prelude, as its name states it, is an unofficial prequel to the game Portal. Its story revolves around the pre-GlaDOS epoch, even before she was plugged in. At this time, test subjects were monitored by real Aperture Science employees, whose work was tedious, lengthy and repetitive. This is why they decided to build a great artificial intelligence that could both replace them in these difficult tasks, and also take responsibility for many other tasks within the complex and compete with Black Mesa's superiority. All employees of the Aperture Science complex are now eagerly awaiting GlaDOS. Maybe even a little too eagerly, as the upcoming events will tell... This game is totally free. It offers a bit more gameplay hours than the original Portal, with 8 chapters, 19 test chambers, 48 challenges, 6 advanced maps, a brand new storyline and more than 400 lines of english speech with dozens of subtitles translations.

The Ball

Unreal Tournament 3

Toltec_Studios wrote:The Ball is a single player action and puzzle mod for Unreal Tournament 3. It competes in the MakeSomethingUnreal Contest, and it has won a double first prize in Phase 1 (Best Gametype - Best Use of Physics). The Ball offers an adventure that puts you in the boots of a geologist who gets stuck in a cavern and bumps onto an ancient and Toltec complex holding a mysterious ball. While making your way through the internal workings of ancient ziggurats, golden cities, and huge caverns, your only companion is a giant gold and metal-shelled ball, a mysterious artifact in its own right, that you use to make your way through a series of rooms and caverns, and to crush enemies with. As you progress through the mod, slowly the real purpose of this gigantic Toltec complex becomes clear, and you are sucked into a thousands of years old story of betrayal and secrecy.

In Kreedz Climbing no map is the same and can vary with any combination of these skills. It's a race against time and against other players with any discipline in the game.

Portal Prelude has my vote. Have played the rest and they are good, but the thought and comedic talent that went into the mod, not to mention the mapping, was brilliant. Congrats to all on the list...

I haven't played Kreedz but as far as I know it's actually a multiplayer game? cause I heard they did something to make a high ping feel normal, and singleplayer games don't have ping.

Anyway all of these have a good chance to win so can't decide which I should cheer on :P oh well I'll cheer for Kreedz then since the lead developer of it is on my team as well :D
GO KREEDZ!

umm Kreedz Climbing is a terrible choice. It's not a single player mod. What? It HAS multiplayer, and Kreedz does not fit the Denotation of a single player mod.

Not only that but I think it's just a terrible choice for the selection.

GfG is a great excuse to launch up UT3 again. I keep waiting for the next installment of "The Ball" and must have missed this mod. As for winning I'm split between The Ball and Portal: Prelude.

I can see The Ball doing so much more and from what i've read they're doing just that but from what i've played in 2008 I'd have to say that Portal: Prelude was what Valve's Portal should have been "Mildly challenging" and not a walk in the park. I really enjoyed Portal: Prelude so it has my vote with The Ball a close second and i'll definitely be playing GfG

As for Kreedz, I found it challenging like old TFC conc map challenges but wasn't happy with the quality of the maps and didn't see it bring anything new to the table. Also thank you Henley for clearing up the SP/MP confusion.

Tough choice, haven't played any :) Truth be told, previous year (Paranoia &c) and next year (Cry Of Fear &c) should be a little more exciting as far as SP mods go. That being said, I can't really be the arbiter here since I haven't played any but according to media, I'd choose between GFG#2 and Delta Sector.

It's a race in the sense that you can establish record times by just playing by yourself. Just like how you can compete in Mirror's Edge time trial runs, yet i wouldn't call that game multiplayer :P

If you don't call Kreedz multiplayer then you obviously haven't played it. Very few people play Kreedz singleplayer, it's a multiplayer experience. The idea of a single player has it's own gameplay and ideals. The words, "single player" denote an entirley different gameplay genre. This was a terrible choice on ModDB's part. Idon't see how they can't see it. It's not single player just BECAUSE it has the option of playing by yourself.

Double this. They focused on annoying and complicate flinging. Portal is about puzzles and not trying to break the mouse of players. Difficult puzzles requiring your brain to solve would have been the way to go but instead it had been a dexterity festival. I would give this one to The Ball too. Reminds me of Meta-Ball ;)

I totally disagree. The Original Portal wasn't much of a puzzle and more of a tutorial. It was way too simple while Portal: Prelude was still not all that complicated it added the challenge that Valves game required. Though I suppose some ppl just over thought things.

No I'm sorry, Portal Prelude is infact really difficult for all the wrong reasons and gave absolutely no warning at being so. Prelude's difficulty, lack of presentation to this, campy storyline, author could all be forgiven but as a package, its really more or less a pack that fills a niche of elite players that pretends to be for everyone and those who don't get it are going to find themselves punched to the stomach. Its unfortunate that fixing one of these could have made it fit.

I detest Portal Prelude for its author being such a psychopath and the haphazard difficulty curve, the crude storyline, etc. It's an elitist mod, but since I was against Celestial Impact the first run in for the lack of 'je ne sais quios' in the first round, I'm guessing this one makes it to the top against my will. Even though Ball was more enjoyable and unique. I can't say much about the other two since I have yet to play them since I gave out my Far Cry copy and I never tested GFG yet.

Look over your comment, and rethink your accusations. I got through Portal Prelude just fine, and that's coming from a guy who needed a walkthrough for Portal itself. Plus, the only problems the storyline has is that it has been translated from French, and we all know how often problems arise from other languages being translated into English. I'm sure it works the same way going out of English, but, being one who only barely speaks a second language, I have no experience there.

klichka Feb 25 2009, 11:28pm replied:

I've looked at it again, and I'm right and many people agree that Portal Prelude has a lot of problems in the difficulty curve which is where its hurt the worst. It is really user unfriendly and gives no warning of that and then if I remember reading around the author was known to slam people who criticized his map pack. I made this speech before and my memory is hazy but basically: I could have forgiven quite a bit of it, the story I could have forgiven, the levels being too hard I could have forgiven, but as a package it just presents itself wrong, and combined with the figurehead of what many called a snobbish author, this really is not a favorite. A little presentation and a nicer author could have made me less of a detractor. I'm sorry I hurt your mod's feelings with my opinion that you rated down, despite trying to be nice in my discourse.

Come on, you're just as bad as those people who hate HL2 because Zero Punctuation called out its nonexistent repetition. I followed the mod from the start, and the only time the creator could have been called anything bad would be when someone sent in a particularly vehement complaint that was obviously founded on the basis of "I'm stupid and I can't play this mod, because I didn't finish Portal either."

I'll give you your opinions that the levels were a little hard, because obviously some people had a little trouble, but get your facts straight before you start insulting the creator.
