Darkness... My body hurts! Or is it my brain? The explosion! I remember it now. Maybe I'm in a coma? Or even worst, I may be already dead... Everything is so confusing... Zombies, monsters and ghosts from the past are filling my mind... Oh God, so many memories mixed with my dreams! I can't even distinguish them anymore. What if my entire life was just a nightmare? But it felt so real... Wait, what's that sweet voice? Sounds like a nurse! THAT is part of reality, I am sure. Now if I could just concentrate on this voice and try to wake up...

Horror has always been an area modders have explored in great detail over the years. In fact one of the first "big name" showcased mods, featured in PC Gamer and plenty of other places (back in the day when PC mags ruled the world) was They Hunger - a horror classic. Since They Hunger many horror themed mods have been released, some dark, some zombie based, some eerieely quiet and some edge of your seat "packed full of action".

So if you are prone to wetting your pants at the slightest scare these are probably not the titles for you. If however you crave something spooky this Halloween - sit back, dim the lights and enjoy ModDBs first ever mod countdown - as we take a look at the top 10 spookiest mods of all time as voted by our community.

Don't forget to watch this group for any more ModDB Mod Countdown's to come!

Check out Afraid Of Monsters DC and Mistake.
Those are two of the sickest mods ever to come out.
I have to confess; They had me SCREAMING at some points.

Paranoia is an AMAZING experience, it's really scary.
But the worst thing to do for the atmosphere is to add Metal
music to a fight scene. The team did well with all
the ambient in the beginning, but didn't realise that
fight scenes in horror games are best served with a hectic
Dark Ambient/Noise sticking needles in your ears and pumping
adrenaline in your veins.

Exactly half the people who say ZP:S isn't good or isn't scary haven't played or haven't played enough to actually experience. If you play with serious people (who are good) on good maps. Personally I think H:S is scarier.

One time I was playing on this new map, right. Holed up in this little glass observation room with nothing but a pistol and a few clips. A zombie jumps down and breaks the roof which scares the piss outta me but I manage to pop him. I think I am safe. I turn around to investigate a sound I heard and a zombie comes crashing through the window behind me. I was two floors up. By the time I was done panicking another one cut me off and I was done for. You have no idea how frantic I was. That's why I love ZP:S. Something scary happens, people freak, then laugh about it afterward.

Zombie Master isn't exactly scary unless you're playing a new map (btw, you picked terrible maps to play for the video), so it probably deserves the spot it got if we're talking about spookiness, but it's a great mod and much better than ZP:S imo. Plus it just got updated to 1.2.0 on friday!

Red Queen is not a terrible map. It's one of the few maps where there's actually objectives, and you don't spend the round cooped up in a house with your only objective being to survive for 10 minutes (that sounds like fun, but in reality it gets boring fast). If you're one of those people who just want to build barricades and shoot zombies the entire round, then ZM isn't the mod for you.

LCM Nov 3 2008, 10:47am replied:

Actually I think your thinking of ZP:S with the ten minute barricade camp with Zombie Master gather items/get to the end of the level game play is the most common as I have seen very few maps that are based upon camping and all of them only after you have gathered items done objectives their only common(without objectives) in ZP:S ..........

ZPS isn't really an overhyped mod, but it does fit into the horror category, and as henley said, it is a popular mod so all those who like it, voted for it. When it comes to the crunch, it's not scary in the slightest.

Personally, I think the hidden: source was the only mod that really could get me twitching with my mouse and I agree with Mr.Kadish, the sp in that was kinda scary, but unless you had a partner to go through the campaign with, it got really frustrating when you got down into the sewers and had to go do something to some electrical box or whatever it was.
So hands down for me it's the hidden: source.

Just wait for KF 2.51 :D. Hope some people have some great story maps in the making for the mapping contest. Really, people should have looked away from HL1 and HL2 altogether if they wanted scary mods, because they disregarded alot of good ones for mediocre ones.

I Still believe ZP:S is worthy of this section but ZM I still say no to.

I'm still HL2 = ZP:S, HL1 = Paranoia, UT2k4 = KF and UT3 = The Haunted

LoneWolf6:16 Nov 3 2008, 4:25am says:

The whole problem is people didn't vote for which mods were scariest, they voted for which mods they liked to play most. Too bad that wasn't the point of the poll.

For the life of me, I'll never understand how anyone can find a multiplayer game scary. How the heck can you be scared when you have potentially dozens of other people with you all shooting and chatting away? I think a lot of times people also confuse panic and excitement with fear. There are plenty of times in Zombie Panic: Source where you'll be the last survivor left, low on ammo, and have a swarm of zombies chasing you. That usually causes me to panic (in-game with the panic button and in real-life), but it doesn't terrify me or startle me so badly that I think I'm going to have a heart attack the way a good singleplayer experience can.

Of the 7 games on the list I've played (Hidden, They Hunger, AoM DC, ZPS, Ravenholm, Paranoia, ZM) Afraid of Monsters Director's Cut is without a doubt the scariest. The Haunted and Killing Floor look like a lot of fun, but way too much action to be scary. (And again, they're multiplayer) I've heard Dear Esther is very creepy, but to my understanding it's more or less an adventure game and as such you don't have things jumping out and actually threatening your life. I could be wrong, but most of the footage I've seen shows the player doing a lot of walking around and not much else. Personally, I need enemies to threaten me in order to be scared.

I agree completely with you, no multiplayer game, especially on the Source engine can be scary. Dear Esther is pretty much an interactive story and if you actually pay attention to the story you can get some goosebumps but that's it.

I'm sorry but I don't understand how multiplayer games are scary. I've played both Zombie Panic: Source and Zombie Master and they are far from being even remotely scary. Other mods like Afraid of Monsters, They Hunger, or Paranoia can be scary.
