The poll has now closed with the majority of people voting for 'info about atmosphere'.
Thanks again for the huge amount of votes from all of you!
Here's our info for you guys:
Radios added to main bases and overhaul of background ambience.

I quote Damjan Cvetkov-Dimitrov:
"I think MISERY needs to stay away from straight up music when you are not near humans or bases, but then when you are, local guitars, harmonicas etc would be that more effective emotionally. Misery needs desolation (musically speaking), which really adds to the reality factor if there is much less melody, and more ambient quiet sounds/music"

Adapt the modification of the "radio on the bases of" difficult, much more difficult to pick the right music. As You say that you need the sad music of the corresponding atmosphere of Your modifications, it's probably not quite right, just in sheltered places people have a rest and enjoy the life ( in the war, too, there are holidays) and to listen to the dismal, gloomy music not really want to. While You decide that correctly, and what is not. In addition I want to say that I talked yesterday with the author of the music for the game S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Vladimir Frey (Mooze) who has kindly provided a link to download their tracks and links to resources where you can listen and download some songs. Sorry for bad English.

I just realized radios would also be an awesome way for someone to be cautious. Like, remember when you have to access that crashed helicopter in the building, in the lower-right of the second area? That place is initially creepy all on its own, but what if you're wandering through the corridors where the documents are, right before that ambush, and you hear some muffled radio coming from a room? That's not something that would be there on its own--no, that's indicative of some living being having been around recently.

Those small things of suspense are what are really nifty about "horror" in games like these. And music can still be used thematically during "scenes," like when you find that basement full of those tentacle guys? Maybe just before that, there's a radio left in the room that either the hunter or you can activate, leaving a haunting, but apporpriate, song for creeping through. This one's debatable, as the atmosphere is somewhat good already without music... but think of it. The lack of humanity in the zone is amplified when ghosts of man echo in the halls...

I could use some feedback from Ukranian people:

Please tell me, if any of these bands are !NOT! played in the Ukraine nowadays: Gorky Park, Def Leppard, Mark Knopfler, Dire Straits, Pink Floyd, Neil Young, Johnny Cash, Bob Segar, The Proclaimers.

What I am looking for is the insight if any of these bands would be a fail to implement to our (already completed and implemented) Radio Mod.

Thanks in advance

I can say what music was popular in near the end USSR and early post-USSR time:
Victor Tsoi, Vladimir Vysotsky, "Mashina Vremeni" band, Igor Talkov, "DDT" band, Anna German, Muslim Magomaev, Bulat Okudzhava, Yuri Vizbor, Sergey Nikitin and Tatyana Nikitina, "Alisa" band, "Aria" band, "Piknik" band, etc...
Some of their songs really did fell deeply into souls of those who was born in USSR. Some of their songs are really soul shivering.

About Western music in USSR - Pink Floyd, Deep Purple, Dire Straits, Depeche Mode, Animals, Black Sabbath, Eric Clapton, Chris Rea, Queen, Beatles - those old dusty discs I found at home.

Hell yeah! More of Tsoi's "Kino" , "Akvarium" and "Chiz" ( Кино, Аквариум, Чиж ). All of them would fit the game's atmosphere perfectly. Here is some tracks:

Youtube.com ( yeah, you could hear it in some other mods, but still... This one is really great )

Youtube.com And that's the best one from Akvarium

Youtube.com Yeah, Tsoi again.

I know, I suggest very known groups, but I just couldn't answer :)
P.S. Btw I'm from Lithuania. It's also post-USSR country.
P.P.S Okudzava and Vysotsky should be played by guitar. Same with "Mashina Vremeni" Also you can look for soundtrack of pretty good russian film- "Brat 2". It also has a great list of post-soviet rock tracks. And sorry for my bad english.

The Soviet Union Collapsed? O.o

Oh yea my dear Hero and Leader of our great country Vladimir Putin said this once: "Whoever doesn't miss the Soviet Union has no heart, whoever wants it back has no brain."

And with that I conclude that old grievances must die so that new friendships may blossom and bloom anew.

Also, this is the kind of professionalism that we have all come to expect from the Misery team. Keep it up guys and hang in there, we are all rooting for you guys to deliver excellent quality. I have the utmost confidence that you will deliver a well polished and professional (free) product. ;)

Well, we do have an option to put in whatever radio tracks that we find fit for this mod concept. And there are tons of different ways to approach and argue for the tracklists.

Like hearing t.A.T.u. would be an option as well.
It wouldn't be a fail in terms of authenticism but would it fit?

Kyle_K_ski has suggested Brothers in Arms by Dire Straits Youtube.com and I personally think that it captures the right kind of depth and mood fit for a comforting Stalker base.

As in real life different people favor different kinds of music when resting in safe places. But personally I think that the majority of wounded, tired and quite possibly sick Zone men would like to have calm music playing as often as possible.

So although it would be fit to have energized rock music playing from time to time I do believe that there would be less tranquility to turn to in these bases if not peaceful music was the dominating radio music category.

Hey N.Aaroe, just out of interest, will there be any distortion/static effects - especially during blowouts? Would be a really nice touch to this addition. :)

I agree, that would be quite an immersive effect. But Blowouts and radio music are composed in two very different ways in gamedata and I find it that to believe that a manageable link between them could be established.

Well, the AI is triggered in some way that there is an emission, why not have the same trigger happen to entities, shut the sound they are playing off and replace it with a copy of massive static and eventual power loss, followed up by a fade-in sound effect to the music that was playing?

Should be doable somehow.

This sounds like a really good idea. Also imagine talking to Beard and then all of a sudden all the lights start to flicker or shut off, and any music, like you said, is replaced by a static sound. If this happened when an emission occurs, it would add immersion and realism. Would like this to get implemented somehow.

I could make generic interference sounds that are the same frequency as the radio songs ( i suppose the songs would have some minimal radio sounding effect over them already) and if its just a matter of trigger, when there is a blowout, at random times these interferences could play, and because they happen only where there is radios and bases, it would seem that the blowout interferes with the music, when in fact they are just ambient sounds triggered by location and by blowout.

Maybe I worded that wrong. I don't mean UVB-76 in itself is scary, in fact it's rather boring... I listened to it for an hour yesterday and got literally nothing, but finding a radio playing it in an abandoned base somewhere would add to the atmosphere of the game in my opinion. Especially if it lapsed into active transmissions every now and then.

I think it fits more if somebody going to create the crypted secret storage system. You go to one place in specific time, turn on your radio, suddenly you receive the code and coordinates of secret weapon/equipment dump in your hands.

I would **** my pants if suddenly I heard cries, woman screams, chewing, quiet roaring in the radio...

The idea of having two completely different ambients is great. I really liked how the Stalkers would sometimes play on their guitars or mouth harmonicas. Are you guys planning on adding more songs for the Stalkers that play the guitar? If so,this one would do just fine. It's from the game Metro 2033 and it's rather sad. Youtube.com

Description

RADIOS
All main bases have radios playing real life music to create a welcoming and motivating atmosphere. The range of tracks have been hand picked and stiched together to ensure an immersive and authentic soviet soundscape with real life bands of today.
A few tracks are added as surprise tribute to the original soul of our beloved S.T.A.K.E.R. origin.

AMBIENCE
A unique ambient musical score is being composed by Damjan Cvetkov-Dimitrov Moddb.com exclusively for MISERY 2.0.
His ambience compositions would hardly be categorized as actual music but rather atmospheric tones and vibes that grasp the very essence of everything that Stalker represents: loneliness, sorrow, danger, sadness, darkness, philosophy, curiosity and hope.
In addition he is designing a range of new atmospheric sound effects that fit right into the ambitions and concept of the MISERY mod.
