just wondering, why have you showcased these awesome models with different colors. Is it team color variants or something to do with the mod.
by the way, I don't know if I have said this before but I like the fact you are redoing all of the models and textures, looking at what you have been doing over the past few months has been really inspiring :) I am really looking forward to this mod coming out :)
No, I just thought I would change the slate gray of the Empire to something more flamboyant. I think rainbow suits them better ;)
Lol. Yes, it's just showcasing the fact that all my models will show team colors in skirmish. Many modelers do not include team colors with their models...so I make a point to do that. Obviously the default color will be black for the TIE variants :)
I'm glad you feel inspired and are excited for the release though. I do feel like I'm on a good kick right now and I'm teaching myself new ways to texture that are really making these models look so much better than their predecessors. It's fun on my end to push this game just a little further...just when I thought it had reached it's potential :)
Well, as usual you're doing an amazing job of that. I'm wondering, you said many modellers don't include team colours, I don't because I feel it takes away from the "reality" of how a ship looks, and that you make a point of doing it. Could you explain why? I'm interested to hear.
Team colors can detract from the 'reality' or 'immersion' of the experience for sure! We certainly agree on that and I think most games overdo it (the original EaW did, in any case...the entire wing looks silly as the team color).
However, it does become a tad bit difficult to differentiate your ships from your ally's without being able to see what belongs to who at a glance. The way I figure, if you keep the team colors modest (no neon or team colors that cover the entire unit) then you can reach that compromise between both worlds and player preferences. In the end though, it really is just player preference. There's no right or wrong, just different lines of thought.
To the players that really want a more realistic experience though, I did include white and black colors so that Imperials can retain most of their 'cannon' look whilst still being easily differentiated.
Good point, gameplay before realism. Maybe an idea, make the alpha of the unit texture on the parts where you want the team colours not entirely white, meaning the texture retains lets say half of the original colour while gaining a slight tint of the team colour. Including "scourge marks" like you did on the x-wing team colour might also be an idea to keep it as immersive as possible while keeping the colours. That's just my 5 cents though.
And I completely agree with all your points :) Solid team colors look bad. You have to integrate them into the rest of the texture. The only reason its not as much this way on the TIE is because if you reduce the alpha when its over black, it becomes a different shade of whatever team color its supposed to be...it doesn't look correct. However, I could adjust it to look like it was simply painted over the black...add chipped areas and so forth, as if the color were a squadron paint job or something (like the 181st has their red paint stripe).
Bigger ships are coming, don't worry! It's just that they are a LOT more work and I'm wanting to try some new stuff with them that requires testing... And as with all things, if I'm going to do it, I'm going to do it right...with death clones, hardpoint breakoffs and damage decals/particles. No half-assing!
Smaller ships are pretty straightforward so I can pump them out in the mean time.
Honestly I think having different colors on Tie fighters is not the best idea, the variation of colors works great on rebel starships because it gives it that rugged/unique look that rebel pilots would paint on their ships. But you can't say the same for the Empire, these pilots are clones, uniformity is key as an imperial tie fighter pilot life expectancy is short they dont really like to color up their wings and show off. They like to move as a indistinguishable swarm.

But Imperial grey is the most fitting colour! If you want something flamboyant, the pre - Hyperspace War Sith Empire is for you.
Beautiful...
looks incredible
looks nice, can't wait for next release.
Looks very impressive. I would love to see an ISD made by you ;)

Thank you everyone!
Farseer, you should release the smaller ships as an update, a teaser of sorts, of whats to come!
Even the most mundane fighter becomes something awesome.
Lordy! Lordy! Those TIEs look amazing.
