Discover one of the most beautiful but also most hostile environments in the world, Africa. You are sent to this war-torn region to assassinate the Jackal, a mysterious arms dealer who has rekindled conflict between local warlords, jeopardizing thousands of lives.

In order to fulfill your mission you will have to become a gun for hire, trapped in a war-torn African state stricken with malaria, and forced to make deals with corrupt warlords on both sides of the conflict in order to make this country your home.

Play the warring factions against each other, identify and exploit their weaknesses, and neutralize their superior numbers with surprise, subversion, cunning and, of course, brute force.

Far Cry 2: Realism+ Redux

Return to the Heart of Darkness

Far Cry 2: Realism+Redux

Realism+ Redux is a crossover of the Realism+ and Redux mods for Far Cry 2, and features some of the best features of both to provide a fresh and exciting gameplay experience.

Almost every aspect of the game has been tweaked or enhanced, and both BigTinz and I would love to go over some of the most significant features which we’ve included in this new modding project.

As of our latest version, there are now different downloads available which allow you to choose to have the player's position on the map, to restore the game's original colours, and shorten the taxi ride at the start of the game.

Graphics

Far Cry 2 is without doubt a game of its era. While the plains and jungles of Africa are well-realised and a true sight to behold, the original game’s presentation is covered in late 2000’s classic brown, and comes with a short draw distance alongside distracting LOD and shadow deficiencies.

Realism+ Redux addresses this by first boosting the game’s saturation to bring out some lively colour. This is done by simply removing the desaturation values, so what you see is the game’s assets with their original colours. On top of that the game’s overall graphics are pushed as far as the engine will allow, with improved draw distance, LOD values and shadows. New textures have also been added, with AI-enhanced versions used alongside some which are newly created.

All the screenshots used in this article are straight out of the mod, and the GIF below gives a comparison.

The game’s UI has also received a facelift, again with AI-enhanced textures used with newly created artwork for weapon and map icons. There is a comparison below showing some of these changes.

Gameplay

Our most exciting new feature is a fix for the annoying outposts, which are infamous for respawning as soon as the player leaves the immediate area. The talented Scubrah has written a newscript where once all the enemies in an outpost have been killed they will only respawn once half an hour real-time has passed. We are so pleased to finally have a solution to this absolutely renowned issue with Far Cry 2, and very grateful to Scubrah for letting us adapt his mod for Realism+ Redux. This feature is demonstrated in the video below.

The next most significant change is an overhaul for weapons and combat. The original game had bullet-spongey enemies, with pistols and shotguns being particularly ineffective.

Realism+ Redux gives an overall boost to player and enemy damage, which immediately makes combat deadlier and more impactful. This has been balanced around two new difficulties ‘Hardcore Redux’ and ‘Infamous Redux’. Both have increases for weapons’ max ammo, ‘Hardcore Infamous’ has the same combat difficulty as the original Infamous difficulty, and ‘Infamous Redux’ is a new, more difficult experience fit for experienced players. In addition to this each class of weapons has been re-balanced to try and make them all equally viable - no more pathetic shotguns!

There are a lot of overall changes to gameplay, too many to completely list here, but these include the removal of the player arrow from the map for more immersive exploration, infighting between enemy factions, expanded arsenals for enemies and buddies, a reorganized shop, new upgrades for DLC weapons and vehicles, faster vehicles, new vehicles for enemy patrols, improved hang gliders, improved stealth, less sluggish player movement, controls tweaks, and a whole lot more. Come and check out the mod description for all the details.

Playable Characters

One aspect we are particularly proud of are the new options for playable characters. We have added the female mercenaries to the playable roster, and also the option to play as an ‘Anonymous Mercenary’ where a player model is randomly generated using the same system which generates enemy fighters. Having a more diverse choice of people to play as is really nice to have, and you can see some of the results of being an ‘Anonymous Mercenary’ below.

Bug Fixes

If you’ve played Far Cry 2 before you may be well acquainted with things like weirdly bouncing npcs, getting soft locked through being unable to rescue buddies, silent phone calls, and a whole host of other weirdness.

We’ve gone to great lengths to fix as many of these issues as possible, and while it’s not 100% bug free (seriously, don’t use DX10), we are confident in providing a stable Far Cry 2 experience.

Thanks and Links

Realism+ Redux has been possible thanks to the now more than a decade old Far Cry 2 modding community, and we’d particularly like to thank Scubrah for their awesome outpost respawn script, and FoxAhead for their ever so reliable Multi-Fixer project.

If you’re interested in downloading the mod or learning more about the features then please come and check out our mod page here.

We’re more than happy to answer any questions and help out if you have any difficulties. The install is practically drag-and-drop, so it’s really quite simple.

And as a side note, Realism+ Redux is completely Steam Deck compatible! We have an 'Official' control scheme availaible in Community Layouts.

FC2 has terrible modding tech. Like you have to hard replace your native data with whatever the modder gives you. Sounds like a perfect way to replicate a digital HIV.

It's makeshift modding. The game was never intended to be modded because Ubisoft hates modders, and thinks all PC players are pirates.

That said, FC2 modding is in the best shape ever.

If you don't want to use existing mods, make your own. Boggalog wrote an amazing guide - Docs.google.com

Far Cry, 2, 3 and 5 are the only good titles in this series in my opinion. The rest feel like coat of paints or expansion packs.

I think Far Cry 4 (and Primal) is pretty good too IMO, like sure it doesn't really add much new stuff compared to FC3, but it improves on the gameplay and pushes the gamer forward to complete it all, in comparison to 2 and 3 it's more of a sandbox experience with it having more freedom and options.

Far Cry 5 I think has the best gameplay (the only con being the removal/toning down of the hunting aspect that 3 introduced and 4 significantly improved upon), however the only few things wrong with it that stop me from ranking it as the best of the series IMO is the terrible ending (makes it all fell like that your work was for nothing, no matter which one of the two you choose) and AWFUL resistance meter + hunting party feature that forced you to play through the main story missions.

That is like half the franchise, which is not bad. Some people also say 'Blood Dragon' is pretty good. Myself, I do not know, I have only played the original and the sequel so far.

There is something bliss inspiring in this game. It must be the African landscape, the lighting, the physics and the fluency of motion, the viscerality of combat, the outstanding ambiance and the sounding. Even though one could argue the game plays like a song on repeat, having no real progress to offer outside of gun purchases, next to a blurry narrative picture delivered in monologues, journals, environmental storytelling and clues of such, it feels good as an action game, for an action game it is, the 'Far Cry 2'. It does feel like a movie clip played on constant replay but it does feel good to watch it, even to be there to a reasonable extent, figuratively speaking. It may not be the best game ever created but certainly it is one of the most important games for me personally. I also do like the original 'Far Cry' with the Okinawan vibe it does bear, but Africa is something different. Thanks to perk of diamond hunting, the world in 'Far Cry 2' appears more of a place to discover, rather than only cruise through. Thanks to 'Far Cry 2' I do think about Africa more often.

I would say, get your daily dose of vitamin D3 and do your cardio, your playthrough should feel more wholesome now, but it is a niche gamer joke, y'know. I am not a doctor.

Given how the newer Far Cry games (post 3 & 4) have turned out (quality and content wise), it makes me appreciate this much more.

If only it were possible to mod this further by adding new content. :<

I wish it was possible to modify Far Cry 2 to the point where entirely new content could be added in, like new weapons, new vehicles, new NPCs, new animals (especially THIS considering Africa is well known for its dangerous animals), new maps, new mission types, etc. :\

Perhaps 'Dune' would do with what the 'FC2' engine is good for.

It would be amazing if someone make a zombies mod for the game where Africa is swimming in ocean of zombies and you get to survive (kinda make it like The Walking Dead Survival Instinct) also Multiplayer bots mod would be more than awesome and if someone could unlock the open ended ending for the game and make it openworld-like element by letting the player free roam with no missions after beating the game that would be also great and if u ask me why do I want to free roam after beating the game it's because I want to collect all diamons and buy all weapons and do all that kind of stuff around the map like DLC missions and quests but meh all that is useless if you know the game would end like that, i am just saying you know

Yeah sorry but no, honestly we already have enough games and mods with zombies in them, I know there are plenty of good if not great zombie games and mods, but the general majority of them are pretty unimaginative, cliché, and boring in my honest opinion.

It'd honestly be more interesting to see a modification for FC2 based off the book A Plague of Demons, where the protagonist is in war torn North Africa fighting against wolf-like aliens that are harvesting the brains of dead soldiers to use for an army of robots they're building to fight in interstellar wars.

This may sound silly, but I think it's a pretty good book (a friend of mine gifted it to me for my BDay this year, and I've read all of it twice), I feel like this book may have also been one of the inspirations for the original Doom.
