Will freedom be crushed under the heels of Communist aggression. Red Alert 2 is another Real Time Strategy from Westwood the makers of the brilliant Command and Conquer series. This is one of the few RTS that really was modded heavily, and not just limited to new maps and or player models.

A frequently asked question is why there is no Tiberian Sun or Red Alert 2 mod. The short answer: the engine does not support it yet. The long answer: you can already try and convert the file formats to add infantry and buildings. So what is needed for native support without conversions:
3D terrain and Isometry
This is currently not supported, but not as far fetched as one might think. We recently stumpled upon CnCMaps.Net which turned out to be re-factored OpenRA code to render high-quality map previews.
SHP Format changes
The file formats for infantry/buildings changed since Tiberian Sun, but it is already reverse engineered. In fact the SHP Viewer is built upon OpenRA and supports them.
Voxel support
The biggest addition to the engine by Westwood since Tiberian Sun is Voxel support. All vehicles are in fact 3D models although the games still had a static camera and the look and feel was still very much like that of sprite-only era. Paul started hacking on OpenRA again and presented some experimental voxel support a few days ago.
Tiberian Sun
Tiberian Sun ships a bunch of partly broken C&C/RA1 units in voxel form. Westwood probably used them for early engine tests as well.

Is there anywhere I can pick this game up cheaply. I loved this game when I was younger but can't find where to buy it. I never knew about mods back then either.
You can download it through torrent, there are still torrents for this game which are functional and have good seeders :)
I bought the C&C ultimate collection from origin. I tried to add game shortcut to desura for every components,e.g., Red alert 2, C&C 3. I have to manually fix the installation location by poting to origingame folder. Even after these efforts, I still cannot lauch the games from Desura. the origin shows up but after that nothing happens. Does that mean I actually cannot use those great mods for the games?

if westwood was still around, they would make the best C&C games even better then generals, tiberium. lets hope generals 2 will b something good

1- when i install any mod and i come to play on network or lan , the game become crash and i cant play with mods , and i downloaded that file called wsock32.dll , that let u play on lan smoothly and play lan with mods but i cant play with mods
