I would say "possibly yes". Usually I don't get a game just for one mod but there can be exceptions if the mod really is a blast... especially if the games can be obtained from a bargain bin.
when me and my mates where like 10 - 12 we used to sit down and modifie the monsters to hate each others and mod there ablitys. then make a simple battle ground and make them fight to the death :)
I got BF2 for a lot of great mods, same goes for Unreal Tournament 2004. I often don't buy games at release, because there are no mods for them. Once I see mods, e.g. for Crysis getting ready, I'll definately be buying Crysis.
So yeah - I JUST buy the games for the mods and often don't even play the original game at all.
Yeah, buying old games to play mods is good. The games are usually pretty cheap and being able to play the associated mods makes it well worth the price. Recently we got Battlefield 2 so we would be able to play Forgotten Hope 2. Next it looks like we're going to have to get a copy of Deus Ex so that we will be able to play The Nameless Mod when it releases in January (and you should too!)
I've never bought old games for mods, but I have bought older games, I actually bought Deus Ex in a pack without knowing anything about it, but it's my favourite game now.
Voted no, but on second thought I bought Postal 2 Share the Pain about two years ago just for a mod. However, I already had the regular version of Postal 2, but if I hadn't had that, I would've bought Postal 2 Share the Pain for the mod and the game itself instead of just for the mod. Hope that made sense. :P If a certain Max Payne 1 mod ever gets finished I plan on buying that game just for the mod.
buying a game... just to play a mod for it???? o_O well, i wont say its total rubbish, since it seems a lot of people waste their money doing this (but it really is :P).
i'll buy any game as long as I think its interesting and good enough to give it some play time, mods are not in my list of things to check when buying a game, and basing buying said game entirely on what mods it has is, imo, quite foolish.
have never bought a game just to play a mod, most mods are just a bit of eye candy to keep you form getting board imo, save for some of the big ones like Metastasis and Black Mesa:S.
Games like UT3 (and UTK4/UT1 [screw UT2K3]), Crysis, and even Quake 3/4 were made for their modding engines. You can play the game itself yes but really it comes down to a moddable engine released to the public. Monster Madness advertised "COMES WITH THE UNREAL 3 ENGINE EDITOR", so why do you think people bought that game? Not many got it for MONSTER MADNESS that's for sure.
If you buying games such as the ones listed above to JUST play them then your missing out on more then 99 % of the content therein which imo, is a waste of your money. :D
If a mod looks really good for an old game I don't have, I'll seriously consider picking said game up, especially if it's cheap.
Same here, I found unreal 2k4 for $10 and considering all the mods UT2004 has I'd say it was a very nice deal, if you haven't already got it.
I second that. I'm still thinking about picking Half-Life up, some nice mods for it. Great game itself too though.
Might do that too, but the answer is still "No"... the poll says "have you" and it's "no, I have not".
I love breathing life into older games...
Just wish I had more time to play...
yeah, the last one was doom 3.
Well, I also bought it later, but not to play a mod, but rather to make a mod for it. So my answer was 'No'.
Aye same here cost only 30 bucks for both it and the expansion.
Most of the mods I want to play I already own the game for. HL, HL2, Doom3, Quake4, Diablo2... Yeah...so no, I really haven't.
I got some of the old Unreal tournament games just to play the mods, I don't actually like the gameplay in plain unreal tournament.
I buy Old games regardless, although I got back into GTA:SA just for mods.
ditto. If I see a great deal in a store I pick it up. IE NOLF 2 for $5, Doom 1+2+Ultimate+final for $10, etc.
older games were when software house`s cared about what they released now they just shove it out and you fix it with patch`s so long live mods.
im going to buy doom 3 soon, because of the dark mod.
Works with the Steam version :D
I would say "possibly yes". Usually I don't get a game just for one mod but there can be exceptions if the mod really is a blast... especially if the games can be obtained from a bargain bin.
I did but only ever for the original HL mods like CS and TFC.
Now however theres tooo many crap mods.
Of course..!!
I also found Deus EX for 99p the other day :O
2-5 years.
Battlefield 2142 for First Strike.
nEVER DONE IT BUT i WOULD.
I bought Wolf3D to play trench warfare, it was worth it ;)
Half-Life 1 for Natural Selection
CS:S for Smod:Tactical
And Doom 3 For the Doom Classic mod, it's nearly better than the original Doom 3.
i've bought bf1942 a year ago for the mod fh
Half-Life for Temporal Cold War. Still waiting for it. :D
Nope, but i will Buy Crysis when MechWarriors Living Legends comes.
i think it's already in the $10 & under category, I'd snatch it now before you're stuck with online only purchases that cost more.
I never have any money to buy games
I've purchased games that are 10 years old for some mods.
UT and HALFLIFE mods are some of the best going.
and also... dont forget the good old unreal1
when me and my mates where like 10 - 12 we used to sit down and modifie the monsters to hate each others and mod there ablitys. then make a simple battle ground and make them fight to the death :)
soooooooo many hours :)
bought half life, for paranoia.... it was so worth it! and since have played many other mods for hl.
I purchased old 1-5 years games old because they seemed fun, not necessarily to try mod.
I have never done it but I could buy Far Cry just to play The Delta Sector
I bought another HL1 just to play Sven Coop over steam. -So now i got 1 for the world and 1 for only LAN-games.
It doesn't matter for me how old a game is if i see and like a mod, The only thing the matter is how much money i have over...
Ditto.
Yea, i bought hl1 for brainbread lol

I'm going to buy CS:S for Insurgency and maybe I'll make a couple of maps too :D

I know what you mean....I bought Deus Ex in a fire sale for a couple o bucks and it was great

2-5 years for me. Unreal Tourney for that take on CS that I can't recall the name of.
Tactical Ops:Assault on Terror is what you are refering to.
Guess Half life 2 counts for me, I bought the Goty version in 2006 for a mod.
Old games ROCK......an mods of them are awsome.... YAY SVEN/AS/KF/etc
UT2004 for Killing Floor and all those other klew mods/mutators.
buying a game... just to play a mod for it???? o_O well, i wont say its total rubbish, since it seems a lot of people waste their money doing this (but it really is :P).

Are you kidding?

Communities make games great. End of story.
