Todesangst

Todesangst (pronounced TOH-dess-ahngst) is a German word that literaly means fear of death, but is usually translated as meaning terror or dread. Todesangst introduces the new sinister character Dr. Jack Newell, expert chaos theory mathematician and Director of Black Mesa R&D. Gordon Freeman and Dr. Newell have always had an adversarial relationship at best, and Gordon's hero status following the containment of Xen only served to inflame Dr. Newell's hatred and jealousy of him.
The timeframe for Todesangst is set shortly after Gordon Freeman's successful return from Xen. The episode opens with a cut-scene of Mr. Blackstone (a.k.a. the G-man) arriving at Dr. Newell's office. As we soon discover, Dr. Newell has had Mr. Blackstone in his control all along, and has his own intentions for the exploitation of Xen's biological uniqueness. . .
Its up to you, Gordon, to stop your evil colleague from unleashing the horror of Xen on humanity. . . if its not too late. . .

Todesangst is one of those more unique mods, not in the environements or content, but merely in it's approach to gameplay.
First off there are cutscenes that do little to enhance the game, Valve has it right where taking you out of character to see something else is usually a bad way to tell a story in a game, because it takes you out of the action.
It feels more like a 3rd person novel or movie.
I would say especially in this case where it doesn't tell you anything that needs to be known and is quite drawn out, with mediocre voice acting to boot.
One weird thing is Gman' fate which was quite laughable. If the mod attempted a storyline it can be non-existent & would have made no difference.
The mods uniqueness mostly comes into the gameplay. It has little focus on combat, instead relies more getting you through many different kinds of environments, water pumping stations, outside area, adminstration, water canal, exhibits, & traverse through different vents to get into new areas.
I would say vent crawling is done well here, because you do it logically whenever it seems like there isn't a clear way out and feel like you're making progress as you discover these new areas.
Whenever there is combat you merely fight a few zombies at first, before meeting grunts, usually one at a time. The grunt fights are by and large minor compared to the Xenomorph you encounter. A storyline explains they are humans transformed into genetic hybrids of human and xenian.
They are exactly like Alien Slaves gameplay wise but have a different skin. Whats interesting here is the morality question it poses as to whether you should kill them even though they where once human.
There are a fair bit of them but I managed to get passed them all without killing any.
There is one setpice of note with the Apache and the anti-aircraft tank which is the only difficulty part of the mod aside from the ending where you take on aliens with a crowbar.
They where some lacking parts, like when you break out of your sleeping quarters you can't break into the other 2 rooms eventhough they have the same weak wooden doors... When you get knocked out and placed inside of a containment pod there didn't seem like any possible way the grunts could knock you out... like it was just thrown in there... way to forced.
The level design was good in some areas but mostly hallways intercut all of these areas, which added to the longevity of the mod and not much else.
Oh yes I did like the death trap. Should have seen that coming.
Short, but awesome mod. Loved the twist to the story. Detailed environment. Definitely recommended to Half-Life lovers.
*The ending had me smile and chuckle.* :)
