Welcome to the 8th Annual Mod of the Year Awards - the premiere event that celebrates the best creations within the modding and indie gaming scene. Developers have delivered plenty of great gameplay experiences this year, and now it is our turn as gamers to nominate and recognize the best of 2009.

From now until Feb 20th, we shall be sharing a year in review and showcasing the editors' picks of 2009, culminating in the announcement of this year's best mod and game as voted by you. The top mods and games will win the honors of being placed alongside other projects that have gone on to become commercial successes and cement their place in ModDB's hall of fame. And to the winner goes the spoils; ModDB has teamed up with a whole lineup of sponsors that have provided prizes ranging from software to servers to beanbags. Everything to help budding developers excel at their craft.

Introducing the 8th annual Mod of the Year Awards, a huge celebration of modding and indie development culture!

Posted by Henley on Dec 21st, 2009

For the past eight years ModDB has celebrated modding culture in style with the always popular Mod of the Year Awards. Developers, gamers and enthusiasts come together to vote of their favorite mods and indie games, giving something back to the developers who created the experience they enjoyed so much. ModDB, with its heavy focus on community leaves it in your hands to select the winners, and for the past 7 years you have not disappointed with some great titles taking out the grand prize.

With the latest spot in the Hall of Fame and a couple of prizes up for grabs, mod and indie game developers have a lot to compete for. This year the MOTY awards will follow a similar pattern to the very successful 2008 event with 5000+ candidates being widdled down to the final few over the course of 30 days (15 days for phase 1 and 2). To help you get your project noticed, we have put together some promotional tools which you are free to post on your website, as you encourage your fans to vote.

Whether you're new to the community or a long time member, voting for your top choices of the year is easy. Both members and non-members of ModDB can vote by navigating to a mod or indie game's profile and clicking the vote button located just underneath the summary section (see below). Member votes are more valued so be sure to register if you want your voice to be heard! While you're at it, have a look at some of the other mods on the site, there's an endless amount of free entertainment to be had on a variety of game engines, platforms and genres.

From all the staff here at ModDB, we wish all entrants the best of luck and thank you for creating new gameplay experiences that entertain gamers all over the world. For full details on voting and contest rules, check out the 2009 Mod of the Year profile. Keep on modding!

Thought the same, looking forward what wins this year's mod of the year.
I'm willing to bet Research&Development is gonna get a fairly high spot at the very least.

My hopes are for Jailbreak:Source winning even though 0.6 hasn't released... if it were released it would have a high chance imo, either way one of my votes goes to Jailbreak:Source!

Good luck everyone, and thank you for providing our excellent community with incredible mods that makes games that inch (or mile?) better.

Same question as every year: Standard Banners are 468x60px, 88x31px, a.s.o and none of the graphics inside the media section fits to produce one of them. This is an "online" voting. Please make some banners for online websites ^^

I'd love to see a mod for an old-school game win this year, something from the Command & Conquer series, maybe.
Good luck to my fellow mod leaders.

May the best REAL MOD win this year, instead of just a map... lol... Please make sure the rule changes reflect the injustice of last years results. Thanks. That said, best to all MODS in the running.

How do you vote for an upcoming mod? All I can see is a button to vote for best mod of the year?

Mod I'm trying to vote for: Moddb.com

INtense! Dec 21 2009, 5:31am replied:

That button works for both released and upcoming. You just need to press it to vote

+2 votes   reply to comment
DuckSauce Dec 21 2009, 5:34am replied:

Just click for that vote button then, there's no other way, if the mod is unreleased it will simply become a canditate for best unreleased regardless of what the button calls it.

Edit: Ninja'd by INtense!

Was it a great year for mods? Maybe. I tried playing as much as I could but got bored quickly. I think out of everything I played the Haunted performed best. Also, I'm amazed Killing Floor never won the title (too late now).
Good luck to all the mods! Will be nice to see a lot of trailers for what's to come. Diaspora (though indie game, idk if it still fits in the competition) should release an update. There are still a lot of BSG fanboys waiting for it - including myself ;)

sadly some mods like Korsakovia dont have an vote option, is it up to the authors to let thier mod nominatied moty or is it automaticly if the mod is released in 2009 then there is an option?

Great promo video - but I disagree with the notion that The Specialists "still has one of the best communities ever made." Are you kidding? It's practically dead, and most of what it is now is roleplaying. TS pretty much died like two years ago.
