Tech 5 is a next-generation engine from id Software. Used on their most recent title 'Rage' it has also been announced that it will be the technology behind the upcoming 'Doom 4'.

Upon announcing id Tech 5 one of the first features presented to the public was the inclusion of Virtual Texturing supporting textures with resolutions up to 128,000 x 128,000. This technique allows the engine to automatically stream textures into memory as needed, meaning that the developer need not concern themselves with memory restraints or texture limits. A stand-out feature of id Tech 5 to developers is it's resources for cross-platform development allowing both consoles and the PC audiences to take advantage of it.

Some other features of the id Tech 5 processing structure include:

  • Collision Detection
  • Animation Blend
  • Obstacle Avoidance
  • Transparency Processing
  • Cloth Simulation
  • Water Surface Simulation

About RAGE with 74 comments by feillyne on Feb 9th, 2013

Later today on Steam Bethesda and id Studio will be releasing the official tool kit for RAGE  – the same tools used to create RAGE and its DLC, The Scorchers. From the game’s world building tool, idStudio, to game maps and assets, the kit provides everything you need to get started with modding the first-ever idTech 5 title.Interested? Before you start downloading the hefty 35+ GB file, the RAGE team has provided some documents to read. As described in the welcome document, these tools provided are complex and aimed towards “technically sophisticated and adventurous” modders.

Welcome to the RAGE Tool Kit

RAGE Tool Kit FAQ and EULA

To download the kit itself, be on the lookout for the RAGE Tool Kit in the Tools section of Steam (the same place you’d download Skyrim’s Creation Kit). id Studio looks forward to seeing your creations. If you have something to share, shoot them an email or share it with their id Software Facebook and Twitter accounts.

The Idtech5 engine should be named StaticEngine, because all, from shadows to objects is static and fixed with glue in the 3d world, its a big disappointment and a step back from the awesome IdTech4 and IdTech3, but i hope they get again the in the correct way on Doom 4, i just want like Doom 3 but better and more wide spaces but dark and scary, very scary !!! :D

You're just as dumb here as you are in doom3world.

Everything was static in Rage, yes. Idtech 5 is a tool. Nothing you build with it has to be exactly like Rage.

Just like Crysis 2 doesn't look as nice as crysis 1, but cryengine 3 ***** all over cryengine 2 in every conceivable way.

Doom 4 To be able to get to success this time, will have to show far more than new graphics. From what I saw, we have great competitors. In Doom 3 where the climate is very dark and scary was very good. Now this concept needs to keep terror and add new features to be implemented in the game, as most players offer WHAT expect from Doom, A version totally gore, with mutilations (Improve gibs system), more realistic EFFECT blood, organs to every corner . (gibs system again). Imagine using that chainsaw mutilating zombies and demons in the game would be incredible.

Well this was for me the very basics that should have the game.
I found the rage very limited in some aspects.
