All the Halo games use the same engine but modified.

Basically, the more recent the game, the more up to date it is with more work and features.

As an fyi, almost every engine is like this.

Originally Halo was called "Monkey Nuts" but one of the devs couldn't tell his mother that, so they renamed it "Blam!" because when Bungie was in Chicago there were screeching tires outside the offices, but no crash sound, so someone would yell BLAM!!! I think one of the other working titles was Red Haze or something like that...
