Who cares how much is reused? I'd be happy if they reused everything if it led to more brilliance - which it has. You're really fooling yourself if you don't play Ep1 because it "doesn't have new bosses".

i can't get into team fortress. i dunno. i like day of defeat better. i am interested in portal, however. i've played narbuncular drop and enjoyed it.

i'm really getting it for E2. valve has yet to disappoint me with a HL game. HL isn't as "cerebral" as, say, deus ex or thief, but it's an excellent game. i actually am completely unable to figure out what makes it so damn special- aside from narrative style it's not much different from any other FPS.

well, never look a gift horse in the mouth i guess.

as far as HL2 goes, i disagree that it's much different from HL1. the theme is different, but the gameplay is much the same. if i had to pick one thing, just ONE thing, that i don't like about HL2, it'd be the NPCs following you around during the street war. i always feel bad when they get killed, and most of it is because i need someone to draw fire for me. there's a few long/tedious parts in HL2, but then again HL1 had some too. but the main point of HL2 is the same as HL1- set pieces to break up gameplay before travelling gets monotonous, with a given goal that you have to reach. i'll give you two examples.

HL1: the blast pit. you have to turn on the test rocket, but to do that you have to go turn on the gas and power, both of which are little mini-quests in their own right, with their own subtasks.
HL2: the bridge. you need to go across the bridge, but to do that, you've got to go under it to deactivate the force field. this is probably my favourite part of the whole game outside from anything involving zombies or nova prospekt.

episode 1 has quickly become my favourite HL game, finally knocking blue shift off the top spot. it basically takes the best parts of HL2, drops the boring bits, and condenses it all into a 4-6 hour romp.

look at it this way: sure, the game basically funnels you down a straight line, but it's not QUITE as obvious as, say, call of duty.

i like to think that valve learns from the industry as well as their customers as to what their customers like. HL2 doesn't FEEL as linear as HL1, and a lot of that is because it's much more open. HL1 had us in cramped, dark tunnels. HL2 has us going down highways by the coast. it's much more open-feeling. they also know we love vistas like the cliffs in HL1 (which is why they brought it back for lost coast) and the underside of the bridge, so they try to do big, risky stuff that forces us to stop and think about what we're doing and plan our every move. the way they've monitored how people have been playing E1 supposedly will teach them what to do or not to do next time. if you listen to the E1 commentary you'll notice there was a lot of debate and discussion on how to handle the player's motion and how to affect him personally with ingame events.

i thought i'd have more, but it's 4:30 in the morning and i need sleep.

Team Fortress 2 all the way! Frankly, I was never a huge Half-Life 2 fan myself...I think the games are still very good, but nkwhere near as fantastic as so many others find it.
Team Fortress, on the other hand...that is good stuff. I play ETF right now, and I love it, so I can't wait to see how Source runs Fortress. The significance is only diminished a bit by the fact that Fortress Forever looks quite impressive.

Portal should be cool, but I get the feeling it'll only be a few hours long and more of a tech demo than an actual game. I could be proven wrong, though...

I wonder the same thing. I'm not really buying into this "episodic" content. Episode 1 and 2 look like nothing more than level packs with some story tacked on, sold as a commercial product. I remember when the selling point for an expansion or (shareware) episode was how much new content besides levels you would be getting, such as bosses, textures, weapons, and enemies. Doesn't Ep1 use about 90% of content already found in Half-Life 2?

That's quite the strawman argument you have there. If by brilliance, you mean typical FPS action, then I would agree with you. I loved HL1, but HL2 feels so far removed from the original that I don't find myself enjoying it as much. Sure, HL1 had it's cinematic moments, but it wasn't just about that, or shoehorning new, but largely unnecessary features such as HDR, lip synch technology, and cinematic physics.

Valve had a one trick pony with HL1, and they're using its name to milk the franchise dry while simultaneously tooting their own horn as if they are the sole force of "brilliance" in the industry. I don't understand why so many people kiss their feet in admiration, and never question or grow tired of their practices. What is so special about HL2 and Valve that warrants this much attention? If anything, Valve is just the posterboy of the moment, as id was. And we all know what happened to id's popularity over the years.

sry about the double post but snarboo, the general play in hl2 is the same as hl1. In hl1, the goal wasn't killing everything, it was finding a way through to get to the next part. Thats largely what hl2 is about, except they included awesome graphics, awesome physics, and now awesome lighting. But they definitely added more, aside from physics, music, and hdr. For one, they created a different environment than hl1. Hl1 was in a beaten up underground hi tech lab. Hl2 is in the city and countryside. Hl2's plot flows much better as well, as everything makes much more since, there are road barricades, and you can go through and see the resistance battling the combine. My favorite addition is the 28 days later car+dark tunnel part. Now that was sweet, having to get the cars out of the way.

And they are a force of brilliance, maybe not the "sole" because of steam. There are so many games on it now, and a lot of them don't use the source engine. and they allow mods.

Should of been "I hate my HALF life. No." :)

Portal all the way man! But i won't be getting i unless they sell it sepertly for $10. I don't want Ep2 or TF2. Not at all. Blech!

why $10? Because if all three sell for ~$30 that's $10 each.

Sorry for the double poist, but for the record, I'm not trying to flame anyone or be so reactionary, I'm just sick of the endless hyperbole surrounding Half-Life 2 and Valve. They make good games, I admit, but not worthy of this much attention and praise, especially when so much of it is unwarranted. There are so many better games that will be ignored because of Half-Life 2.

Again, don't mean to be so jaded.

Ye probably mean "Valve releases another awesome piece of art and gameplay". I'd be happy to pay, what is it, a few ? more in total?, to play a new episode than wait another 3-4 years on hl3.

Face it, if Valve released a turd in a box, you'd buy it. You don't even question if Portal, TF2, or Ep2 are going to be fun, good, or any different than the millions of other chapters and versions of Half-Life they have and will release. Don't you find that a bit disconcerting? You immediately assume their next game is going to be an, and I quote, "awesome piece of art and gameplay." A bit much for a game that has you wacking aliens with a crowbar and a gun that literaly fires gravity, as a gimmick no less, don't you think?

That doesn't even come close to masterpieces of the scifi genre such as anything by Heinlein, Philip K ****, Stanislaw Lem or Asimov. Hell, it's not even a masterpiece in the genre of FPS games.

I don't necessarily consider a game that consists of (soon to be neverending, thanks to EPISODIC CONTENT(TM)) hours of gun play and sloppy storytelling wrapped up in a low rent version of 1984 a work of art, but hey, I'm obviously not like you. As long as that turd is $20 or less...

Enough with the hyperbole, please.

There is a reason people (including myself) like Valve games. They are good. They are not just mindless shooting or jumping puzzles or key pass searches. They include interesting story and make the characters have character.

Also I don't know how anyone could think Valve is just popping out games to ride the wave of HL1's or HL2's popularity. You must have forgotten that they took the time to make Source. If they had planned tojust make a lot of money they would have wrapped some crap in a shinny box and sold it. But they didn't, they made quality games that people enjoy playing.

I admit that some of their concepts never made their games. The Hydra in HL2 for example. That's what happens when games get displayed when still WIPs.

Snarboo is so right in some ways, really irritates me that ep.1 could not have been the last chapter of HL2. But these days Valve would rather milk then make a masterpiece. That?s why going multi console and joining partnership with EA is an excellent move in their opinion. I think HL2 ep.2 is hot anyway, because Valve still makes brilliant stuff even if it is small stupid episodes. I?m very much looking forward to TF2 and Portal as well, I?m really curious to have Portal is going to enter Half-Life in the future.

sorry for the double post, but in response to Snarboo

Honestly, i would rather take things in Episodes, then wait another 6months to a year for them to release the next part of HL2. its been 3 months since ep1 came out, and we already have the next chapter to look forward too. also, episodic content is allowing more advancements with the source engine to be shown. all the little advancements of the source engine would have taken forever to be released if it wasnt for the episodic release. I for one enjoy the way Valve is releasing the next part of HL2, because its fairly quick and shows the development of the engine.

Assuming this is for the second HL2 expansion pack, then no. The first one really didn't imress me, even though HL2 did. Kind of like Doom 3 and its expansion. TF2 is just TFC with a new graphical style, there really isn't anything to improve about Team Fortress without significantly altering the gameplay.

When TF2 was first announced it looked awesome, but since every cool feature it promised has already been done in different games, it no longer is interesting.

And I don't really know what portal is, but since everyone seems so excited about it I'll try it when its released, since its only one of those 3 that might be original content.

Theres a lot more innovative and interesting games coming out this year that aren't sequels and re-hashes of old titles.
