New hotfix for the mod has been released! Reuploaded with a crash fix on the 17th March 2024 This hotfix requires the previous version, and it naturally also requires the vanilla TES TW mod. To read install instructions below, CLICK read more
Unofficial Patch 2.0.5. for The Elder Scrolls
17th March 2024 - REUPLOADED WITH MAJOR CRASH FIX AND NEW VERSION OF EOP!
(Compatible with your old saves)
- Simply extract into your The_Elder_Scrolls folder (repeat installation step 4)
- Improvement to my poorly optimized Oblivion gate lua script, which was likely overloading the game memory, as well as other lua scripts optimization. Also added other game settings that should reduce memory overload --> Crashes should now be significantly reduced!
- Fixed the little bug, when Martin Septim was not killed after the battle for Imperial City.
- Upgrade to new version of Engine Overhaul Project 3.1, which should further help with optimization
- Thus, you can use new abilities and settings provided by the tool, such as the ability to view battle tactical map for any tile on the map! (press middle mouse button on map) and many more.
- Furthermore, you can also try to use new test settings that you can enable in EOP menu, such as the ability to plan escape route (under hotseat settings, also activated by middle mouse button).
- You could also try to enable DXVK rendering mode in EOP menu. Potentially, this could massively improve game performance for you!
- For other great content originally part of this hotfix (such as new Vvardenfell custom map!), please scroll further down.
- Please, let me know whether this new hotfix helped you reduce crashes or not! Dont forget about trying to use other anti crash tips listed below in this thread (such as compability settings) in case you still have many crashes. And in case you test the EOP DXVK settings, which should improve performance, please also let me know.
- HOTFIX -
Install instructions
It is possible to run the mod only by using M2TWEOP GUI launcher!
0. If you have a previous version of this patch or the main mod, i.e., 2.0 or 2.0.3., you need to delete it first and start over.
1. Download and install The Elder Scrolls 2.0.2 Standalone. Of course, you need to apply 4GB patch or LAA patch as well, its located in your TES folder.
2. Go into your The_Elder_Scrolls/data and delete the whole "world" folder"! Otherwise your start campaign menu will be all messed up.
3. Download and install TES Unofficial Patch 2.0.4. (this) by extracting it into your mods folder. You will know you are doing it correctly when it asks you to overwrite files, hit yes.
4. Download and install this hotfix (TES Unofficial Patch 2.0.5. Hotfix) by extracting it into your The_Elder_Scrolls folder. You will know you are doing it correctly when it asks you to overwrite files, hit yes. (If you are reinstalling with the new crash fix hotseat, you only need to repeat this step 2.0.5, not required to resintall the main mod. Your old saves will remain compatible)
5. You are ready to play!
To launch, use the M2TWEOP GUI.exe! The usual launchers will not work.
Engine Overhaul Project (EOP) is now enabled by default (unlike before, as the new version has no antivirus issues, runs smoothly, and so on). It allows many features impossible in Medieval 2 otherwise, such as alchemy crafting and Oblivion Gate travel (see more in the changelog below)
If you are having issues, such as being unable to launch or having frequent crashes, scroll to the bottom of this thread, there are several tips that will surely help you You should be definitely able to run the version with no issues, hence if ther are frequent crashes and similar issues, its likely on your end, see the tip below.
In the last version, there also appeared an issue with crashing saves that we made a few dozens turns after a campaign start. To avoid the saves getting corrupted, I disabled autosave function, which should presumably fix this. Therefore, it is not recommended for you to re enable autoasaves. Instead rather just make more saves of your own.
Changelog - 2.0.5 HOTFIX
Vvardenfell Provincial Campaign!
- A new custom campaign with a highly detailed map of Vvardenfell added. Take the opportunity to experience Vvardenfell island during the events of TES III: Morrowind!
- You can take command of one of the 8 playable factions (dunmers, ashlanders, imperials, ash vampires and undead/vampires) across 70 regions.
- The provincial campaign also includes all other events and features from the global campaigns relevant to Vvardenfell.
- Some characters start off Vvardenfell (Helseth, Almalexia, Sotha-Sil...) but may be brought to the island.
Various bugfixes and minor features
- The serious issue with corrupted saves from late in campaign is now hopefully fixed by disabling the autosaves (do not re enable it).
- (Hopefully?) removed the trigger of crashes during Oblivion Crisis for some people.
- Slightly decreased unrest (but increased it in castles).
- Fixed some incorrect descriptions for Governor and Military educations, as well as incorrect trait effects-
Both altmer faction should now be using lore strat models from the main mod, the other old models should now be used by Maormer only.
- Fixed wrong general models for Ashlanders (Nerevarine, etc)
- Fixed recruitment of Hands of Almalexia and Mournhold temple should now be possible to build only in Mournhold (on the global campaigns)
- Added the missing necromancer trait to spawned Mannimarco (the irony!). The trat now also mentions the ability of raising the dead.
- Added missing merc pools for Wrothgarian orcs.
- Fixed issues in recruitment trees of some factions, when some building levels didnt offer anything new.
- Added missing vampire bites for Dungeons-
- Added/removed ability to build roads and farms to some regions that missed it, or shouldnt have had it.
- Firearms references in text replaced with magic.
- Fixed the issue with pre selected windowed mode.
Bugs
- Some fortresses and citadels may still use wrong model in battles.
- Some dungeon battles/maps not working properly due to bugged terrain on strat map.
- Actually, not all khajiit epithets are used, should fix it.
- There may still be some crashes (make sure to apply the anti crash tips below!), please give reports, so that we can fix it.

Tips for fixing crashes and performance
(TRY THIS IF YOU ARE HAVING ISSUES PLEASE, before asking)
TIPS FOR CRASHES UPON LAUNCHING
- If you crash upon launching the game, you probably failed to follow install instructions so try again.
- If you dont have kingdoms.exe, make a copy of medieval2.exe (in the Medieval 2 parent folder) and name it kingdoms.exe. Its required to run mods.
- 4GB/LAA patch is a must, apply it to both, medieval2.exe and kingdoms.exe, otherwise you will not be able to launch the game. The Patch can also solve various issues when playing the mod.
- If M2TWEOP GUI fails to launch the game, run it as administrator!
- If the GUI fails to launch the game, and it reports it cant find a .dll file (XINPUT1_3.dll, d3dx9_43.dll,..), install DirectX from this LINK (the file should also be included in the download)
- If the game still doesnt start, also try removing/enabling compability settings for your medieval2.exe and kingdoms.exe, as seen below. This seems to work differently for everyone, so you need to try the variants for yourself. (for example for one person, medieval2.exe in compability settings makes him unable to start the game, while for me it works)
- If you cant launch the game, also see if your medieval2.exe and kindoms.exe launcher are of the same size. If not, delete kingdoms.exe, make a copy of medieval2.exe and name it kingdoms.exe (both launchers should be 19 212 kB)
TIPS FOR CRASHES DURING GAME
- Running the mod as an administrator may resolve various issues, so always try that, as well as enabling/disabling compatibility mode in medieval2.exe and kingdoms.exe (or only one of it, in case one of them cause the game unable to launch). In general, you shouldnt enable this unless you have issues in the first place, as it can also make the game less stable (though in 90% cases it helps with crashes tremendously) - LINK
- Overriding high DPI (as shown below) should also help with stability.
- If you crash upon loading saves/starting campaigns, try running a quick/custom battle first.
- If you have low FPS, try to turn off shadows, decrease unit size, or decrease your graphics in general and give high priority to Medieval II in Task Manager. If you have lags/lows FPS, you can try this TOOL.
- If you have steam overlay enabled, it should help with performance greatly, if you disable it.
- Adding this line in your The_Elder_Scrolls.cfg (under [io] section) should help with stability:
disable_file_cache = 1 # file caching disabled for better performance
Engine Overhaul Project is entirely safe! Your antivirus might flag it just because it modifies the game. If that happens, just give the file or a folder exception from the antivirus/defender.

reuploaded with a missing Germanicus battles script for Vvardenfell campaign, so in case you intend to play the campaign, you should redownload, otherwise AI will be pretty stupid in battles (more than usually)
Great stuff, Jadli!
Can't wait to try this stuff out! It's been a bit since I've played Med 2 and this update looks like a great reason to jump back into it.
For those who haven't tried it, this mod is great for MP Hotseat campaigns over Parsec. Basically, share your screen with your friends and play TES:TW together!
just reuploaded with little fix for guild windows, when you load a save
is there anyway to make the daedric realms playable in the other campagins, i edit the descr_strat but then it just freezes at minor factions, i just didn't know if it was possible or if i could edit a file to make it work
Well, they are playable when they are actually playable, that is, in Oblivion Crisis scenario, as there are the Oblivion Gates and so on, so you can actually do something.
In other campaigns, when on map, their actions are usually scripted a lot, so playing as them would be problematic for events (such as in Three Banners War or Septim Campaign).
Ofc, you can make them playable similarily as you did, but likely requires more changes... also, you would ofc have to teleport them to Tamriel yourslef, unless you also implement the Oblivion Gate travel.
So unless you are a good modder, you should probably stick with the respective camapign
Is there a chance that you can add a "lite" version of your overhaul with only new units and their retextures?
Never though of that. And not sure if I have time at this point :D But I suppose ppl are free to make submods like this
Hi, so the game was working fine on the old patch until I ran into what this hotfixed, the game crashing every turn after x amount of turns. Now, using the hotfix, custom battles work, campaign always crashes with an unspecified error. What do I do?
see the install instructions, there are many anti crash tips
The game keeps crashing after some turns, I think it's the dungeon faction causing it as I reloaded the previous same and lift the siege on the dungeon it did not crash but even if I don't attack a dungeon it still crashes after some turns, any solutions? I'm going to revert back to the old fix for now.
its just the end of turn stuff, not related directly to the dungeons likely.
These are mostly memory overload crashes sadly... see the install instructions for anti crash tips, such as the compability settings
Ehy man I've noticed a strange problem, whenever I go to 6 speed in a battle with archers firing their arrows the game starts stuttering like crazy, not only does this not happen in the base game but it only happens specifically when archers are shooting in this mod, and most prominently in sieges for some reason, I'm not a modder so idk what it might be but has anyone had a similar issue? and if so is there any way to fix it?
I also keep getting "medieval 2 has encountered an unspecified error and will now exit" every once in a while
i dont know, there alwayys issues when going too fast... see the anti crash tips, perhaps it helps
hey man i love this mod but i keep crashing at turn 3 or 4 can someone maybe help me?
See the anti crash tips
Hi all i installed just recently and tried it,currently its working so far but it crashes when selecting through the factions in the septim campaing
The world map flickers between less and more highlited will try a random faction tommorow to see stability of it, but so far looks promising.
sounds like you didnt delete the worlds folder during the installation?

How to Install The Elder Scrolls: Total War | Medieval II: Total War (2023)
Nice patch! "enable autoasaves" though lol
they were disabled, because they sometimes got corrupted i late campaigns
I have the same issue some others have had where as soon as i click start campaign the game crashes and im 99.99% sure ive isntalled everything correctly i used the video you linked as a guide and done every crash fix tip
thats weird, Im not sure, sounds like some missing files...
Hello there, I searched for the solution but I have no clue how to solve this problem. Installed the game step by step bunch of times now and still the same mistake. While turning on the game via M2TWEOP.exe, It says: I can not open M2TWEOPLibrary.dll
Anyone know how to solve this problem? Really looking forward to play this mod. Thank you Mike
I believe there is a solution to this issue in anti crash tips under install instructions
Installed the mod as shown, performed anti-crash tips, but keep getting this Building DB Error across a number of factions whenever I load up a save in the earlier bookmarks. Not seen it yet with the later ones. I even tested a save where I didn't do anything, reloaded it an hour later, and got the same Building DB Errors.
The error code mostly follows this:
"Building DB error - faction 'x' (slave, hre, england, etc) has gap in building prior to cidhna_mine (unavailable at level zero)
21:36:40.768 [script.err] [error] Script Error in mods/The_Elder_Scrolls/data/export_descr_buildings.txt, at line 9354, column 3"
As well as:
"Building DB error - culture db max settlement level differs from building db max settlement level for faction venice (bdg large_city vs clt huge_city)
21:36:40.765 [script.err] [error] Script Error in mods/The_Elder_Scrolls/data/export_descr_buildings.txt, at line 9354, column 3"
Edit: I checked where this line 9354, column 3, is and it doesn't exist. Its beyond the end of the txt file. So not sure why this Building DB error is happening.
This is no crash, just meaningless report due to EDB settings.
Just ignore it.
Either way ofc it would be best to start new campaign... but if you want to finish old saves, it should be fine
I did start new campaigns for sure. Tests still show just startup crashes when loading files from either the Black Drake or the Three Banners War. Other bookmarks work fine. Guess I will just play the latter stuff haha!
I repeat, this doesnt matter. These are not crashes, just some irelevant error logs. By crashes, I mean when the game CTDs
Sorry wasn't clear in my OP.
It does CTDs. I load up the file, unexpected error pops up, crash. Only for Black Drake and Three Banners War bookmarks. But that is what I am saying. It CTDs. I load up the file, unexpected error pops up, crash. Only for Black Drake and Three Banners War bookmarks. I even did nothing for a file for turn 0, saved it, tried it an hour later, same issue.
Log only shows those Building DB errors tho.
then it CTDs for other reason than this report.
So you are sazing it crashes when you try to load an old save from thiese early bookmaerks? Or that you cant start a new campaign?
I don't have any old saves, so only new ones with the early bookmarks. As I said, I would even just load up a new file, save it turn 0, and then reload it a little while later, CTD happens. I have an Ashlanders file in the Fourth Era, White-Gold Concordant bookmark, loads just fine without issue.
Thats strange, will check
Thanks for your help. If you need anything else, just ask.
Well you could send me the save and I can try to load...
Really not sure whats the issue since it loads fine for me...
All thanks to the TES TW Unofficial Patch Developer Team for this fantastic project.
The mod keeps crashing after a couple of turns.
caused Vardenfell campaign to crash after loading
I am playing the hold of eastmarch on the main campaign and I keeep crashing aswell after a few turns (usually when it is the AI's turn).
Before installing this unofficial patch my 2.0.2 Standalone + 4Gb was doing fine. Then I have followed all the instructions above concerning the instalation of the mod (deleting world, 2.0.4, 2.0.5, running as administrator, Large Address Aware).
I have also noticed that the game doesn't save itself automaticly so i must do it manually at the start of each turn to not lose my progress when a crash happend.
Any idea of how to fix those problems or what am I doing wrong?
Edit: I found what was the problem about my crashes, I was running the M2TWEOP.GUI as an administrator, not kingdoms or medieval2.
After the modification of that, the crashes seems to have stoped.
(no more crashes in 25 turn so far)
Ah good to heear!
