Freelance 3D modeller and games artist. Commenced my games industry career over 10 years ago, starting out at Warthog on the sci-fi FPS Mace Griffin: Bounty Hunter, and a space shooter of Battlestar Galactica. Most recently worked in house for Sumo Digital on a Tennis release for Sega, Virtua Tennis 2009 for PS3, Xbox 360 & the Wii, and I also worked on Sonic & Sega All-Star Racing. I have recently begun to teach 3D modelling and how that relates to games at several educational institutions including the University of Bolton on a part-time basis. Mod work includes development team leader, lore advice and modelling work for the Battlefield 2142 Star Wars themed mod First Strike.

I'm not sure, it emulates LAN, in that it fools the game into thinking it is a LAN game, but then works over the internet rather than a local network.

GameRanger is a facility which circumvents the need for the EA Master Server to be active to play multiplayer EA games, it basically emulates a LAN game if I understand it correctly. It works for BF2142, but there is no current workaround for mods of BF2142, so you can play BF2142 in some form via this, but not First Strike, Dnamro was in contact with the people with GameRanger at one point to see if they would continue their work on BF2142 to add more fidelity to the on-line experience for that game (not sure if the unlocks worked correctly in the last version I tested), and see if they could work specifically on getting First Strike to work, not sure if that went any further though.

Hi Doyle_138, we're more talking about converting First Strike assets for use in the Unreal 4 Engine. Then we'll be collaborating with the Battlecry guys in developing something new and Star Wars flavoured within Unreal 4, hopefully we'll be able to do more than have First Strike assets in there, but also take some of the gameplay style which made First Strike so popular over there too.

Singleplayer mode only (obviously I guess since you're playing off-line), this is just to prevent the need to log in to the now non-existent EA Master Server. When it can't log on it'll ask if you want to play in off-line mode. Apparently you can do this without disconnecting from the internet in some cases, it just takes a few minutes for the game to realise that it can't connect, and then will give you the same option as above. There is also a default account you can get to work if you never had an active account back while the server was still up. There is a link to that somewhere around here too, but you might not need it. Just try off-line first and see what happens.

If you can't launch the mod directly, launch BF2142, and then get into First Strike via the Community tab.

As Dnamro has mentioned below, the cancellation of the EA Master Server makes things difficult as you need to log on to play. However there are ways around it. Disabling your internet to play is one. And as noted below, running BF2142 via Gameranger and then using the community tab to launch First Strike also works.

Thanks for your comments and support Austen1000, nice to see you come over here and continue that support. With regards to bot support, you have to remember that even with First Strike the level of bot support that we enjoyed at the end didn't come till quite late in the day and well after the game had become well established and well rounded as a multiplayer experience. This is really a quite necessary way to go about it, as what use is solid bot support without an already solid and tried and tested gameplay experience for it to support? Only once we see how the game plays in multiplayer can we really see how best to make the bots perform for an immersive and believable singleplayer experience.

At these early stages many other issues will take priority such as the development of art assets, maps, coding and core gameplay concepts. Once these factors are taken care of to at least some decent level? Then bot support might come to the fore. That said, knowing Dnamro he is already tearing the Unreal 4 Engine apart looking into how to make some really cool bot support for the game. So be patient. Bot support might not be there from the get go, but it should be included at some point.

And with you mentioning that there will be no bot support in the new Star Wars: Battlefront, maybe that will be another key selling point for our game project which differentiates it from that game.

We did have a lightsaber in once for a pick up Jedi kit, this was originally out with the Bounty Hunter kit which we released for a limited time as a fun bonus. Since then we have found a place for the Bounty Hunter kit in the proper game, but the Jedi kit was just a bit of fun and wouldn't really fit in with the style of gameplay that First Strike is based around, so it was never seriously considered as a permanent addition.

No, the legal agreement regarding developing non-profit Star Wars related content prohibits us from using specific characters such as Vader, Luke & Han etc, but we are allowed to play in that general universe. Lightsabers and Jedi have never been an aspect we 're interested in anyway. With First Strike it is more about the grunts in the trenches, and the pilots and crew of the fleet. Plenty of other Star Wars games deal with Jedi and the other specifically named heroes.

Midgee, you should be able to play off-line when disconnected from the net, does it not then give you the option to play off-line? This doesn't require a log in and you should be able to get right in there with the option to use an off-line soldier. The go to multiplayer, select local and then choose co-op to gain access to the bot supported maps.

Yeah, was always a tricky proposition going with BF2142. The mod was originally for BF2, but when the walkers turned up in that game it became the natural choice, but the game's relatively low popularity did hurt us from the get go (I still rate BF2142 as one of the most underrated gaming gems out there, and one of the best Battlefield games).

With the space maps, you can't please everyone, but to be a truly all encompassing and complete Star Wars battle experience space combat had to be an element of the mod, and I feel was something that made the mod truly unique. How many other games have you go from running around as infantry right up to commanding huge battle cruisers? Or defending moon sized space stations via starfighters or turbolaser towers?

The game is very diverse, and that is a big plus to my mind. Sure everyone might not like space, but there are certainly those who do. It is akin to BF2 where some people prefer infantry only maps, which is fair enough, but we have more to offer than that, maps to cater to all tastes.

You can go into off-line mode which should allow you to play co-op and singleplayer. The lack of the EA Master server does mean no multiplayer at the moment unfortunately.

Some mods have managed to bypass this problem for BF2, but BF2142 handles the account log in slightly differently, which means we can't use that code for our mod with some tweaking.

There are a few issues with BF2, some technical limitations which hampered our development of Walkers. With BF2142 actually featuring Walkers it made it much easier to develop our walkers in that version of the BF engine.

Fair comment, but we had our reasons. We were only planning on a few more releases before calling it a day, and with only a skeleton crew Dev team porting to another game didn't seem like a viable option. Plus you have the additional factor of finding a more recent engine versatile enough and capable of doing what we need of it. Remember we're talking infantry scraps, walkers and other vehicles, plus vast space battles all in one package, which is a big ask. The hope is the promise of a new engine will draw in more people hoping to play it, and excite potential developers enough to join the cause and help out. We've got a few engines we're looking into. So could be exciting times ahead. We'll have to see how this goes.

That's the problem we're having to deal with. Unlike BF2, BF2142 never made it to Steam, digital copies were only ever available through Origin, so once EA dropped their support for it and stopped selling it, they have effectively taken it off the market. The only way you can buy BF2142 now is through second hand resellers, which sucks for us big time.

Yeah, I don't think they're compatible since it got integrated into the official mod properly. Most of the maps from that are now in the mod as the singleplayer portion, plus the AI support is much improved since the SP Minimod. If you have First Strike 1.6 you should be able to play singleplayer, you just have to do it off-line due to issues with the EA Master Server closing down, as mentioned in the latest news update.

Cheers. iRay is this cool renderer which takes your self illuminated materials and turns them into light sources. So The scene above has no lights in it, all the light is coming from the light details on the mesh. Very cool, and prevents the need for fudging it with lights around your scene to make it look like there is light coming from the supposed light sources in your scene.

Sorry you feel the new launcher looks bland, yeah it isn't as pretty as the old one, but with this one we were going more for the functionality and technical improvements rather than aesthetics. An interesting looking effect, but I don't think it is quite there yet, and needs a little more fine tuning, as others have noted, it looks a little weird to have a ship destroying explosion result in a debris field that looks almost exactly the same shape as the ship that was just destroyed. That would be a nice starting point perhaps, but then you'd want that debris field to expand and disperse with force as you'd expect from an explosion. It might also be nice to have larger recognizable ship specific chunks among the more generic debris, a booster here, a conning tower there, if you know what I mean.

Thanks for the compliments on the stories, they're doing their job then. They're based in part on the background fictions for the maps in question, but also on actual events which have occurred in the rounds played. I for example was the demolitions trooper on the Bestine blowing up Rebel Freerunners. It just helps to illustrate how much fun the game is and the exciting possibilities offered up by the gameplay. All being well it should encourage more people to give it a try.

Additionally if you like the stories you can find more examples on the First Strike forums, some by myself and others by FSDev Twigs who has written some absolute corkers that are well worth a read.

I'm with you there, big epic space battles (essentially X-Wing) done with next gen graphics, a good mix of close quarters city or cap ship interior based battles and wide open battlefields such as Hoth and Endor. I'm just buzzing at the thought of that gritty Battlefield feel being applied to the Star Wars universe, which is what First Strike was all about achieving. If they take one thing from First Strike I'd like it to be Withering Fire, the game mechanic by which all battlefield assets are susceptible on some level to any and all weapons fire. So you don't feel you have to run away if you come face to face with a tank if you don't have the correct kit to effectively take it on, so even a hand pistol will do some damage, not a lot obviously, but if there are a load of you all firing pistols at that target? I think that was one of the strongest design decisions made on FS which really defined the gameplay and resulted in players working more readily as a team together to take down superior foes. It would be nice to see something along those lines make it into the new SW:BF.

I don't want to derail this thread, but I will just briefly defend the mod here. Sure there were bugs in the early days but the majority of these were addressed in a timely fashion, and even the trickier ones are long gone now.

With regards to unique features there are many including fully integrated combined arms maps, cracking space maps and many vehicles not seen in other Star Wars mods such as the impressive Sentinel and Sandcrawler, solid co-op and singleplayer features. I think that First Strike has a lot going for it to be honest, and yes the community isn't what it once was, but we do arrange events to help players get the chance to have a full and rich multiplayer experience with the mod.

That's all I'll say on the subject here. Now back to your scheduled thread.

This is at the moment a relatively high poly model, it is yet to be optimised for in game use. I've yet to decide whether I'll drop the level of detail down that much yet, will depend on how the optimisation goes. At the moment all the detail you see there is geometry as the texture maps have yet to be applied.

With the power of PCs nowadays compared with where we were at when BF2142 came out a few years ago, we can throw a lot more polys at assets such as this weapon, so though this would have been considered a little too high poly for BF2142, I may not need to shave that much off of this to make it a viable in game weapon.

I have no other pictures of this weapon, such as wireframes published at the moment, but once I've optimised it I'll post a wireframe version for you.

Glad you're enjoying it guys, yeah, the AI is pretty well rounded now, much more capable of navigating the maps in interesting ways (You'll know what I mean by that when all of a sudden in a firefight you found that you've been outflanked by a bunch of bots ;D ), and the addition of greater bot functionality with their use of kit really raises the bar.

And yes, if you liked SW:BF2 you should enjoy our mod, but as Joshino says, we're a bit more tactical and rough and ready than that game, with an aim for more realism (which sounds a little daft when said in relation to a Star Wars game, but it makes a big difference in tone and gameplay), think of us as the missing link between SW:BF and the classic Battlefield games and you're pretty much there.

No we won't be doing that, I think we may have discussed this before, fighters are so small relative to the space environment that you'd have trouble spotting a whole one floating aimlessly in space, never mind debris parts of one. You literally wouldn't see it until you were right on top of it, and then if you blinked you'd miss it at the speed you're travelling, so it really wouldn't be worth it.

Now space hulks and debris from destroyed capital ships? That is a different matter, and we've been working towards some really nice debris fields as a result from extended capital ship warfare. A good round of Taloraan for instance should look like a proper starship graveyard by the time you're done.

Well like First Strike already has actually, with the FX-7 medical droid as a static health replenishment point as we currently already have in the mod. With 2-1B we'll perhaps look at some way to differentiate between the way both droids heal you, perhaps adding some additional bonus to the effects on the newer (to the mod at least) 2-1B surgical droid.

Remember this coming weekend is the Grand Finale of this First Strike Campaign. If you're already registered over at NIC don't forget to sign up for this final battle. The more players on there the more epic we can make this conclusion, and with 16 player Bestine, 64 player Jundland Wastes and 32 player Strike at Parmel (the votes are now in for the final space map), epic is exactly what we're going get this weekend.

Regular updates are here to keep people appraised of the situation over the length of the campaign, and the added exposure does seem to be drawing more and more new people to the mod. With most people complaining that there are not enough people to play with? This seems like an elegant solution. This week's match saw over 30 players participating and the numbers just get larger every week.

Well you missed that one. Battle of Yavin was played in the first week's round of battles, but it could get voted for again as there are two space round slots that can be voted for by campaign members towards the end of the event. Was a thrilling round of Escape from Hoth last week.

There is plenty still to go in space and on the ground, so get signed up for some cracking First Strike Campaign action.

Heh, and it's also good to check the beauty pass shots of the vessels to check them out, really look good in the engine. Though one error I noticed was the bump/normal mapping on the moon, need to reverse the effect as the craters on the surface look more like bubbles rising up rather than sinking into the surface as craters should. Other than that? Looks great.

Well from what I can tell it is going to be a gaming night free for anyone to come and attend and it will be a chance to introduce the mod to a lot of new players such as the community that Forgotten Honor brings with it. This should result in a nice highly populated server with new and old players alike giving people a good opportunity to experience the mod with large numbers of players.

Give them a more detailed account of what your problem is and someone should be able to help you. Most people can launch it straight away without issue, but sometimes with different systems (Vista and Windows 7 being major culprits) there are sometimes little tweaks that have to be made to allow it to run correctly. Our guys with more techie heads than mine should be able to sort you out.

Strange, try downloading it from a different mirror. If you're just getting the message that says the software can not be validated by Microsoft or whatever, you always get that with unofficial software, just download it and it'll be fine.

Aye, it sure does bring back fond memories. The one I was partial to was the latter one that came out with Return of the Jedi, the Forest Ranger Mini Rig whuch was kinda like a speeder with gyroscopically balanced cockpit, was pretty cool at the time.

We try and keep our vehicle lore source material to just the movies as much as possible, but every now and then something fun like this pops up and you have to go...
