A Story Of Death

Mod review

First two levels were really good because I couldn't find the hole in the first level and my friend couldn't find the hole in the second level.

But what was the point of the trap door blocking the door in the third level? All the locked doors in the fourth level? The unused items? And was that a cliffhanger?

-1 no music
-1 no notes, no mementos, no introduction to the custom story
-1 fresh meat is never used
-1 Orpiment, Aqua Regia, Cuprite, Calamine are never used
-1 map tear in gymnasium
-1 gatherer fell through the map
-1 cliffhanger?

With deadly greetings

Mod review

I actually finished this custom story back on 2013 December 6, but got to replay it today.

+0 good lighting in the beginning. Had a strange haze effect. Some parts of the maps were too bright but otherwise fine.
+0 film grain effect was interesting in storage, but wasn't effective in such a small area.
-1 no message on Archives door when opening it without key, I thought that the game was broken.
-1 Kaernk got stuck behind door after it shut breaking chase sequence
-1 first brute didn't path to chase me and second brute wasn't clear on how to avoid dying?
-1 many map tear under staircase to archives and on the corners before finishing the game
-1 plot lacked substance

I started this mod on 2016 April 17, I finished it on 2016 April 17... this shouldn't have been uploaded to ModDB without anything extra. If it had a disco room, or minigames, or custom events, it would have been worth putting on ModDB. There should have been no A House 2, it should have just been additions to A House.

24-Hour Amnesia

Mod review

It was a very unique idea to put a hub of custom stories inside of a single custom story, and with only 24 hours to work on each, I believe the end result was fantastic! The Brennenburg Brothers started playing this CS on 2016 March 6 and finished it on 2016 March 16.

+1 I didn't forget about Ralphie
+1 Oh no, not dubstep.
+1 Lights out...
Also, upon realizing that the hub of the game was itself a custom story that had to be finished in 24 hours, bravo, very well done.

+1 Observation by Apjim
Very fun! It was great seeing the full potential of the HPL Engine, the other BB and I were just talking about how some Layers of Fear-esque map generation could be added into an Amnesia CS, and this shows that potential.

+1 Journey to Brennenburg by Palistov
LOVED the puzzle!!! It took us a decent amount of time to figure it out, and it was worth it! Hope to see puzzles like this in future custom stories.

+1 Grave Robber's Nightmare by Kman
Very scary level, and no despawns! Despawns, unless scripted by the storyline, really ruin Amnesia custom stories, especially when the player dies.

+0 Sewers of Oblivion by Obliviator
Underwater effect would have been better with some sort of low grav, instead of locking items in-place. Hud effect was cool though.

-1 Scary Noises devin413
This was the worst custom story of the bunch. There wasn't anything interesting to it and the final solution wasn't very obvious (granted, he does tell you what you have to do).

+1 Untitled by Acies
Would be interesting to see this gatherer effect scripted into future custom stories. Jack and the beanstalk, don't wake the giant?

+1/-1 Funny Place by JMFStorm
This was.
Hilarious.
Sadly, I glitched through the map every time I played it and didn't get a chance to see the brutes until my other BB told me what they were, so I replayed the map.

+0 Challenge by Khyrpa
Reminded me of Dear Esther (vomit, The Chinese Room, vomit), except better than that entire game.

+1 Echos of the Past by Mikhail
Old Key was invisible, otherwise loved how the items reorientated themselves with progression (didn't notice until second playthrough). I always wanted something similar with the bread and apples going from fresh to rotten with sanity loss. Your little sister quickly becomes an afterthought.

+0 Tunnel Vision by Vradcly
Incredibly short. Barely memorable. Large boxes that can somehow be thrown are the only thing of note.

+1 Hunter by Statyx
Loved how the screen dimed as you put on your jacket, which makes sense if the character was putting on a shirt. The voice acting was actually VERY GOOD. Most voice acting in custom stories is horrendous, but this was great. The problem with voice acting is when it sounds fake, or that the person is reading lines. This sounded like a guy worried about his dog. Mrs. Harrison's voice could have been louder, and the only part of his voice that wasn't good was when he yelled "Hunter?!".

If I had to pick favorites, it would be the first three listed.

Unlike my other custom story reviews, where I start at 10 and count down with negatives, and then up with positives, I started at 0 since there were multiple stories.

Castle Darkuan

Mod review

The Brennenburg Brothers started playing this custom story on 2016 March 20 and finished it on 2016 March 27.

+1 for the destructable objects that DROP items! I mean, I knew I was going to hate them if I had to build barricades against a gatherer, but I didn't.
+1 for apparent randomization. It seems the first key to open the desk cabinet was in a different spot on second playrt
+1 lights slowly turned on going into the darkness in beginning of story
+1 for the information after clicking on props in the environment. On one hand, I like the extra dialogue. On the other hand, I can't pick up objects on a describable object. In addition, they're completely misleading. You give descriptions to "A pile of planks" or "A pile a bricks", but not "A pump that I can get water with"? When there's a source of water coming from the statue in the nexus?
+0 for no lantern immediately. I love custom stories that don't give you a lantern, or don't give it to you right away. This would have been a +1, but you didn't strategically light objects to compliment a no-lantern custom story. For instance, light the hallways but do not light the rooms so that the user's night vision can take precedence. Eventually you do get a lantern, so these points are mute.
-1 for not adding plot hints or quest hints in notes. This is an overall flaw of this custom story. I can't think of a single puzzle that was solved from the content of a note.
-1 for "Added X quest" and "Finished X quest" notifications. It ruins immersion.
-1 for the "Opening the cabinet quest" solution. You should have added a note that explained your grandfather was a pianist, or some sort of hint. It makes no sense for one key to be playable, but not other keys.
-1 for the first gatherer getting stuck in the castle doors
-1 lack of gatherers in Guest Room/Storage, despite being creepy levels
-1 for no autosaves between levels, such as from nexus to any of the auxiliary rooms such as the study, guest room, garden, etc.
-1 for the Guest Room crash!!! Happened to both my friend and I. It seems to re-load every single object on the map and then simultaneously break all of them
-0.5 for no rationale behind "Powering the rod machine" quest
-0.5 for having to click on the rod machine before being able to put the rods in
-1 ladder fell through the map

I think this custom story showed a lot of potential, and there were a lot of very interesting puzzles. The author just needs to work on storytelling and notes to aid the player, and less crash-prone game elements.

Brennenburg Brothers Progression: Docs.google.com

Finished this custom story and I have to say that it was bad in a good way. There were a lot of kitsch moments of jump scares that actually made me laugh. The scares that made me jump were VERY scary. I have three great fears in custom stories:

1. Gatherers popping out of closets.
2. Crawling mobs attacking me at the top of a ladder.
3. Faces of enemies taking up my entire screen.

I'll let the players find out which of them it was.

+1 great scares.
+1 for blending Amnesia and Penumbra models well.
+0 for adding the first female 'model' to Amnesia: The Dark Descent.
-1 voice actors need coaches on how to voice act.
-1 on the pathfinding of mobs not always working.
-2 on the story because it was completely incomprehensible.

Final review: 8/10.

Better Place

Mod review

tl;dr: This mod is great in terms of scares, not so great in terms of level design.

+3 Scares are fantastic.

-2 Lightning is fair or terrible in most levels.
-1 Tables in the dining room should have been centered or had a reason for being orientated on only one side of the room.
-1 Tearing in the first map after the dining room.
-1 Second gatherer got stuck going around the room.

Still not done with the mod, I'm only at the Hub. I'll continue it later.

Dark Saloon II

Mod review

This custom story was short, but hilarious. I love a good, fun custom story every once and a while.

+1 for the air cannon effect.
+1 for the dog animation. I wish I saw that more often in other custom stories. In a real setting, it would have really scared me!
+1 for great gatherer/brute scenarios, they were actually quite challenging to get around!

+0 for the plot, even though it was obviously the best plot in any custom story I've ever played.

I reserve ratings of 10 for the very best custom stories, so I have to reserve a rating of 9 for this one.

Dark Saloon

Mod review

This was a very quick custom story. Only about 30 minutes of gameplay. Usually my criteria for short custom stories is that they have to be high in quality. This wasn't a low-quality custom story, but it also wasn't a high-quality custom story.

+2 for good and funny jump scares. Some scared me, others made me laugh out loud. My two greatest fears in Amnesia are enemies at the top of ladders and enemies coming out of closets.

I know that a lot of people will critique my reputation as a critic for lauding repetitive jump scares, but each of them was very unique and some must have taken a LOT of work to map like the dead gatherers.

+0 for the lighting. The lighting was very well done and looked good in most rooms, but it just didn't look natural. For instance, there was good ambient light from the windows in the first room but it was otherwise very dark.
+0 for level design. Each room was very detailed, but it wasn't detailed enough for me give a positive rating for it.

-1 for no autosaves.
-1 for lack of music in the first level and intermittently throughout the custom story.
-1 for no plot.
-1 because I was able to open the door to the right in the last room by moving the wood barrier up without going into the room on the left first.

I created an extra_english.lang that can be put in the root directory of Posiadlosc Ferenczego:

Pastebin.com

Otherwise, all of the notes are blank.

Anyway, this was a very good, very detailed custom story for being so short.

+1 for good level design. The corridors were unique but not badly done, and each of the rooms had a lot of detail.
+1 for the custom paintings/entities.

+0 for the plot since there isn't officially an English version.

-2 for no autosaves. I wanted to reload my game to the last level in an attempt to get the other alternate ending (and get the gatherer to chase me down a hole), but no autosaves were created.
-1 because the brute got stuck on a hanging body.
