Horror has always been an area modders have explored in great detail over the years. In fact one of the first "big name" showcased mods, featured in PC Gamer and plenty of other places (back in the day when PC mags ruled the world) was They Hunger - a horror classic. Since They Hunger many horror themed mods have been released, some dark, some zombie based, some eerieely quiet and some edge of your seat "packed full of action".
So if you are prone to wetting your pants at the slightest scare these are probably not the titles for you. If however you crave something spooky this Halloween - sit back, dim the lights and enjoy ModDBs first ever mod countdown - as we take a look at the top 10 spookiest mods of all time as voted by our community.
Don't forget to watch this group for any more ModDB Mod Countdown's to come!
You may have already seen this (sorry if you have) just reposting with all of the mods linked in as a feature ->
lol... I hv no idea why ZPS will be the top 1.
It was user voted and ZP:S is a popular mod at the moment. Happy to hear about any horror titles we may has missed.
Yeah ZPS is incredibly not scary what the heck are people thinking its fun but not the most fun you can get like the killing floor witch is way better.
Yeah I also think that zombie panic source as number 1 is a bad choice; but as you said, it was fan voted. Either way, nice video. :)
I think Afraid of Monsters is the scariest one of them... but ZPS and Killing Floor are both good :)
zombie master isnt scary at all too even my bed is scaryer than that
(buried)
correct. Its just dumb.

^ BAAHAHAHHAHAA
no mention of Mistake -1? weird.
me to
never played ZPS,but i have done so in ZM, and i like ZM
Shouldn't it have been Rated on "SPOOKIEST" mod, not the best spooky mod? I understand the reason for ZPS for no.1 if it was the best spooky mod... not the spookiest though... for the horrors I have to agree with Sanjuaro; like Afraid of Monsters, They Hunger etc
If you ever do a second one of these Top Horror Mod Countdowns, Nightmare House 2 would have to be in the top 3.
I'm not sure if I agree with ZP:S being #1 (I would have given They Hunger that spot), but still a great list nonetheless.
They Hunger should be #1 imo.
Hmm.. Afraid of Monsters IS the scariest.. But then again "They Hunger" whereone of the first horror mods...
So yea.. And why is Pranoia so low on the list? It had some freaky moments.
They both had their own special style. Equally scary and equally immersive.
Check out Afraid Of Monsters DC and Mistake.
Those are two of the sickest mods ever to come out.
I have to confess; They had me SCREAMING at some points.
Paranoia is an AMAZING experience, it's really scary.
But the worst thing to do for the atmosphere is to add Metal
music to a fight scene. The team did well with all
the ambient in the beginning, but didn't realise that
fight scenes in horror games are best served with a hectic
Dark Ambient/Noise sticking needles in your ears and pumping
adrenaline in your veins.
fraid of monsters annoyed the crap outta me. Lost my battery power just after the elevator. Zombie Master looks good though
Different game. I agree with ZPS not being all that great, but you can't really compare the two, I geuss it all has to do with who the enthusiasts are how many there are. (Reply to Megaqgzqgz)
Seems bullet volume was more of a factor than actual scariness; Dear esther was scary, ZP:S was not.
Guns give you the sense of security. No guns, no security.
I like ZP:S and if you play with serious people its scary. I think you miss The Hidden: Source, that used to scare me :P
Exactly half the people who say ZP:S isn't good or isn't scary haven't played or haven't played enough to actually experience. If you play with serious people (who are good) on good maps. Personally I think H:S is scarier.
Nice vid.
One time I was playing on this new map, right. Holed up in this little glass observation room with nothing but a pistol and a few clips. A zombie jumps down and breaks the roof which scares the **** outta me but I manage to pop him. I think I am safe. I turn around to investigate a sound I heard and a zombie comes crashing through the window behind me. I was two floors up. By the time I was done panicking another one cut me off and I was done for. You have no idea how frantic I was. That's why I love ZP:S. Something scary happens, people freak, then laugh about it afterward.
Zombie Master isn't exactly scary unless you're playing a new map (btw, you picked terrible maps to play for the video), so it probably deserves the spot it got if we're talking about spookiness, but it's a great mod and much better than ZP:S imo. Plus it just got updated to 1.2.0 on friday!
Red Queen is not a terrible map. It's one of the few maps where there's actually objectives, and you don't spend the round cooped up in a house with your only objective being to survive for 10 minutes (that sounds like fun, but in reality it gets boring fast). If you're one of those people who just want to build barricades and shoot zombies the entire round, then ZM isn't the mod for you.
Actually I think your thinking of ZP:S with the ten minute barricade camp with Zombie Master gather items/get to the end of the level game play is the most common as I have seen very few maps that are based upon camping and all of them only after you have gathered items done objectives their only common(without objectives) in ZP:S ..........
Okay, uh, seriously like, no?
Paranoia, I understand.
AOMDC, I understand.
The rest is just really, really friggin dumb, boring, incredibly unbalanced <*Cough* Zombie panic *Cough*> or just a total rip off <Sorry Ser', but Killing Floor's latest update, really, did not make me any happier>
So uh, please rethink about the whole list, thanks.
Unfortunately I must agree ... this list doesn't consist of "spooky" mods at all, it's more a list of mods in which zombies appear.
well this is how the community voted, maybe if you liked a mod you could have voted yourself....
Well, maybe I have voted myself - but one vote is not much in contrast to these overhyped mods.
ZPS isn't really an overhyped mod, but it does fit into the horror category, and as henley said, it is a popular mod so all those who like it, voted for it. When it comes to the crunch, it's not scary in the slightest.
Personally, I think the hidden: source was the only mod that really could get me twitching with my mouse and I agree with Mr.Kadish, the sp in that was kinda scary, but unless you had a partner to go through the campaign with, it got really frustrating when you got down into the sewers and had to go do something to some electrical box or whatever it was.
So hands down for me it's the hidden: source.
AOM:DC should have been at the top imho. Zombie Panic Source? Pffft.
Zombie Panic: Source isn't scarier than They Hunger or Zombie master, and certainly not scarier than AoM:DC.
"Reavenholm".. REAVENHOLM?!
There already exists a mod called Ravenholm, so they had to go with Reavenholm to avoid unnecessary confusion.
8 mods where either from Half-Life or Half-Life 2. I guess that really means that Half-Life is the most modded game ever.
Come on guys, dont get all dramatic. I think this list works as a very good advertisment for the mentioned mods. I now want to play all of them! Good work Intense! Make more lists like that. And please, host a copy of the video on YouTube :)
mmm Zombie Master :)
Gotta love that mod...
Great Video! These videos really help me understand whats what...
Great vid but i cant help that THERE TOO MANY HALF-LIFE MODS IN THIS LIST JK i like it tho
Double that... It might be fun mod and with interesting concept but sure lacks spookiness.
Cheers for the mention :)
Though as far as "spooky", you might have done better putting up KF version 1.0s single player campaign...it still scares me to play :S
I was not aware that you had a campaign
Did you play KF 1.0?
nope
H:S so much better than ZP to me
Zp:Source/Zombie Master aren't scary, but they are fun.
After playing ZM, its more of a challenge to stay alive than spooky, which i like. The newer maps with objectives are nice, but usually very large and require lots of players.
