Description
Surprise Squadron was an Elite A-wing squadron armed with experimental ion proton torpedoes capable of heavy damage versus capital ship shields. Surprise Squadron was stationed aboard the Mon Delindo, one of the last remaining Mon Remonda-class MC80B cruisers.

The guys who took Kuat ....
Just looked these guys up on the wiki. The Ion torpedoes were experimental when the NR first took kuat in 8.5ABY and roughy 16.5 years later they are still experimental?. Don't want to sound rude or anything but you did say you wanted this mod to feel as real as possible
Well...
The only other craft that uses ion torpedoes is the k-wing with its plasma torpedoes, which are so large they need to be mounted on external wing hardpoints. The ion torpedo is small enough to fire from the light concussion missile launch tube.
Since no other craft has this powerful weapon, we suppose it is still deemed "experimental"... At least that was my thought process
There are enough examples of real life weaponry that was tested and proved very effective, but never really came out of the experimental stage due to cost, no time to retrofit older craft or a variety of other reasons.
I think this decision can be justified well enough.
