Description

The D-3 destroyer was an ancient Klingon warship that was already outdated when Starfleet first began exploring deep space in the 22nd Century. Bearing similar features that would continue to be part of Klingon warship design principles for centuries to come, the D-3 was a capable warship instrumental in growing the Klingon Empire. When it was finally decommissioned in the 23rd Century, the D-3 was left adrift in salvage yards across the Empire, and has remained inactive for nearly 150 years.

Now, with the war against the Dominion costing the Empire dearly and in critical need of ships, the Klingons came to the realisation that they indeed had a fleet of ancient but serviceable warships at their disposal. The D-3 was resurrected and brought groaning into Imperial shipyards, where they were hastily retro-fitted with modern weapons, shields and engines.

Even with these upgrades, Klingon engineers were wise enough to know that the ancient D-3 was no match for modern warships. To throw her into battle would be pointless and wasteful - both of which are repugnant to the Klingons. Instead the D-3 was equipped with a large hangar pod along her underside, perfectly suited to carrying a number of small strike craft.

Renamed the Kareli-class, these old cruisers serve the Klingon fleet as strike carriers, offering fighter support wherever it is needed. Furthermore, the eager warriors aboard the Kareli, possibly unhappy about being assigned to such old-fashioned ships, never pass up an opportunity to seize glory by boarding enemy ships and fighting their foes hand-to-hand, as any true warrior should. As such, the Kareli is well suited to seizing enemy vessels, or annexing neutral facilities to serve the needs of the Klingon people.

Regardless of its age, the Kareli stands ready to fight for the Empire once more. When battle calls, nothing can keep even the oldest Klingon warrior away!
