"with minimal support from the Federation" I believe every colony along that border basically said screw you to the Federation when they wanted them to evacuate. Now they're blaming the federation for not fighting for their colonies instead of avoiding more needless war. Not to mention falsely recruiting the Bajoran freedom fighters, who actually have a legitimate reason to hate the Cardassians. God I hate the Maquis so much.

The Federation barely has the resources to sustain the war. I remember during the Klingon in the alternate timeline, the Federation was actually doing pretty badly. Sure it wasn't the prime-universe, but it was basically identical with the small change of the lack of Enterprise-C sacrifice. The Cardassian war was beginning to show its wear by the time of its end. The Dominion war was losses on all fronts, its kind of a miracle that the Federation lasted as long as it did (Miracle reference intended).

Really not sure how the Maquis expected the Federation to draw out the war just to defend their homes. I get the plight, but they are being totally unreasonable and unrealistic in my opinion.

It was an imperfect cause, caused by an imperfect treaty, fought for by imperfect people.

The Federation signed the treaty without any regard for or consultation with the colonists in the area, and refused to stand up for them afterwards.

Equally to blame are the Maquis themselves - they refused to compromise on several occasions. Which is a major problem with 'causes'.

So the Federation was just expected to draw out the war because colonists wanted to live on the frontier, away from everything? It wasn't like the Federation had a lack of uninhabited M-Class worlds within its territory. Infact, it had more than quite a few. The Maquis are 100% in the wrong for wanting the Federation to needlessly sacrifice more lives and resources, just so they can live in their own little world. Its wildy selfish.

I get fighting for your home and what you believe in, but there's gotta be a point where you have to see the bigger picture.

Even the Dominion considered the treaty a tactical error on the Federation's part. It conceded too much to the Cardassians and caused a number of problems that could have been avoided with more negotiation. The Federation was too eager and gave too much.

As for the Maquis being selfish, that's the thing with causes - nothing else matters. There's no room for compromise and consideration.

Description

The Maquis resistance movement began as a result of the Federation-Cardassian Treaty that realigned the border at the conclusion of the Cardassian Border Wars. Hastily written by Federation diplomats eager for peace, the treaty effectively placed many Federation colonies in Cardassian territory. While the treaty stipulated that these colonists be allowed to stay on their planets, they suddenly found themselves under the heel of the Cardassian Union with minimal support from the Federation.

Feeling abandoned and betrayed by the Federation and suffering increasing 'unsanctioned' abuse at the hands of their Cardassian neighbours, it wasn't long before many of these colonists began taking action to protect themselves. Conflicts between Federation and Cardassian colonists culminated in many Federation colonists breaking away and organising into the Maquis, a group dedicated to driving the Cardassians from the De-Militarised Zone and forcing the Federation to rescind the terms of the treaty.

Equipped initially with a small fleet of fighters, runabouts and armed shuttles, the Maquis became better equipped over time. This growth was matched by an influx of personnel, from disgruntled colonists, to ex-Starfleet officers who sympathised with the cause, to drifting rogues spoiling for a fight. The Maquis fleet was reinforced by a growing number of Condor-class corvettes, which made swift and capable raiders, and eventually even a handful of unusual Yeager-class light cruisers.

Unfortunately for the Maquis their success eventually worked against them. As the Maquis movement gained momentum the Cardassians found themselves struggling to maintain a hold on their colonies along the border. Mounting pressure from the Maquis was instrumental in the Cardassians' decision to ally with the Dominion. Mere days after the alliance was established, the Maquis were eradicated by the Jem'Hadar. The few survivors fled into Federation space, hoping, one day, to avenge their fallen comrades.
