Welcome all to the first mod attempt of myself and two of my friends. Over the years there have been many mods for the Sins of a Solar Empire series. From Star Trek, all the way to the many factions of Sins of the Fallen. One thing I have not seen yet is something to bring the space combat of the Battletech Universe. That is what we will attempt to do here. The downside? Me and my friends are starting from scratch. We have 1% experience with modelling, textures, or anything else really important. This will be a learning process, so don't expect a quick release. What we are bringing to the table is the desire to see this powerful sci-fi title come to life in a way not yet seen. Discouraging comments will be laughed at, and positive reinforcement and criticism will be accepted happily.

As this mod is for Rebellion, our first goal will be to create a single race simply called Battletech. The loyalist and rebel factions will be split into Clan and Inner Sphere. Over time, we will expand this to make the Inner Sphere and Clans their own race, and have two factions more accustomed to their styles of warfare.

Battletech does not include shields, so they of course will not be in place for these ships. High Hull point values and armour rating will supplement this.
One thing we still are in discussion about is transportation. While in sins, ships can perform jumps freely, in Battletech, ships need to charge their Kearny-Fuchida Drive (or K-F Drive) by absorbing solar energy through solar sails. Depending on the distance from the star, this recharge rate could range from days to a week. Lithium fusion batteries allow for an extra jump charge. Greater detail on this will be announced once we are all in agreement.
You will also see a great deal more weapons fire from Battletech warships then the Tec, Vasari, or Advent as these vessels are covered in a great deal of turrets and missile launchers. Balance will be something we shoot for -after- we meet our content desires.

Right now, what we want to do is get enough models/textures, etc. finished to get a working alpha. We will test it internally, then release it for people to mess around with to get an idea of where we're heading.

Well I told myself that I'd do these once a month, but Halo 4, XCOM, and a bunch of stuff that went for dirt cheap on the steam autumn sale have provided a lot of distractions x3.

Anywho, here's what is up.

about 80% of our sketchup models were successfully converted into something usable by soft image. the rest turned into something really interesting. Seriously if I can recreate what happened to the concordat frigate and screenshot it, I'll put it up. Like if you shoved every carnival ride on a boardwalk together in a furnace. Froydoy is trying to create something that won't disfigure, though I'm thinking maybe it's time we looked into other software for modeling.

In my spare time I did the easy stuff of gathering all the audio effects we will need for weapons fire and whatnot, and I have a neat little script of lines for when you click on ships and whatever. Lotta lines from the novels that I still had laying around with space combat in them. Most of the voicework will prolly be done by us three, but I'd like to get a female voice in there so hopefully I'll find a friend willing.

Guess you could say we're doing all the easy stuff first to make it look like progress is being made. So far, texturing is looking like a very daunting task.

I can't stress enough that this is a learning experience for us. We started off with very little understanding of the work involved in making a mod. As our knowledge and (hopefully) our skill increases, you'll see the mod start to pick up steam. Until then, keep the expectations low for my sake :p

Oh and go vote for Dawn of the Reapers for mod of the year. Incredibly excited for that myself.

However, do not give up hope. A certain woman worked on a mod for 5 years, then released it, and that was one heck of a mod. She just slaved away at this one mod for 5 whole years... and then she decides to redo it. Make it better. Make it more the way she envisioned it. That's dedication.

I should say that i have been using 3d moddelling programs for 2 and a half years now and have a little bit of experience texturing, though i too am a highschool student. but i do have lots of free time.
