Updated 17 July 2009, fixed several issues & added a dynamic crosshair when using the keypads & lab buttons. Requires Episode Two.
This is the installer version. Hopefully it should fix an issue with the mod not showing up on steam games list at all.
Very late edit:
This mod was created by mbortolino, send your PM's to him about the mod.
I(DuckSauce) simply created this installer due to issues people had with the regular zip files.
Editted in now because Mod of the Year kicked in, who knows what people will flood here and get confused :P
200 words This is the installer version. Hopefully it should fix an issue with the mod not showing up on steam games list at all.
It turned out I shouldn't have put it in C:, but in Users.
Uhm, it doesn't go in either of those places. The mod folder should be at:
C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\sourcemods\
Well, that didn't work for me, I must be special :P.
If that didn't work for you, putting it in Users will work less.
Did you restart steam after putting it in the sourcemods folder?
The download at filefront isn't working for me..keeps saying page was reset or something..sucks the big one.
I finally got it to download, but nonetheless it was pretty frustrating. Hopefully Moddb can host the installer in the future.
Does this fix Mr. Whirly?
wouldn't know, but it's the same updated version released yesterday, if you didn't download that one you may give this one a shot, I don't think it does fix anything related to Mr. Whirly though.
OK so we shouldn't use this file then?
nope, I created it for the people that were having issues having it showing up on steam(it seems there are at least 2 possible sourcemods folders, the installer should automatically pick the right one for those people)
It doesn't, I suffer EVISCERATOR's bug.
And what if it doesn't?
Edit: Then you don't have Episode 2. Doi.
1 of the best mod !!

So epic mod!!!

wait..do i have to convert the .zip file to .rar to open it?......and i use 7z to do that?
DuckSauce - I registered just so I could post here and thank you for this great mod. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I did find one place where I unintentionally bypassed one of your puzzles. Would you like me to post the information here, or how can I get in touch with you? I don't think this forum has a PM feature.
They changed it for a .exe file.
/facepalm @ all .zip askers
DOWNLOAD THIS MOD OR GO TO HELL!
True...True :D
minus the mr. whirlie exit glitch i experienced, fantastic mod. if half-life 2 and portal were to have a baby, they would give us research and development.

"Error!
Cant find background image
materials/console/startup_loading.vtf"
For those who are having trouble getting the game to run, here is what you gotta do (Fix for steam version users):
1. Install Research and Development right here, there should be a big button that says "Download Now!" in the (Installer) section.
2. Make sure you have half life 2 episode 2 installed in your steam library, as well as the most recent fix, which you can find here: Moddb.com
3. For convenience sake, locate your sourcemods folder and place the installer, as well as the .zip file in it, should be something like "C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\sourcemods".
4. Additionally, make sure that you start up "Half life 2: episode 2" at least once, and then verify integrity of its cache. (Not sure if you'll also need episode 1 though, it shouldn't matter if you don't, if the mod uses episode 1 textures it might give some of the pink and black unknown texture models, which shouldn't be the case for this mod.
5. Load up the installer in the sourcemods folder, it should be something called "RD_17.7.2009_Full_Install". It will bring you through the installation process, and make sure that the contents will be installed in sourcemods (which is normally set by default).
6. Now, once you restart steam, you should see "Research and Development" in your steam library. You are probably stuck at this part, since if you try to play the game, it will give you the error message "Can't find background image ...".
6.5 Due to the new engine branch of Source 2013, also known as "SteamPipe" branch update, it has caused some incompatibility issues on mods that have been made prior to 2013, so this is something that has to be done on most older generation mods.
7. Anyway, on to the most important part. You should also have the patch made by malorite, props to him for the fix. The .zip file should be called "Research_and_Development_Fix_11_27_15". What you need to do, is place the contents of the patch into the main Research and Development mod. Extracting inside of the folder won't be enough, you need to add all the contents within into the "Research and Development" folder. Which should be the following "bin, cfg, resource, gameinfo.txt, README_fix.txt". If it asks, replace any of the existing files.
8. Now, you should be good! Make sure "gameinfo.txt" in the Research and Development has a bunch more stuff than it did on the old mod, and with that said, all you need to do now is go back to the steam library, search for "Research and Development", run the game, and then it should be good!
_Conclusion
If you have problems with any other mods you wanted to play, here is a link to a method that will work and make the mod compatible with the newest 2013 SteamPipe branch:
Steamcommunity.com
With that said, hope it helps! If you have any questions, feel free to ask, but I am unlikely to respond in a long time, and I might even know how to answer you depending on how much information you are giving me.
I tried to be as thorough as possible here, so I hope it's enough to get your game running!
Oh, almost forgot. You need to also install "Source SDK Base 2013 Singleplayer", you can find it by running this:
Rungameid
Which is found in here: Developer.valvesoftware.com
Once you got Source SDK Base 2013 Singleplayer installed, you need to run it at least once, check the integrity of cache, set the beta to opt into as "upcoming - upcoming"... Optionally, also go in General, copy paste this in your launch options:
-game "Research and Development"
I don't know much about why it works the way it does, but launching the SDK itself won't work necessarily, you'll just see a background of the citadel with missing textures on the floor. (Don't forget to restart steam, and do the integrity cache check as mentioned before!)
That, my friend, is where you locate back to "Research and Development" and run the game, that's when the game will fully launch correctly, with all materials and textures correctly attributed! Hopefully!
(If this somehow still doesn't work for you, try copy pasting the modified "Research and Development" into the SDK itself (This you will need to use the launch options and play it from there). Here is where to find it "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Source SDK Base 2013 Singleplayer")
Alright, for those that can't get it to work because of an error or the water in the main menu has a missing texture then here should be the fix:
First, right-click Source SDK Base 2013 Singleplayer in the Steam library and select properties. Under the General tab, you will search Launch Options and add this in the space: -game "Research and Development". Keep those quotes.
Second, go to the Betas tab and make it upcoming - upcoming. This may change in the future so if it does just try whatever is there after the process is over.
For water with missing texture:
You only installed the patch and not the mod itself. Download the main mod called Research and Development. You can find this under the files tab at the top of the page
For error when starting the Source SDK game:
You need to download the patch called Research and Development Patch - Source SDK 2013. You can find this under the files tab at the top of the page
You need to install the patch or move the mod to the right place. Make sure to move the main mod to where the SDK game folder is (for example mine is at E:\SteamLibrary\steamapps\common\Source SDK Base 2013 Singleplayer). The "Research and Development" folder should be in "Source SDK Base 2013 Singleplayer" folder. Now download the patch at the top of the page and overwrite the contents in the "Research and Development" folder. That's literally it.
Restart Steam just in case.
This worked for me after 2 hours of meddling. Hope this works and have fun
