Research and Development is a puzzle-centric mod for Half-Life 2: Episode Two featuring an unarmed player but plenty of violent mayhem.
Updated 17 July 2009, fixed several issues & added a dynamic crosshair when using the keypads & lab buttons. Requires Episode Two.
Thanks.
Er, this has the game WITH the fixes?
I guess soo because both files are about 81 megabytes
I didn't have any problems except for collision and one of the things on the boat after they throw grenades at you.
Umm soo what fixes exactly? I would like to know because im bugged at the part where you have to get out of the Cart and it thinks im in it so i cant move myself but i can still control the Cart.
All I had to do was press Space and it let me out of the cart just fine.
I pressed space + crouch. Since there were no weapons, I set crouch to Q, allowing me to exit out of the Cart nice and smooth.
The problem is that you are still controlling the cart after you exit it. The engine doesn't stop and all movement except jump and crouch is applied to the cart while you stand stock still.
Got a workaround. After exiting the cart with the use key, bring down the console and submit this:
ent_fire ui disable
That should have read "ent_fire ui deactivate", sorry.
Thank you so much, that really helped me :)
Nice mod :D !
Am I supposed to take the file out of the zip and place it in my sourcemods folder? because I did that and restarted steam and it doesn't show up. =/
same
I've been having the same problem, I want a solution but everyone just puts ******* spoilers.
Do you own Episode Two?
Yes, this mod is broken, I also restarted steam, and I put it in SourceMods. I followed the standard procedure with no results.
Where is the gameinfo.txt file located?
It's in there with everything else, is there something special I should do with it?
I have make a account on ModDB just for say this :
Excellent mod ! I need a part 2 ! :D
Yes part 2!!
Very interesting and qualitative mod. Thanks!
Link appears to be broken now. =/
MOTY
Doesn't show up on steam :/
And yes I do have Source SDK
I have no idea how to start it up. HELP!
Unpack Research_and_Development.zip to folder "half-life 2 episode two".
Rename folder "Research and Development" to Research_and_Development.
Run "hl2.exe -game Research_and_Development".
Just got done replaying this. Probably my favorite Source mod of all time.
doesn't work

I've downloaded and re downloaded this mod several times but its always missing "startup_loading.vtf" does anyone know how to fix this?
can someone please tell me how to download this without the vtf file missing problem?
does anybody care about the 10+ people with the startup_loading.vtf missing error?
i have the same god damn problem
Why does it say missing console startup texture? Please this looks like an awesome mod and I just want to play it...
Alright, for those that can't get it to work because of an error or the water in the main menu has a missing texture then here should be the fix:
First, right-click Source SDK Base 2013 Singleplayer in the Steam library and select properties. Under the General tab, you will search Launch Options and add this in the space: -game "Research and Development". Keep those quotes.
Second, go to the Betas tab and make it upcoming - upcoming. This may change in the future so if it does just try whatever is there after the process is over.
For water with missing texture:
You only installed the patch and not the mod itself. Download the main mod at the top of the page.
For error when starting the Source SDK game:
You need to download the patch called Research and Development Patch - Source SDK 2013. You can find this under the files tab at the top of the page
You need to install the patch or move the mod to the right place. Make sure to move the main mod to where the SDK game folder is (for example mine is at E:\SteamLibrary\steamapps\common\Source SDK Base 2013 Singleplayer). The "Research and Development" folder should be in "Source SDK Base 2013 Singleplayer" folder. Now download the patch at the top of the page and overwrite the contents in the "Research and Development" folder. That's literally it.
Restart Steam just in case.
This worked for me after 2 hours of meddling. Hope this works and have fun
