An expansion/overhaul mod of epic proportions, with entirely rebalanced gameplay, expanded factions, new gametypes, graphical overhauls, and five new factions; stealth-based Confederate Revolutionaries, tower defense-inspired Atomic Kingdom of China, economy-focused Mediterranean Syndicate, DotA-esque Order of the Talon and spammy Electrical Protectorate.

Obviously we are probably all RA3 fans here, but are there things from other rts games that you liked, like a mechanic, idea, or unit?

I used to play an old rts game called Metal Fatigue, and while I never played online (and thus probably was horrible), it had some interesting mechanics to it.

It had bombers, tanks, and ludicrously over-sized mecha called "combots" that were the main force of an army.

Each combot was build from a series of parts so you could customize them: leg, torso, and left and right arm weapon parts- and each faction had fairly unique parts to use. If a part fell off of a combot or survived its death, it could be dragged back to the structure that assembled combots to be used again- or if it was an enemy part it could be researched to unlock the part.

The game's resource was called Metajoules, which was energy either harvested from lava pools (somehow) or solar panals- and had a manpower rescource system for bases that you could alleviate by building an AI structure.

The most interesting part of it is that each map had three zones: surface, orbit, and underground.

The underground was accessed by tunnel openings on the surface, only tanks could go in, solar panels did not work there, and it had the best lava pools.

The surface level was the standard level for fighting, with standard lava pools and solar panel function.

The orbit level consisted of strangely floating platforms, could only be accessed by flying units, and solar panels worked very well there.

I like how the game required different units to hold the different levels- and having control over orbit or underground could be very good for an economy advantage.

Anyway, do you remember any rts that stood out?

Rise of Legends. it's an awesome RTS wich didn't receive a proper fanbase. Don't know if that's changed in the last few years.

well obviously it's Company of Heroes. Spiritually feels like C&C, plays like something made by the über lords hands. Stuff like directional armour, cover seaking infantry, strategic artillery barrages, limited weapon arches, supressing infantry, accuracy and fire rate modifiers for different range, speed and stance.

But no idea talking more about CoH since OSB is already putting in alot of things from it.

But AoEII. Great game a real RTS if you ask me, no bothering with stuff as stop micro, and using secondary abilities to freeze the enemy and hard counter him in different non-logical way. Just keep the balance between economy and army, and use the right units because it is a stone-paper-scissors game. Also it's important which way you send them upon your enemy. You don't want to charge with cavarly right into the enemy lines, they probably have pikemen, you gotta take them out first or attack around them...

basicly it removes the (all for me) irretating stuff, like terror drones harrasing your collectors etc. Instead you'll probably encounter a raid against your workers, which like just feels more fun, gritty and realistic.

Maelstrom was painful to play, but did have a good idea behind it; changing the terrain was one of the main areas of strategy.

Seriously though, that game was quite literally painful to play.

Hadn't heardn of it before now, and the more I look at images for it, the more confused I get.

Rise of Legends is indeed badass, and I'm a huge fan of Company of Heroes. I also ran Dawn of War 1 and it's expansion packs INTO THE GROUND over the years. Homeworld is also an impressive and unusual take on RTS. Basically, if Relic made it, it's going to be good.

Also, the Star Trek Armada are interesting and fun.

I would say R.U.S.E and Civ 5 should get a mention. When I'm not playing RA3 I usually play one of those.

RUSE you say? I played the open Beta, but was dissapointed (probably because everything I download via steam lags -.-') Also the Huge units gave me an impression that terrain and other tactical elemnts didn't matter (since that soldier is higher then the church tower anyway, how is he gonna hide behind that small rock?)

something one really should test for real?

Dawn of War 1&2 (ALIEN BEANS!) well, its just fantastic, very fun and 1 had loads of races with own little ways of doing things, and 2 is awsome to watch, let alone play, heh

@GriffinZ: If you scroll in enough, you can see it is a squad of infantry perfectly scaled, its just upsized when zoomed out so you don't lose them in a huge map.

@Ifork: I do admit I like Civ 4 a tad bit better, but the graphics and (some) aspects of gameplay are excellent.

Yes, I do know that, however, I don't now the tactical deapth in a game where units are just represtended like that.

@Protoid they dumbed down the features in civ 5 so much that it just gets boring and no way in hell am I gonna pay for maps and new empires that should have been in there. Only thing I like in Civ 5 is the graphics and one tile system and perhaps the culture. (civ 4 is better in nearly every other feature specially Rhye and Fall)

Metal fatigue, aoe2 and c&c red alert 2 are my favourites along with act of war direct action. Aow is unique with POWs a prone ability as well as a awesome storyline that I enjoyed. I want to try Dow2 though it looks cool

RUSE pissed me off. I played the demo and first thought "its a pretty cool ww2 rts" then came the nuclear long Tom. In 1943!!!
