Gunslinger's Academy was formed in 2010 with one goal in mind: Bring gun combat to Jedi Academy. What is "gun combat" anyway? Well, no more sabers of course. :P But now it has grown to become a full mod, with not only sabers removed, but a whole slew of new features, including:

Feel of War: Reworked Combat Mechanics

The battlefield is vastly different every year. Of course, some things never change- such as recoil, weapon spread, and other variables. You'll need to adapt to your preferred weapon, and focus on these points:

  • Dual Wielding: Most sidearms and even some primary weapons allow you to have them equipped in the left hand, as long as your right hand weapon is the same. Unlike most shooters, you can mix and match your dual-wielded weapon. For example, you can equip a P90 in one hand and a Sawed-Off Shotgun in the other.
  • Speed/Sprinting: Each weapon will weigh you down differently, so you will want to choose the right weapon for the job. Of course, you can always just keep sprinting and hope you don't die.
  • Spread: 'Spray and pray' becomes 'spray and pray and keep on praying'
  • Recoil: It's a proven fact that weapons kick. The recoil feature of Gunslinger's Academy gives you a nice feel of what that's like.
  • Aim Down Sights: Aiming down your sights is not necessary, but it sure does make you more accurate.
  • Firing Modes: Some weapons, such as the MP5, have special trigger groupings which allow you to make your weapon more efficient. Use them wisely.
  • Reloading: You'll need to reload your weapon in order to keep it stocked with ammo. This isn't JK3, private.

Tools of War: New Weapons and Items

As a soldier in this modern conflict, you must pick and choose what weapons will suit your fancy. You have three options which must be chosen carefully: your primary weapon, sidearm, and your choice of explosives. The choice is yours - but choose wisely. In case you can't decide, there's always a "random" option.
List of new weapons:
- Primary Weapons -
M16 Assault Rifle w/ Grenade Launcher or C-Mag
AK-104 Assault Rifle
H&K G36C Assault Rifle
Steyr AUG Assault Rifle
FN P90 SMG
MP5A3 SMG
MP5SSD3 SMG
UMP .45 SMG
M14 EBR
Barrett M98C Sniper Rifle
DSR-1 Sniper Rifle
L85 Bullpup Sniper Rifle
Ithaca 37 Tactical Shotgun
M1014 Tactical Shotgun
Sawed-Off Shotgun
M249 SAW LMG
- Sidearms -
M&P 40
Glock 18c
FN USP Match
Steyr TMP
Magnum
Micro Uzi
TASER Stun Gun
- Explosives -
RPG-7
Frag Grenades
Flashbangs
C-4
Gas Grenades
Stun Grenades
Smoke Grenades

List of Killstreak Rewards and Items:

  • Recon Team: On your mark, reveals enemies through walls for yourself (and your teammates) for 30 seconds.
  • Portable Gatling Gun: Control a deployable minigun until your next respawn
  • IR Goggles: Reveal infrared information with these (until your next respawn)
  • Sentry Gun: Rapid-fire robotic turret that actively pursues targets with firepower.
  • Missile Strike: Paint an area to decimate with missiles

Spoils of War: Achievements and Killstreaks

As you kill your foes, you continue to reap rewards, both ingame and out. Your increasing killstreak (kills in a row without dying) harbors new rewards for you, including Recon Teams, Thermal Imaging Cameras, Sentry Guns, and more. And of course, no soldier would be complete without his Medal of Honor. Your duties on the field will result in you receiving recognition, in the form of Achievements. Highly revered soldiers and combat veterans receive additional, hidden rewards, in the form of Feats. These also come in several categories, including Feats of Strength, Valor, Perfection and Teamwork.

Winning the War: New Gametypes

Domination: Your team must score as many points as possible. There are three control points in the map. Stand by a control point to capture it. You get (# control points) per 5 seconds as score.

VIP Escort: Blue team must get their VIP to the exit point before time runs out. Blue wins if Red kills their VIP, or the VIP makes it to the escape point. Red wins if the VIP is tasered, or doesn't make it to the exit in time.

Commander Escort: Each team must get their Commander to the exit, without the commander dying. First team to lose their Commander loses, first team to get the commander to the exit wins.

Hero TFFA: The player with the lowest score on each team is chosen to be the Hero. The hero gets special benefits, until they aren't the lowest scoring player any more!

Ninja: Grab the Katana to become the Ninja! The ninja can only use his sword, and he's the only one who can score. Once dead, he drops the Katana, and another Ninja is chosen.

Sounds like you're on the right track. For GSA-specific mapping entities, you'll need the GSA SDK (which isn't out yet, but I'm working at it!)

Uhm now that I see it, are there any plans on adding any kind of hands that hold the weapons, and after that if possible, reloading animations? I think it would add tons of immersion to the game, even only the hands models.

Anyway, good job already with the gameplay, I hope that when you guys finish polishing it can focus on improving graphical things like this ^^.

Good luck again, and have fun ^^

Reloading and hands are very much possible, the problem is that we're limited in our graphics department. But it is something that we're really looking into.

Well since the first time I saw this mod in moddb I had one question: Why using the Jedi Academy Engine while you have ID tech 3 engine for free (as you know, Jedi Academy Engine is based on ID tech 3)?, as it would make everyone play the mod and not just those who have Jedi academy (I have it anyway, just thinking on everyone).

Anyway, I suppose you have your reasons, and I repect that, just curious about it being done in JA.

Thanks for your time, and good luck ^^

Good question!
While we have no current plans to port Gunslinger's Academy to Q3, a lot of the features of Q3 (ie access to the renderer, networking, all that) are very desirable to us. The main issue at the moment with porting to Q3 is that we have very little content compared to a full game (we have few maps, no characters and no main menu UI started). Also, the EFX engine in JA is absent in Q3.

Yes, and we've even improved them a bit, TAB bots are the most advanced and don't require bot routes (they're from the OJP mod)
