Jabber/XMPP works like any other IM client. The difference is only that you don't have one central server. It's more like e-Mails. Your e-Mail is hosted by one server and you can send e-Mails to anybody else no matter what server they use. So grab a Jabber ready client ( on Linux this can be Kopete, Psi or Pidgin, on Windows Psi and others ) and create an account on a Jabber server. Usually any Jabber server allows creating accounts so pick one you like ( just enter "jabber server" into google and pick one close to you ). Once done just add me.
