Yeah, this is great news, especially for the mod players. However, even though the SDK is free it seems that you'll still need to buy the games that you want to build mods for (except TF2 of course). You can't really build a map for HL2 (or any other Source SDK supported game) and test it out if you don't actually own the game to play it with. Not really that big a deal though because you probably already own all the Source engine games, correct? Valve FTW.

Yeah, you're thinking of Epic Games licensing deal. Unfortunately, Source isn't as cheap and easy...

Congrats to the winner and finalists!

Thanks for the comments guys, we're stoked to be sponsoring the awards again this year!

Yes, it's true, design3 does have a low monthly subscription fee in order to see all the tutorials. But, you can also register a completely FREE membership and get total access to the design3 community as well as access to certain free video tutorials. The trial membership will not cost you a dime and is a good way to check out design3 before signing up. You can register a free trial membership here:

Design3.com

Thanks again guys, we're really looking forward to seeing this year's MOTY / IOTY entries!

Yeah, this is a really cool (and funny) tutorial that will get you started making machinima in the Source engine. The first 13 chapter videos are completely free, you just need to register a free trial membership.

design3 has always required a membership and there is a FREE trial membership option you can sign up for. With that FREE trial membership you'll have access to certain videos, the first 13 chapter videos in this tutorial for example, but to access the rest you'll need to buy a subscription. Since we're spending time and money making the tutorials we also need to make money back, this is a business after all.

ha ha yeah, unfortunately it doesn't look like Mod Tool will continue to be updated and maintained by Autodesk, which is a major bummer because its such a great program and has the perfect price tag...

Yeah, even though the tutorials were made with an older version of Softimage (or XSI as it used to be called) they are still relevant and work for the newer versions.

Definitely a good point, thanks! As we add new tutorials we'll also make certain tutorials or chapters available to the people registered with free trial memberships (people without memberships will still only have access to the introduction chapters). We just opened up all of the "3D Content Creation" tutorials (Softimage, Maya, and 3DS Max) and the first 16 chapters of the Source Level Design tutorial. Register a free trial account and check 'em out!

-I'm guessing that you would have to be an enrolled student at Huddersfield University to get access to their "free" tutorials? Here's their tuition rates in case anybody wants to compare it to 20$ a month: Www2.hud.ac.uk

-Our tutorials are strictly video based so I'm not really sure how useful copying and pasting would be to anybody. We're definitely helping our members develop their games by responding to their questions in our forums and working on tutorials that they suggest.

-While they might not be the best solution for everyone, tutorials are definitely not useless (especially video tutorials). Tutorials make it possible for people to learn things by themselves in their own homes without having to pay big school tuitions or buy expensive books.

-Congratulations on your success as a professional UI artist! Where do you work currently? Maybe you'd be interested in doing a UI art tutorial?

Just my two cents about your two cents.
