This zip file will quickly set you up to enjoy Quake the way I prefer it in early 2021. It keeps the retro-style graphics with textures and models similar to the original Quake game, then adds smoother animation, improved lighting, better particles, more gore and gibs, a few additional sounds, and subtly adjusted gameplay. If you instead want a significantly different and more modern graphical change, check out the Epsilon mod instead.

This zip file includes the following mods/features. I set up the folder structure so you can probably figure out what to replace when updates for these various mods become available. And if you like a specific feature, check out the associated link and leave comments and/or a review for the author.

Most of my time assembling this zip file was spent learning about the many features of Small Mod Compilation by Seven. I spent about a full day tinkering with the config files to get my game set up just the way I like it. Many optional features of Small Mod Compilation come disabled in this zip file. However, you can experiment with the file smc_config.cfg to see what each feature does. If you really want to investigate all the features of Small Mod Compilation, download all the SMC files from Dropbox linked at the end of the opening post by Seven at Quakeone.com and examine all the instructions therein.
