The Doom Engine, is the game engine that powers the id Software games Doom and Doom II, as well as Raven Software's titles Heretic and Hexen, then finally wrapping its final license with Rogue Entertainment's Strife.
Graphical system features:
- Renders in VGA 320x200 256 colors
- 35Hz page-flipped screen updating
- 2D Sector-based maps
- Floor and ceiling texturing
- Wall texturing
- Animated wall and floor/ceiling textures
- Transparent wall textures (holes)
- Sector lighting, with animation of lights
- Screen-size and low detail mode (horizontal pixel double) for slower computers
- Certain colors on sprites can be remapped to a different color automatically
- Top-down automap feature
Audio system features:
- 11,025Hz playback frequency
- 8 sound channels
- Stereo support
- Adlib (OPL2 FM), General Midi and Gravis Ultrasound support for music
- PC speaker support
Networking features:
- IPX
- Serial, with null modem cable
- Modem
- Synchronized - players must have the same settings as the other for proper play
