Been a while, hasn't it? I wanted to chat a bit about our work back in the day, if you remember much of it.

I'll be in touch.

Hi there,

Sorry for the late message this time, but I've finally worked into a big breakthrough. I've overhauled a good portion of the program's UI to be a bit more user friendly than what it was previously. A few features need to be touched up, but I'm fairly satisfied with it so far.

My time in Virginia Tech being a big help for once.

Not sure what the problem is with the graphic preview trying to load. Filing it under 'non-issue' for now. In the trash. Was nice to find the particular image used for it. It's been a long time since I've taken that particular drive to work, always passing by the mountain on the freeway.

Found some more old work as well. Remember having to sit through this every morning?

You wouldn't want to be the one trying to get this to work, haha. I must have been in the chair for hours while my partner was constantly rebooting the hardware. I guess it wasn't so bad in retrospect, especially now that I'm talking to you again. Sounds like you're doing a lot better lately at least.

I said before they were insane for involving water in what we were working on. Well. They surprised me later that year.

An entire swimming course.

This used to be part of the decommissioned water filtration plant, with some additions such as supplemental drainage and lighting systems. All re-worked into this absolute contraption of a test course.

No luck with getting into other files. Seen in the updated interface, however, I was able to crack a small work-around that provides some more stability than the regular bootup. Safe mode seems to bypass a lot of strange security checks that don't seem to be present in any of the source files I have on hand currently. I think it's trying to connect to something when running in normal operation, which would explain the security checks as whatever the destination connection is, but I have no idea what it could be connecting TO. I'm blocking any potential outbound connection protocols in the future, I have a bad feeling about potentially getting someone's unneeded attention.

That's all for now.

Be in touch,

- Jirard

"What a weird mod this is!" Trust me, I know how you feel. Given the overwhelming response of "huh?" I've generally gotten on this page, I think it would help to be a little more forthcoming in who I am and what the hell this page is supposed to be presenting to you.

My normal internet pseudonym is T/Bot, and I am the sole contributor and developer for this strange experience. Jirard is an ex-software engineer in contact with you, a past coworker, over a strange program he found on his old computer. Your memory is a bit fuzzy on the matter.

Well, that's kind of a lie. Most of my assets and even my entire codebase were made by different people, so a brief shoutout to Magic Nipples and Jane Thrace for being my best helps in keeping this thing rolling! Proper credits will roll out when this project receives its first launch, so don't think I've forgotten about you! And you. You too. In the back. We can all hear you eating Cheetos.

A good portion of my time spent between this article and the last was spent in making the move from Steam Half-Life to Xash3D in an effort to attain some finer quality of life changes, lots of small annoying things that make Steam Half-Life look like a rotting grave in comparison. It might be appropriate to make a proper comparison someday. In the meantime, enjoy some nice rain.

This experience takes you to something that isn't Half-Life again. I've been trying hard to break boundaries and taboos from the usual gameplay loop the base game provides, looking to other game titles for inspiration on what makes videogames actually fun and engaging. How about some EXAMPLES OF GAMEPLAY IMPROVEMENT:

  • Fall damage? Gone (massively de-buffed)!
  • Oxygen while underwater? Struck out!
  • Player speed, acceleration, ground friction? Crank it up, this ain't Xen!
  • What about combat and enemies and shooting and stuff??? Wouldn't you like to know, Poindexter.

That said, there is still a lot of work to be done, mostly on my shoulders as the project's sole level designer. And writer.. god help me. The next biggest hurdle after level work is what I deem 'the art pass'. Custom models and concept art are aspects that have been put on the backburner as I've mostly been focusing on making an actual GAME, rather than making certain assets look pretty. Most of the work has gone into level assets, entities, gameplay tweaks, and general groundwork for something playable, as opposed to viewmodels that AREN'T just Half-Life's stock MP5 and Revolver.

I'll be remaining close with my contributors for advice and assets, but I will say that in the future, real life responsibilities will more than likely inhibit progress these coming months, and I'll do my best to keep the pulse of this project strong while making sure my real life is intact. I want to thank every past, current, and future follower currently reading this for your interest and confusion in this project.

This will be different.

I like to see mods like this that deviate from the typical "Black Mesa disaster" scheme. Keep it up!
