Mod Details

The objective of the Killer App Mod for TRON 2.0 on the PC, is to incorporate elements from TRON 2.0: Killer App for the Xbox platform that were never released for the PC version of TRON 2.0. It also includes other fixes and additions for the game, such as 16:9 and 16:10 Widescreen support. New to Version 1.1a of the mod is compatibility with the Steam version of TRON 2.0, easier installation, v1.1 bug fixes, and restored Multiplayer support in-game on both the CD/DVD and Steam versions.

Installing and using the Mod

TRON 2.0 and the Killer App Mod will work on
Windows 98/Me/2000/XP/Vista/7/8/10 (both 32-bit and 64-bit in all cases).

Video showing easier installation and other features of v1.1a

If you can't get Widescreen working, or have ANY other problem,
visit the above troubleshooting link.

Note that the Killer App Mod allows you to choose Français, Deutsch, Italiano, and Español text for use in the game, after you install the Unofficial v1.042 Patch. In other words: if you download and install the Unofficial Patch, you can later change the language from English. There is really no reason to use the Official Patch any more, on the CD/DVD Retail version of TRON 2.0.

If you want to use the User Error Single Player expansion in widescreen,
you must download and install it after you install the Killer App Mod.

Also note that if you want to use Xistence's Ancient Disc Mod, you must download and install it first before you install the Killer App Mod.

When using Single Player with the Killer App Mod, older saved games will not work and loading them will cause the game to crash. You must either disable the mod to load old saved games, or start a new game. Since the mod fixes a few issues and adds some things: you will probably want to enjoy the new improved experience in Single Player from the beginning, anyway.

When using Multiplayer with the mod, EVERYONE must be using the mod in order to access the new features when playing together. This inculdes the host (server) and all players (clients). This new Version 1.1a of the mod is not compatible in Multiplayer with the older versions. (If you have an old version, you must uninstall it first.)

If you try to join a Multiplayer server not running the mod, you will be kicked off and the game will let you know why. If you cannot find any servers running the mod at the time that you want to play online, the mod can be completely disabled to allow you to play with others who do not have it.

If there are no servers running the mod: you will need to contact the server operators and request that they start using the Killer App Mod, or host your own server.

Killer App Mod v1.2 trailer demoing Single Player fixes

Eight levels in roughly 28 minutes. This second trailer showcases more of the fixes to the Single Player levels of TRON 2.0, via the upcoming Killer App Mod v1.2. (Some have been shown in previous trailers, but most are new.)

These are Single Player issues I've personally noticed, or had pointed out to me. (Me being team member TronFAQ. Some pointed out by Mister Julius. Thanks!) But I'm sure I've still missed a few.

The original plan was to do two trailers demoing all the Single Player fixes. But there's too much to fit into only two, and yet still keep them at a "reasonable" length. So there's going to be at least one more, after this second one.

You can see the first Single Player fixes trailer here.

One of the mandates of Killer App Mod v1.2 has always been to fix or enhance the Single Player campaign, a goal partly inspired by the similar (in purpose) System Shock 2 Community Patch (SCP).

Time stamps for notable changes and fixes:

Prisoner Bin level

  • 00:36 - Enhancement to opening cutscene for 16:9 aspect ratio (the actual player model not being visible while an "actor" version of Jet is doing the cutscene)
  • 02:30 - Empty prisoner cells can now be opened with permissions cheat
  • 03:05 - Encryption keys are difficult to destroy with certain weapons, this has been fixed (for the sake of Gold cheat users)
  • 05:03 - Added sound effect for force field (which was missing)
  • 05:59 - Fixed Exit Port beam missing beam splash and sound effects, textures in "socket" behind it dark and not panning

Transport Station level

  • 06:26 - Fixed Exit Port beam not having beam splash or sound effect
  • 06:53 - Fixed Exit Port textures in "socket" behind it being misaligned and not panning
  • 08:09 - Switches at energy bridge now work for permissions cheat users, and the switches more accurately reflect their current status
  • 10:46 - Fixed Mooring App switches not making any sounds, and added objective completion message when boarding transport

Primary Digitizing level

  • 11:49 - Fixed green light "leaking" into area where it shouldn't be visible
  • 12:17 - Fixed switches controlling bulkhead door (right before Ma3a) not being in sync with each other
  • 13:04 - Fixed Ma3a referring to the player as "Jet" too early (instead of "Alan Two")

Ma3a should not be saying "Jet" when he frees her from her dock, and in fact she goes back to saying "Alan Two" in a cutscene right after this. It's not until the next level that Jet asks Ma3a to refer to him by his real name, instead of his User name. From that point on, Ma3a then calls him "Jet".

  • 13:17 - Fixed missing build point and objective notifications when Exit Port is reached
  • 13:33 - Fixed missing Exit Port base and beam activation sound happening too early

Alan's Desktop PC level

  • 13:53 - Enhancements to video archive cutscene for 16:9 aspect ratio (Popoff is more visible at start, she doesn't "pop in" when she begins moving, and camera pans instead of "jumping")
  • 15:58 - Second I/O Node can no longer be interacted with, and task list hint about where to go added

Players often get stuck on this level, when Ma3a says "activate the I/O Node". There's an I/O Node right there in front of them both, but it doesn't respond when used (and the player doesn't normally have the permissions needed to use it).

There's another I/O Node on the opposite side of the COM Port puzzle area. This first one, is the one that's meant to be used. In order to reduce confusion: the second I/O Node can no longer be interacted with at all, and it doesn't show that you need missing permissions any more. This is to tip off the player that this I/O Node is useless. A hint about needing to use the I/O Node by the "COM Port configuration panel" has also been added to Jet's task list.

Why not remove the I/O Node completely? (Which is what the Xbox version of TRON 2.0 did.) Or how about allowing the player to use either one? The latter was something I considered doing, but changed my mind.

I didn't do either, because: when you're using the first I/O Node, and Ma3a is communicating with you, how is she doing it? That's right, she's using that second "useless" I/O Node. Removing it or letting the player use it makes no narrative sense.

  • 16:27 - Silenced distracting beam sounds during I/O Node use, and restored unused Archive Stack help file
  • 17:45 - Restored unused Power Router help file and created artwork for it (since it was missing)
  • 18:24 - Fixed missing build point and objective notifications on exiting level, sound effect missing, beam splash being too opaque

Power Regulator level

  • 18:44 - Enhancements to video archive cutscene for 16:9 aspect ratio (Popoff faces right way from start, she and DataWraith trainees don't "jump", Crown more visible during camera zoom, camera movement more accurately syncs with sound effects)
  • 19:55 - Fixed permissions cheat users being able to activate useless switch (now disabled), missing force field sound added
  • 20:33 - Fixed Escher-like twisted geometry
  • 21:03 - Program NPC now waits to activate bridge

After players eliminate a swarm of ICPs, a Program NPC would activate a bridge leading to the exit. The problem is that it's easy for players to not witness this happening. So they suddenly see the bridge and wonder how it got there. The Program now waits until the player talks to him, before he activates the bridge.

Power Oculus level

  • 22:07 - Fixed textures on Exit Port columns being too dark to see
  • 23:30 - Fixed sign above Protocol Socket not displaying info when reticle is placed over it
  • 23:36 - Fixed ICPs' energy armor persisting after being de-rezzed

Main Processing Core level

  • 24:18 - Fixed minor issues caused by using permissions cheat on force field switch
  • 25:44 - Fixed permission in Archive Bin not costing energy

Main Power Pipeline level

  • 26:02 - Added missing objective completion message after I/O Node conversation
  • 27:12 - Fixed missing mission failure message (if you don't close all surge suppression circuits in time)

You can also check out other new features in v1.2, from an earlier news post.

Usually, it takes a minute before Windows completely purges everything associated with a process from memory. So if you wait a bit after quitting TRON 2.0, that message will likely go away.

Is there a way to fix aspect ratio of the cutscenes with resolutions other than 4:3? Either in 1.1a or (hopefully then) in the upcoming 1.2?

TronFAQ

It seems you've already found the solution, based on another comment you left. But I wanted to explain what likely happened.

At this time, you can't change the resolution in-game on the Options > Display screen, if you want to use any resolution that isn't 4:3 aspect ratio. The in-game options screen only allows 4:3 resolutions to be selected. If you visit that screen, it will automatically revert your resolution to one using a 4:3 aspect ratio. This will be remedied in v1.2 of the Killer App Mod.

In the meantime, if you click the Display button on the TRON 2.0 launcher, it has been modified to allow selecting non-4:3 resolutions. So you don't need to edit the display.cfg file.

Depending on what aspect ratio you selected when installing the mod, the appropriate FOV will be applied for that aspect ratio: on menu screens, in the first-person environment, and in cutscenes. There's no need to adjust FOVs manually. However, you cannot change aspect ratios after installation of the mod. (Wanting to change the aspect ratio will require a re-install of the mod, selecting that different ratio during installation.)

I was referring to the cutscenes, not the game itself. The cutscenes are stretched with a non-4:3 aspect ratio, unless there is an additional fix to address this as well.

Cutscenes not being stretched is a key feature of the mod. If you indicated you wanted a non-4:3 aspect ratio during installation, the cutscenes' FOV should be adjusted for that aspect ratio. Cutscenes should not be stretched. (Unless the resolution selected after installation isn't in the aspect ratio that was selected during installation.)

Can you click the Custom button on the TRON 2.0 game launcher, and confirm that there's an X beside the word "Retail"? If not, the mod isn't fully enabled.

Yes, Custom is marked with "X".

It looks like this:
I.postimg.cc

I'm using 1920x1200, and chose that during the mod's installation process, as well (just reinstalled the mod).

P.S. If I set a custom FOV, it would start stretching the cutscenes again, wouldn't it? I used to have 103 / 77, but right now I haven't added the launch options yet since I just reinstalled the mod.

The method you're using to adjust FOVs doesn't work for cutscenes. It has no effect on them. Cutscene FOVs can only be adjusted by modding the game.

The "stretching" you've been referring to must be the fisheye distortion that can appear near the edges of the screen. This cannot be helped, unfortunately.

Based on your screenshot, the FOV adjustment is in effect and correct for your resolution and aspect ratio. Otherwise, the cutscene would look like this (Jet character model stretched, and less can be seen at the sides):
Abload.de

I see. In that case the original cutscenes would have been somewhat stretched already. Since I'd say it should look something like this:
I.postimg.cc

On another note, is there a way to disable the bloom effect?

Reply Good karma Bad karma+1 vote
TronFAQ Creator
TronFAQ

That particular cutscene in the original, unmodded game at 1024x768 and 4:3 aspect ratio looks like this:
Abload.de

Here's your (downsized) 1920x1200 16:10 screenshot with the mod active:
I.postimg.cc

Proportionally, I'd say the mod's cutscene in 16:10 aspect ratio is spot-on compared to the original 4:3.

To reduce or eliminate bloom, open autoexec.cfg in a text editor and look for "screenglowfiltersize". Adjust the number to your liking.

Exacly my point, to me the original cutscenes already looked stretched somewhat horizontally, not only because of the fisheye effect of large FOVs, which is not to say the mod doesn't work as intended, because it would have been a mistake on the part of Monolith. If the stretching is consistent across the scenes, that could be fixed as well with some adjustment. It's not too dramatic though.

Edit: I set screenglowfiltersize to 2, because "0" leads to some nasty pixelated artifacts in the cutscenes apparently. There is also "screenglowenable" which turns itself back to "1", along with other screenglow options. Can they be adjusted as well? thx

Edit 2:
I'm using Tron 2.0 with ReShade to improve the look even further. See screenshot comparison:

Right, you had me puzzled at first because I thought you were saying the mod wasn't working correctly. Now I know you meant that you feel the proportions of the vanilla, original 4:3 cutscene (at least in that specific shot) aren't correct to begin with.

I've tried modifying other glow options, and they all had either similar, or even undesirable, effects. If you want to turn off glow completely, because you'd like to use your own custom shader: I'd just use the in-game option under Options > Performance > Display > Enable screen glow to "Off".

I'm usually not a fan of custom shaders, but I'll admit yours does look good. :)

Thanks! :-) To me, ReShade is more about tweaking, optimizing graphics than putting on a thick layer of dramatic effects.
