Originals. (I am thinking specifically of Half-Life here.)

Also, "sequels" is spelled with an e, not an a. Sequels can be as good as the original but it's more common that they aren't.

Seriously? You think the original Half-Life was better than HL2, Ep1, and Ep2? I voted for sequels. Actually, when making my vote on this poll, I was thinking about the Half-Life series in particular. HL1 was awesome, HL2 was even better, Ep1 was even better, and Ep2 has been the best so far. I understand that HL1 basically defined the FPS genre, and I'd agree with you if we were taking nostalgia into account, but otherwise, HL1 can't even begin to compare to the sequels.

Father of FPS is clearly Doom, NOT HL1.

Doom HAS to be the grandfather of FPSs - it was the first game that had shotgun bind to number 3 - almost every fps since doom has a shotgun tied to number 3! ;)

But HL1 was one of the very few games that live up to Doom's standards. That's just my opinion, of course. Mainly the only good thing about HL2 is the graphics and one of the best Physics engines known. For gameplay, HL is better than HL2.

Originals. Sequels tend to ruin it. And saying HL2 has one of the best physics engines is a bit far fetched. It's not that great at all. I'd definitely not wanna use it even if I would get payed.

hl2 is not a physics engine. Its a game that uses the best physics engine (Havoc)

The SOURCE engine(HL2's engine) is a HEAVILY modified Havok engine.

I've actually bound shotgun in Doom to 4 and supershotgun to 5.. 1 is fist, 2 is chainsaw, 3 is pistol, 4 and 5 you know already, 6 is minigun (chaingun), 7 is rocket launcher, 8 is plasma gun and 9 is BFG9000!

Of course this only works in Doom ports that allow me to bind each weapon to a key...

Well, I'm not sure if my favourite game is a sequel, because I like the first one just as much as the sequels. Yea the favourite is Doom and it's sequels in case you didn't know that already.

Obviously. I meant to edit my post to say that HL1 was one of the pioneers of the genre, but 5 mins had already passed. I didn't mean that HL1 was THE first fps.

technically Wolf3D was the "father of the fps genre", since it was the FIRST fps game to really become popular. It openned peoples eyes to the potential of FPS. AND the Doom engine would never have existed without Wolf3D as a building block.

In its time, HL1 was both better, more innovative, and more important to the FPS genre than was HL2. HL2 lived up to HL1 in every way, and certainly delivered 100%, but the original Half-Life completely redefined singleplayer FPS. You have to think about questions like this in context of the time the game came out. Obviously HL2 is a more compelling experience than HL today, because it's not as old.

Also, Doom is great, but the true grandfather of FPS is Wolf3d. (ninja edit: +1 karma to NCC-1701 :P )

Three quarters of sequels are way worser than the original. HL2 is a nice FPS and I would like it if it would be in a different universe. But HL1 has better gameplay, and mainly better STORY. The same aplies for many other games as well.

The last one quarter (good sequels) are titles that try to complement the original, not to replace it. Good examples of these are Doom 2 or System Shock 2.

Many modern games (especially sequels) are mostly just about graphics and physics. But these are not what oldschool players need, they need GAMEPLAY and STORY. And that's the reason why we have ModDB :D

The main reason why HL1 redefined FPS genre is because it was actually the first to have complex storytelling. It was no mere "someone is attacking, let's kill em!". Alien invasion, army trying to cover it up, Gman, a guy in a labcoat as hero(it's important, he has more brains than muscle - every other FPS hero before that was a guy with more muscles than brains - Youtube.com) and puzzles.

HL2 did it again: but this time by setting many standards. Proper physics system, beautiful graphics at it's time and MOST importantly: realistic characters with uncomparable expressions. These days games rarely come out with characters that just move its mouths randomly while speaking and they wave their arms (sounds funny, heheh, but I do hope you get what I mean) and interact with surroundings.

Doom Was the first PC game I played, on a old windows 3.1 box.....man that was ages ago, I still have my Win 3.1 Floppy set still, its like 30 something floppy's :P. But I consider Doom to be a starting point of modern FPS's, the original doom did not even use the mouse, I remember when I played Hexen 2 at a friends house, trying to use the mouse AND board at the same time I was like "Dude... this is weird, this whole mouse thing will never catch on". HL1 though did redefine the FPS genre, but it redefined a genre created by Doom and Wolfenstien Series before it.

the half-life 1's story, the way that you fight, it's clearly that half-life 1 is THE BEST game of all time

The best thing about the original Half-Life is how frantic it is - Valve really put the old motto, "Run. Think. Shoot. Live." in effect with that game. The entire game from start to end is just a massive thriller, the player is forced to be adaptive and think on their feet. There's never any safety. By comparison, Half-Life 2 is just excessive with its narrative and character development. Not saying that's a bad thing, but as far as the two go, I greatly prefer the intense and resolute feeling of the original.

Oh, and I'd consider Wolfenstein 3D the grandfather of FPSes. Doom is the father. Half-Life is the Son and Holy Ghost. :P

Some sequels do suck, others add features that enhance the game play, and i think it's about 50/50 with the number of crappy sequels vs. number of good sequels.

Red Alert 1 is probably my favourite C&C sequel, C&C 1 I played loads, can never get passed like the 5th level lol, but when I saw C&C 2 Red Alert I was like, woah, Snow!? Dogs!? Combine Harvesters that look feasible!?
I wanted that game so bad as a 6 year old (Damn I only just realised how young I was when I played C&C, god damn).

Team Fortress 1 to Team Fortress Classic to Team Fortress 2 is a really good use of sequels.
Invent the genre, improve it, re-write it.

Sometimes sequels can be really awesome, even better than the original game! :)
But other times they can be a rushed crap, from the wish of the developers to make more money from a game that did very good! :|

Why hate on this comment? Most of you people probably haven't played the first two Fallouts. Fallout 3 is not THAT bad, but it's certainly missing something that was present in the old Fallouts.

I think SOME of the best sequels have to be TF2, HL2 and MW2. But BFBC2, RA3 and C&C 3 are also great sequels. Originals usually rock most though.
