Post news Report article RSS Feed Comment history and download issues

We've implemented a way to view your commenting history and an explanation of recent download issues.

Posted by INtense! on Nov 14th, 2012

We've made quite a few changes to our commenting system in recent times, with one of the more major ones recently being deployed. For members this is the ability to view your commenting history, which should help you see the discussion you have participated in, and more importantly where you posted that comment. This we hope will allow you to find old images / mods / games you've posted on but forgotten about. For example here is my comment history.

A more radical change we are also experimenting with, is the ability for guests to comment. This we hope will lead to an increase in discussion on the site between developers and fans - because we believe the most important service we can provide is a way for you to get feedback when posting news, images and videos on the site. To stop spam and trolling, all guest comments are policed by you the members and guest comments are not shown until you have approved them. So everytime you vote a guest comment up or down, you are basically allowing (or disallowing) that person to comment - so use your power wisely. And please join in the discussion on all of the news flowing through ModDB, IndieDB and SlideDB - because nothing makes us happier than seeing developers share their hard work and having you discuss and critque it.

Finally some bad news. At the moment GameFront helps us mirror and host most of the files on the site. They recently changed their download policy, which prevents users from the following countries from downloading files:

  • Argentina
  • Mexico
  • Chile
  • Spain
  • Thailand
  • Poland
  • Colombia
  • Brazil
  • France
  • Venezuela
  • Italy
  • Peru
  • Uruguay
  • Malaysia
  • Turkey
  • Indonesia
  • India
  • Ecuador
  • Costa Rica
  • Honduras
  • Hungary
  • Philippines
  • Portugal
  • Romania
  • Russian Federation
  • Serbia
  • Singapore
  • Sweden
  • Japan

The net effect of this has been our mirrors getting overloaded with requests and simply being unable to keep up with the demand. It is difficult for us to fix this, as providing another 2gigabit of bandwidth for downloads is quite expensive and requires significant architecture. We are in the process of adding more mirrors and investigating what we can do, but we encourage you to be patient when downloading, and remember that registered members are given priority access over guests on the site. So join today if you haven't already.

Great new feature. I like the idea of going back and keeping track of my comments.

I demand a "hide" option in the profile settings for the comments. I don't want everyone being able to browse through them. At least restrict it for registered members.

comments posted in private groups will not be shown. You can also make your profile totally private or viewable by friends only, is that what you want?

I think what he meant is that he don't mind other people seeing his profile but he doesn't want people seeing his comment history.

I am not against the feature as a whole, I just personally don't like the idea of others being able to view everything I wrote. If possible make it optional.

Yes I could make my profile private but thats total restriction for everyone who ain't my friend which is too much.

Well do what you see fit, would be nice if it was optional, I will get over it anyway but its freaky.

@Hijacker exactly.

Amen to this. When I post a news item with screenshots and a download related comments end up on the images, the download the news item and mod profile.

It would make it much easier to respond to comments if I only had to visit one place to track these comments.

The Gamefront/Filefront DL policy better be changed before **** happens.

Indeed, they basiclly banned half of the world from posting.

I guess the main "reason" for this was the high rate of piracy and cybercrime in the mentioned countries. Except for Japan and Singapore which makes me wonder why them...

Actually the countries are primarily non-english speaking + high traffic places.

So my guess is that Gamefront is unable to sell advertising in places like Russia, France, Japan etc and due to the high cost of providing bandwidth have decided to focus on the countries where they can.

Whilst it is frustrating - having run download servers ourselves it is expensive and not easy

I noticed a bug.

The "videos" section of the profile is gone if you have most of the links to the site available.
(only happens if it's your profile.)

Just a heads up, Gamefront added Indonesia to their "if you live there... well that's just too bad" list.
In addition to being swarming with trackers, ads, and assorted annoyances, now Gamefront filters out users because of where they live >:I

I'm very glad that ModDB's comment system got an upgrade. Comment history does indeed make a big change in favor.
There's an issue I'd like to see addressed though. In heavily commented mods (like this one ) often there are several replies to a comment which is on the following page, leading to confuse situations.

I am from one of that 'blocked" countries. (Blocked, like some pirates or worse ... IMHO it sounds like some stigmatization, due to the said bandwidth problem, i 'm from a relatively small country)

I've read the message, and I joined.

I tried to download at least 5-10 mods/maps etc. to my favorite games from my favorite modders, Again and again and again.

And nothing happened, the same message ("not available via any mirrors") continues to display to me, despite the logged status ...

Dear ModDB Why did you do that with us, the excluded nations?
