The Dark Times (and its successor, Dark Times II: Rising Son) is a mod focused on delivering a solid singleplayer experience in a traditionally multiplayer game, Star Wars Battlefront II.

The mod draws from the time period before and during the beginning of the Galactic Civil War. Several prominent characters from the movies as well as the expanded universe show up as one of over 20 new heroes added to the game - each hero supported by a special "hero support" unit.

While the mod of course supports multiplayer (and in fact has some scripted missions specifically for multiplayer), the majority of the content in the mod is designed with the intent to diversify the singleplayer experience - which is why there is a focus on randomization. A number of new game modes have also been added, including the popular "wave mode."

All right, gang! Straight from a galaxy far, far away to your PC comes Dark Times II: Rising Son.
Rising Son is the successor to the original Dark Times mod - it's not really a sequel, but it's much more than just a small version change. The original Dark Times mod was a mod designed to add some variable aspects to the game along with several changes made to enhance the singleplayer experience. Rising Son duplicates and elaborates - all the original content is there with many new features added to the mix.

Rising Son has all the random heroes and units of the original Dark Times increased by more than twofold, and spread across two distinct (but randomly chosen!) time periods. Rising Son, in addition to increasing the number of single-player wave modes, has several new game modes added - Control mode, V.I.P. mode, Space mode... and more! Rising Son adds a 16-mission single-player semi-linear campaign. Rising Son adds 16 new maps, the majority of which load in random environments each time you play.

Need more information? Be sure to check out the previous news posts, which have covered nearly every feature of the mod in detail.

Also, keep in mind that the download will have several pieces of helpful documentation, should you have any questions. Enjoy!

Both sets of sides are in the Galactic Civil War time period - there's the "pre-Episode-IV" sides (the militia/501st-stormtroopers) and the "Episode IV-V" sides (the Tantive IV/white stormtroopers). The two time periods are mostly in place to control the heroes and special units that appear and keep them logically consistent.

"Polus: Hidden Caverns" is a mod map that I didn't make. I'm pretty sure an earlier comment mentioned that I've got a Dark Trooper phase 1 as a unit (which I do), and then someone mentioned that they thought I had a phase 2 or 3 (which I don't). Someone then mentioned that you could find a phase 3 Dark Trooper on another map, the Polus map mentioned. I wouldn't get too excited - that map just has an upscaled version of the stock Dark Trooper.

You probably ought to verify whether and where the crash happened (/happens repeatedly). You may also want to confirm that neither of you has modified the stock sides of the game, as that can cause incompatibility issues online (unrelated to this mod).

I loved the campaign in this mod. The class system was greatly improved by having different special classes on different maps. My only problem with this mod is when you have to escort the Mon Cal engineers on the Mon Cal level, they will kill each other if you have FF on.

My Absolute Favorite part of this mod is the Mon Calamari Space map, I have oodles of fun on that map. I recommend playing it with a Flight sim joy stick (I use the Logitech Attack3).
