The Dark Times (and its successor, Dark Times II: Rising Son) is a mod focused on delivering a solid singleplayer experience in a traditionally multiplayer game, Star Wars Battlefront II.

The mod draws from the time period before and during the beginning of the Galactic Civil War. Several prominent characters from the movies as well as the expanded universe show up as one of over 20 new heroes added to the game - each hero supported by a special "hero support" unit.

While the mod of course supports multiplayer (and in fact has some scripted missions specifically for multiplayer), the majority of the content in the mod is designed with the intent to diversify the singleplayer experience - which is why there is a focus on randomization. A number of new game modes have also been added, including the popular "wave mode."

All right, gang! Straight from a galaxy far, far away to your PC comes Dark Times II: Rising Son.
Rising Son is the successor to the original Dark Times mod - it's not really a sequel, but it's much more than just a small version change. The original Dark Times mod was a mod designed to add some variable aspects to the game along with several changes made to enhance the singleplayer experience. Rising Son duplicates and elaborates - all the original content is there with many new features added to the mix.

Rising Son has all the random heroes and units of the original Dark Times increased by more than twofold, and spread across two distinct (but randomly chosen!) time periods. Rising Son, in addition to increasing the number of single-player wave modes, has several new game modes added - Control mode, V.I.P. mode, Space mode... and more! Rising Son adds a 16-mission single-player semi-linear campaign. Rising Son adds 16 new maps, the majority of which load in random environments each time you play.

Need more information? Be sure to check out the previous news posts, which have covered nearly every feature of the mod in detail.

Also, keep in mind that the download will have several pieces of helpful documentation, should you have any questions. Enjoy!

Will there be any more updates? I know I may look like an idiot asking since the last update was six years ago, but I'm just hoping.

I like this but its hard as **** . Dude the first mission is a bitch ...infinite spawning enemy and you have to get through the objectives with a handfull of laser cannon fodder who all die within the first 5 to 10 mins... i mean just how the hell can u do this mission without getting raped?

They're hard by design, made for experienced players of the stock game. I'd encourage you to get familiar with the classes and maps in Instant Action, and feel free to buy the bonuses you need for the campaign.

If you need further "how do I get through this," I did record a playthrough of the whole campaign here:

Thankyou ! i didnt even realize i could afford those units..which proved invaluable to the mission ...

On my first re attempt i used the technician to capture the walker as the video revealed, but i found my self still ending up alone in the fight ..right at the last objective ..just me in my walker against constant waves of spawning enemies ....

dammit i spent over an hour in a cycle of shooting ..repairing ...jump out for 5 seconds an try cap the point ... was blown out after spending 2 hours or more trying my best to progress through this most interesting campaign

but then i realized i could make things a bit less harsh if i turned the friendly fire OFF

I have now completed the first mission

One "mistake" (which is probably the wrong word) I see a lot of people make in playthroughs of this and other similar things is that they stop to kill every enemy. Not worth it! Your reinforcements increase when you accomplish objectives, but if you wait too long to get them done, you'll drain your reinforcements quickly and get caught in a spiral of not having enough to get the objectives complete.

You should be able to complete most objectives pretty quickly if you grab a pair of AI followers to tag along (I never did that in the recorded video, because it would have slowed down my progress, but I know the missions very well). Just keep moving!

Side note: If you get familiar with all the purchaseable units - they show up as the hero support units in Instant Action - you'll know precisely what you want to buy and when. Of the two units you can buy from the start, the technician is actually a much harder choice to play with, because while he is very useful in a couple maps, he's not as all-around good as the infiltrator unit.
