Shows her age...then gets a massive refit that shows you can always teach an old dog new tricks.

Description

The USS Excelsior NX-2000 was developed and constructed throughout the 2280s as 'The Great Experiment' - serving as a test-bed for a number of experimental Federation technologies, most notably the Federation's first serious attempt to develop a functioning Transwarp Drive.

Although the incredulity of more traditional Starfleet engineers proved well-founded regarding the feasibility of transwarp, the Excelsior herself proved to be an exceptionally capable craft, and was officially commissioned as the NCC-2000 in the early 2290s. Since then, the Excelsior-class has served with distinction as one of Starfleet's most successful starships, taking on front-line duties alongside newer, more advanced designs. Only now, more than 80 years since her initial launch, is the Excelsior-class starting to show her age.
