Hello,

After buying a spas-12 which is my favourite anti mutant weapon, i quickly found out that there are some horrible effects tacked onto this glorious instrument of death, and i would be very grateful if anyone could help me fix the spas-12 - even though im sure the same fixes could be applied to every other instrument of death which has been treated with the same blur/smoke effects.

Now, I love the Misery mod, it makes the game a real challenge and not a walk in the park, nothing comes close to Misery in terms of enjoyment, but there is a screen blurring effect and some smoke effect which blocks your vision and makes target acquisition and elimination a huge problem, i've found the fix to remove the blurring effect and i've successfully applied it to every shotgun in-game however i'm still stuck trying to figure out how to remove the smoke effect as it lingers in the middle of the screen way too long and the smoke texture quality is really bad with little to no use of the alpha channel.

For those who don't know what the alpha channel is, it's basically an extra layer to an image, a set of instructions for the game engine. With the use of an alpha layer you can control the transparency of textures ingame, every scope texture should have an alpha layer, with open scopes using the alpha layer to keep your peripheral vision clear, and with closed scopes the alpha layer is used to block your peripheral vision to create a sense of increased immersion as if you were looking into the lens of a rifle scope like the PSO-1.

I've played a previous version of the Misery mod for CoP and i've even played the Misery mod for SoC and in my experiences before none of the shotguns were like this.

If anyone could be so kind to help me remove the smoke effects, i will gift you a copy of Company of Heroes on steam with two expansion dlcs titled Tales of Valor, and Opposing Fronts, just as an exta thank you :)

Taking a quick look at it now. I can't seem to find the file referenced in gamedata\configs\weapons\w_spas12.ltx in either my unpacked dir or from misery...strange. I was going to lower the alpha value of it but guess I can't heh.

Anyways the quick and dirty way to get rid of the smoke is to open up w_spas12.ltx and go down to the line that says:

smoke_particles = amik\weapons\smoke_particles\smoke_particles_pump_01

Simply put a ; infront of that line so it looks like this:

;smoke_particles = amik\weapons\smoke_particles\smoke_particles_pump_01

That will remove the smoke from that weapon. You would also need to add a ; to the same lines for any of the other weapons you want to remove the smoke for.

I already have CoH :P Don't worry about it. Let me know if you have trouble editing the file.

I'm not sure, but you probably need to replace the value after the equals sign with one less offensive to you that already exists in game. Commenting out the whole line might cause issues. Part of the reasoning for the smoke is presumed shortage of smokeless powder for reloads and use of homemade black powder. I don't think the Saiga 12K does it. Try replacing existing smoke with weapons\generic_shoot_00. Remember, any file you change in your main weapons directory needs to also be changed in your class diversity folder for your class if you want to play again with same changes :D Make your change in front (to the left) of your original values followed by a semicolon (;) to leave the original value as a comment in case you don't remember or wish to change back. This is especially helpful when changing numbers up or down to verify effect.

I tested it in game already to make sure it wouldn't crash. Seemed to work just fine.

Good to know, replacing value will work for sure with no unanticipated side-effects down the line. Actually copying the new value and renaming it the original value's name would change every weapon using that smoke type to no smoke without having to edit every file.

The spas-12 has a flame particle effect that is commented out, i'm going to comment out the smoke particle and remove the ; from the flame effect, to see if anything juicy happens.

Edit:

Now this is how the spas-12 should be!!!!!!! The edit works beautifully, whoever removed the flame effect needs to be slapped with a wet kipper!

Thank you for mentioning about the class diversity folder edit Jasper34!

Spas-12 fixed!

Enjoy :D one of the best things about xray is you can highly customize your own version. Read my last to see how you can make all the weapons the same without changing each one after you find what you prefer.

Use notepad++ to edit. It's free and you will love it. When you open it again, every file you have already edited is in it's own tab so you don't have to find them again.

I've always used Notepad++ :P it's a must have least you want to drive yourself insane by having formats ruined in notepad!

I did read your post and you slightly confused me with the smoke edit. I've not seen and tried many of the other weapons like the saiga or any special shotties etc, I'm a simple man who likes the spas-12, L85, and the SVD, so i think for now this simple edit to the spas-12 will be fine for me as it's my favourite boomstick in-game.

Unless there is an AA-12 with HE rounds i've not found yet :)

The Saiga has no smoke I recall. If you use it's effect on one weapon, you would have no smoke on that weapon. If you replace the undesired effect smoke_particles_pump_01 with weapons\generic_shoot_00 it would give you no smoke on that weapon. If you replace the pump_01 effect by renaming the file pump_01cya and make a copy of shoot_00, rename the copy pump_01 then every weapon using that effect will have no smoke. If you have a favorite weapon you use every time, editing just the one will certainly do. Just copy that edited file over the one in your class_diversity folder so when you play again you don't have to re-edit.
