The Federal Commonwealth of Earth is a proud organization with roots from back when the planet was divided. It still is, but not officially. Spearheaded by a man who is feared by many and loved by few, the FCE has a reputation sketchy at best. The organization is active in aspects which infringe on several global laws, but due to the nature of the man who leads them, few dare to challenge or question the course the FCE has chosen. Upon the arrival of the fleet to the Mars base, generals and scientists alike could not grasp the situation, and little did they realize that a group, very aware of what was going on, would soon follow.

The recent events on the Martian base are not unwelcome to the man in charge. They were anticipated. He has read the book many times, but this particular time something has changed fundamentally, and the book is about to be rewritten. The man in charge was soon to realize that he is not the only author. He needs the man in the box. He needs the man on Phobos.

We are trying something a little different with the story for Doom 3: Phobos. In most games, the story revolves around the player character. The problem in the case of first person shooters is that the main character rarely talks, emotes or acts in any way.

The basic idea of this is to avoid giving the player character a preset array of values, so that the players will be more inclined to feel that they themselves are main characters. This is a problem because the story can’t really go anywhere for the player character. He will never be part of the world on the same terms that all the other characters are, and when the focus of the story is on a character that can’t really be fed emotions or conversation; you more often than not end up with a very loose and uncommitted story.

In Doom 3: Phobos, the focus of the story will not be on the player character. We have shifted the role of main character to someone who will actually be able to act, speak and emote. This character will be in the center of every aspect of the game, story, physical location and so forth. We will see much of the story unfolding through his eyes and ears. The player character will take a central part in the action, but the game world doesn’t revolve around him, which is very different from most modern shooters.

The game basically takes off where Doom 3 ended, and before Resurrection of Evil starts. You will be playing a different character than you did in both Doom 3 and Resurrection of Evil. The new player character is part of the fleet that arrives on Mars at the end of Doom 3. It turns out they are not the only group.

It has finally come down to Hell. One can't help to feel that Hell is the most sought after piece of Phobos. The Hell portion of Doom3 was criminally short for most people's tastes. I myself however found it to be rather dull the first time around. It actually ended up feeling like several maps instead of simply just one. While I have come to appreciate that one map a whole lot more over the years, I still think it was a bit of a failure.
So, what does that mean for the Hell of Phobos? Well to begin with. Colors are a more prominent member of Hell in Phobos. Still not to the level of the original Doom mind you. After all we are trying to stay true to the source. But it will be a lot more varied and vivid than the caves and plateaus you explored in Doom3.

A lot of the level design for hell stems from original Doom level design principals. While we're not trying to mimic the game play of Doom, since we find that pointless. We are doing our very best to rival the quality and variety of it, and carry over things that we think fit well with the game we are making.
The story will be cut down for this episode as well. The story will keep on until the end of course, but since being in Hell is mostly about getting out. Survival will be the No.1 component. You expect to get hell, and you will get it.

Building Hell.
Hell is naturally a lot more organic than the cold steel of Mars and Phobos space bases. This means we have to work on a drastically different way for most of the time. A major component of the world is made up of models instead of the commonly used brushes and patch meshes common to the Quake-Doom3 engines. Most of it can simply be built using low polygon models, but anything that is of special character needs extra work in getting the proper fitted normalmaps. For instance, every demonic face needs a hi and low polygon mesh to complete the process. This is naturally, not a process that is limited to Hell alone. The other episodes will have these things too, sometimes the regular level editing capabilities just isn't enough. But not nearly at the same degree.

It's a shame they didn't use the Arachnotron in the official release of Doom3 as the Trite didn't quite cut it as a scary spider.

But if the Arachnotron is making a return, does that mean we'll see the bigger brother, the Master Mind ?
