As part of their regular sale rotation, GOG has kicked off their "strategy week" which has some heavy-hitting, classic strategy games on sale, as well as some new contenders. RTS and strategy have a historical basis in modding support and are some of the most moddable games around, so here's our picks for five games from the sale and a mod for each!
Game: Close Combat: Invasion Normandy: £2.69 GBP/$2.99 USD
Mod: Close Combat V Ebro Mod
WW2 games are a popular period among strategy fans, and mods transferring RTS games into this setting are also rather common - but how common is a mod changing a WW2 game into a focus on another conflict instead? That's the case for this mod, which tells a story of a conflict in Western Europe in 1938, a year before the breakout of the second world war. It's a smart way to still stay period appropriate with the available assets whilst giving a new scenario for players to try out.
With some completely revamped units, new leader upgrades, spellbook makeovers and some balance changes, this mod should keep things fresh and exciting. Many difficulty changes have been made to balance the game in an alternative way, added features to major characters keep the level up loop rewarding, and a few dozen factions-specific changes all add to the game and create a new experience in the way only a dedicated fan can properly manage.
The Infinite War has escalated into an Eternal Conflict. Pick your faction and rejoin the battle with new units and technologies to unleash upon your galactic foes. Eat their lunch! It's no secret some preferred the original Supreme Commander to its sequel (in an all-too-common tale of franchises reinventing themselves a bit too much over time), but with a decent bit of modding support, any concerns can be cleared up provided you're committed enough, and Eternal Conflict is one way fans hoping for more can make good on that desire.
Operation Just Cause is a mod for the Real Time Strategy Game Close Combat: A Bridge Too Far, based on the real life Operation Just Cause. Giving players the ability to fight as either the US Armed Forces or the Panamanian Defense Force (PDF) and its paramilitary elements. Players can relive the short December 1989 conflict in Panama, by playing the Grand Campaign or can play smaller areas via operations or single battles.
This mod will add new units to your Supreme Commander Forged Alliance game. This mod can be played in both single player and multiplayer, and has support for popular community mods like Sorian AI which improve the capability of AI opponents. Large scale battles are the bread and butter of Supreme Commander and even in the base game, hours-long games featuring thousands of units played at gigantic scale are commonplace. When you add mods like Total Mayhem into the equation, with new experimentals, units, and structures, the tactics go through the roof!
There's our picks for five games from GOG's Strategy Week sale and mods for 'em! These being some classic RTS titles means there's plenty of history here, so what other mods do you like for these tactical testing grounds? Let us know in the comments below!
