Overview

HEAT is a team-play oriented tactical shooter set in a modern and urban environment realized on the source engine. We try to give the game a good mix between realism and gameplay, although HEAT is going to contain more realism than most modifications, which call themselves realistic.

The weapon handling is very important for a shooter, so we will stick to a proven concept, yet add our own touch with a realistic aiming system: Shooting from the hip is inaccurate, but one can use the iron sight or a scope for highly accurate shots. While sprinting, aiming is not possible at all. Crouching increases the accuracy, while moving decreases weapon control. The weapon damage is not as in real life, where one hit incapacitates you. But a player can't take many hits, until he dies.

The movement system gives the player many opportunities to use the surroundings to his advantage, e.g. lean around corners, open doors slowly or climbing on boxes, roofs and over fences, but he will also be limited by a stamina system and limited space for weapons.

The player must recognize enemy players or teammates based on their clothing, not their nametag.

We will include detailed hitboxes accompanied by bleeding of badly hurt parts of the body, which must be bandaged in order to restore their function.

Maps and Models will be the most realistic looking and sounding that we can achieve through today’s personal computers.

HEAT requires tactical movement and communication from a team in order to accomplish its goal, whether it is CTF, Reverse CTF or mission.

Brief status report

News 2 comments

As always, we would like to thank our community for its continued interest and support of the HEAT mod. The following is a brief update on some projects and progress that has been made since the last news update.
To begin, we welcome Complex, our new map props modeler and skinner, to the team! He has been hard at work which can be seen in his recent models .plan updates. These two screenshots show his gate switch model, complete with a moving knob and illuminating lights. This switch opens the main entrance to a base on the map bay:

Since the last news update we have invited the most active members of our forum and IRC channel to play the current build of the mod with us. While we have had some great fun and received a lot positive feedback, it is obvious that are still a lot of things left to do.
Currently, our highest priority will be attempting to get our Linux server running bug-free. Despite weeks of hard work from our coding team, this problem has yet to be resolved. In an attempt to rectify this issue, Quak has decided to merge our code with the newest HL2 SDK code and check for errors as often as possible. We hope that after this procedure is complete, we can return our focus to implementing new features once again.

To round off the media part of the news, these are two more screenshots of Vaarscha's newest map which takes place in the morning fog of a southamerican bay.

Is this game in any way related to the film HEAT?

Many firearms owners and ex-police officers tell me that film had some of the most realistic firefights in modern Hollywood cinema so it would be a funny coincidence if you chose the name for your realistic shooter mod without any knowledge of the film :P

I really love tactical and realistic shooters. If this mod is released (let's hope so) it will clearly be one of the best mods of HL2, maybe even better than some games. Keep up the good work!

The fact that science fiction is fiction shouldn't be a problem, either way, I think the real world gets a bit boring after a bit, thats my two cents anyhow plus a non peircing bullet would at least bruise the player, cousing some kind of damage, more than stamina, but not as much as say, a sniper rifle.

Concerning the crouching accuracy thing, guns actually dont have much of a spread, spreading is a cheap way of simulating recoil, notice how most games hailed as "realistic" the weapons don't have much spread, but much more recoil. If you do things right, the recoil should create a spread, while jostling your camera as well, if you want to emphasise the innacuracy of a weapon, THEN you give it a lerping spread, only at very long ranges are bullets affected by wind and whatnot, thanks to rifled barrels, guns don't have alot of actual spread.

sci-fi contains the word "fiction". Of course you can make fiction _feel_ real or unreal, yet it is not realistic until you know what the future is like...

In HEAT you will be able to take more than one bullet in certain bodyparts. In computer games, we often don't assume that the character of the player is dead but rather that he isn't able to fight anymore because of his wounds. If he can't walk or hold his gun anymore, then there's no point in letting the player "play" on.
And of course we've been putting some thoughts into armour as well: Some bullets are able to pierce body armour, some are not. However a non-piercing bullet does still apply a force onto a body, this is simulated by decreasing the stamina of the player.
