Just wandering if you can do this with an angle like on top of the ship and to the right

I'll try include a shot like that when i post another WIP. Not sure how much more of it'll get done in the next week, i really don't have the time to work on it, but just can't help my self getting distracted and coming back to it a bit cause i love the design.

I have to agree thanks
But I meant say you had a picture of the talos from an different angle could you still build the ship from that angle
Sorry about that I don't communicate very well

Ah. It depends really; i'm fairly comfortable modelling without concepts or just vague ones (seeing as that's how i started), i usually wing it when i model as it's the medium that i've been using longest really, so you'll see details on this that on the concept are barely more than blobs, but when i marked them down i was thinking of it as a 3D detail and simply recall that when i come to model it - Basically the concept just acts as a notebook that i jot cool little ideas down on and fully expand on them later when i model.

I do concepts first before i do anything now though because the results are simply better, doing it in 2D first allows me to experiment quicker and make sure the entire design wraps together well, and the outcome is generally higher quality and serves as buffer material to show you guys and helps Zero and Aliah when they're doing their jobs.

Though i guess that didn't really answer the question; if you go back in the gallery you'll see the Talos is quite an old concept, the second concept i actually did in the new line up. I could have modelled it from that fairly basic, none-linear perspective concept, but just chose to keep fleshing out the design because i thought it had far more potential than that concept portrayed. I used the Halcyon concept from that same line up of concepts to model the actual Halcyon and have modelled a couple of things before from simple thumbnail sketches - so, yeah, i could, it just depends on how i feel about the design.

Actually that was a help as I was considering trying my hand on one of the yss-1000 concepts and changing it a little

will the bridge be based like a cruiser; underslung on the front, or similar to a frigate or destroyer and have it based at the rear? i was wondering if you were tantalising us with step by step building haha

It'll be on the front, where exactly i'm not sure yet. I was at first going to go for above the MACs, but it might be lower down on the fairly plain bit just above the bump.

With the saber i'd feel more comfortable finding an orphographic sketch or doing some explorations of my own, rather than using the rendered and released concepts you're talking about. The key i think to my work flow is i'm the concept artist and the modeller, my concepts don't have to be quite so clear or accurate because i don't have to convey the ideas clearly to another person, and when i model i know already how big something is meant to be, what angle it's at, etc.

I'd suggest before you do it to study the concept and try doing some orphographic shots of it your self; just basic, blocky model details that you can use as a guide when you come to model it, it'll help you concentrate on the important details and keep proportions consistant.

@ SpartanG. Silly reply system.

So start of with a block version and work from there
Start of by figuring out how big they are in comparison to say the main body and then build it bigger so you can refine it slowly and keep Going from there

I like it, is that two MACs I see there? :)
I have one thing to add about those two heavy guns on top of the ship, maybe you could bring them out a little in order to give them a better angle and a wider firing arc, this would be good because were they are it looks as though you would have to fly the ship alongside the enemy and broadside them, which would limit the ship's usefulness. just a suggestion you may wish to consider :)

Yeah, two MACs. It's basically a miniature marathon where it counts, or a very, very large destroyer, depending on how you want to take it.

The placement for the turrets at the top will probably get tweaked, i'm not sure if i even like the idea of turrets there atm, but they help fill the space.

For a second I imagined the BSG Battlestar main battery sound effects for the dual MAC battery firing. Though it seems slightly more fitting for this than its original use in the show. Are the MAC batteries spinal, or simply bow-mounted? Because if they are spinal, then perhaps any and all railgun firing sound effects would be slow in magnetization of the rails (charge up sound, to be archaic) and the firing itself would be a sudden gain in sound speed to become something of a shriek. If they are bow-mounted, you can really go with any sort of speed, since the time to properly charge the magnetized alignment equipment will be far less with a much shorter barrel.

Simply a suggestion, nothing more.

what about the sound the MAC makes in reach, I've become pretty atached to it now :)

The games content usage rules don't cover sound effects, and making custom sounds is challenging. Cas is working on splicing together some stuff for us, though.

The MAC is a large coil gun that makes up the super structure of most UNSC ships. So it really has no sound except for the muzzle break.

Ah, so it's spinal. Very well. Just thought that it'd be cool to have some kind of audible or visible sign of the coil capacitors building up charge in the instants before firing.

Pssh, it's only 2k so far raw, and the rest of the ship is less detailed.

I see 2 MAC Guns, 2 light PD cannons, 2 of those giant triple-guns that the Marathon has... and is that a massive forward-facing turret like the Munificent and Resucant ships have in Star Wars?

No, it's a comms array meant to resemble a horn.

Description

Got distracted and worked on it some more.

The look i'm going for is slightly stripping away the normal armoured cowled aesthetic of the UNSC on the front of the ship, almost as if the ship is opening it's armoured jaws and bearing it's normally hidden teeth. Again, going with the highly aggressive character of the ship.
