i'm really surprised what cryengine1 can do :)
Cryengine 1 was one of the best engines in that year (probably my favorite). Unfortunately it was not so popular like the Source.
its because ubisoft have "stolen" the cryengine1 + farcry franchise. than crytek started over with cryengine2, then 3 which all are incompatible to each other with asset loading :D
and now you have to pay for cryengine(x) modding (!) and you have to pay for if you wanna have a normal soundsystem in your already payed cryengine mod licence. monthly... i think, its the best way to kill your engine and keep the comunity from using it. changine with every release the weapon asset handling, so that "old" riggs, and therefore your whole mod, is not anymore running ? --> check!
I think that was a very bad move from Crytek because now Unreal Engine 4 is out and its much more popular than new Cryengine. Cryengine 3 was popular (but the destruction, physics and overall movement was terrible) and many people like that engine.
i never have seen a UE4 screenshot with nice looking vegetation, it looks all time like plastic :D
I really like CryEngine, think it's sad that the newer FarCry games didn't use the newer versions of it.
Though no game has continued the story of FarCry 1 as far as I know.
Dunia(1) is a cryengine 1.8 port, farcry3 and 4 have clear further developed cryengines, and for me the engine seems the job doing well. but they guys at ubisoft still does not know how to create own good vegetation shaders, thats the main problem.
